Silverstone SX500-LG 500W Gold SFX-L

The PSU only uses two pins - voltage and ground. That's red/black for 2/3pin fans, or yellow/black for 4pin fans.

Ok, thanks, I'll give it a try then and post back here.
(before that I'll live some time with the stock fan to gather chirping statistics)

I've just swapped out the Globefan for a Silverstone SST-FW121. The old galloping sound has been replaced by a quieter chatter, and it seems to spin up fine under load.

Have you connected new fan directly to an internal fan control circuit of the PSU?

It's almost certainly built on the same Sirfa platform as all the other SFX-L units. Manual had no mention of semi-fanless functionality either.

Wait, so it's possibly the same just with a different fan profile? I really want to return my Silverstone unit. That clicking is so annoying. I definitely wouldn't mind if the fan just stayed on at a higher RPM... Has anyone done any testing under load with different fans? Is it a viable (though unfortunate) solution?

I'm probably ordering the Sharkoon one soon, it's a little cheaper than the Silverstone and doesn't have the semi-crappy feature.

I'd be really interested to see what the Sharkoon one is like. I would order one, but I am still waiting for the v3 PSU mounts to be come available again so I can fit an SFX-L PSU to my Ncase M1 v2. From what I have read the Sharkoon one doesn't have the fan start stop issue as it doesnt have this "feature".

I've ordered it, hopefully arriving before the end of the week. I'll quick-review it then and link it here to not hijack the topic.

Where did you order the shakoon PSU from? I've been looking for a merchant but all I've been able to locate so far are announcements about the PSU.

I live in Western Europe (Belgium) where it is readily available with the larger webshops.

Nice one Phuncz, I'd appreciate to hear if this is the redeemer for our PSU issues. Please post the review here, as this thread seems to contain everything we need to know for SFX-L + Ncase M1.

Thanks again.

No problem, I live to serve the community !

I'm just sad it has to be a relatively unknown brand (PSU-wise) that seems to have the best SFX PSU, or atleast on paper. I got tired of waiting only to end up chasing a possible v2.0 that solves the semi-crappy feature.

Agree. I cannot believe for one second that Silverstone thinks these units are acceptable volumes \ noise.

I have the 450watt SFX unit in my Ncase. The only way I can get it tolerable was to replace the standard fan with the NoiseBlocker, 180 the PSU so that the intake is on the inside of the case and stick a Fractal Design 80mm fan to the side to inject cool air into the PSU. I have the v2.0 PSU as well. I can only imagine how bad the v1.0 was.

Sorry if it's been discussed and I don't have one to look at myself but...

Has anyone considered modding the thermistor instead of the fan? An ideal solution might be to add a resistor in series or parallel to bump the curve in the right direction. For bonus points use an externally accessible pot for manual adjustment of the curve.

edit: Should have searched first lol. I see it's been mentioned a bit but not by anyone actually modding a unit as far as I can see.

Nice one Phuncz!

Looks promising so far (apart from the length of those SATA cables!). Still the noise is all I care about.

Please keep us updated.

Thanks again.

I really hope Silverstone is seeing the feedback about the fanless option. They don't need to change the fan manufacturer. Just get rid of the damn fanless feature and they will have a great PSU. They changed to all japanese caps so that gives me hope to seeing a better SFX-L revision.

Silverstone seems to have the best implementation of this SFX-L PSU compared to the other companies since they have the short/flat/black cables, all japanese caps, black modular connectors.

TBH I want to support Silverstone since they are the only company pushing the SFX power supply form factor in North America.

What about the Chietec SFX-500GD-C? It also doesn't have fanless feature, and supposed to have all japanese caps.

Y'all think this would work well with 5820K @4.3Ghz/1.3V and a reference 970 in an Ncase in terms of power?

Has silverstone acknowledged or commented on the noises and sounds coming from their SFX and SFX-L PSUs?

I have entirely given up on the existing units. The other two SFX-L PSUs are not and will likely not be available in Australia so silverstone units are the only ones I have access to.

For my scratch build case, I have switched to a 140mm strider 600W instead. The increased size and weight of a ATX PSU is worth better noise performance and not having weird irregular sounds emitted.

Since you are in Australia and Japan is a stone's throw away, wouldn't it be possible for you to acquire the Scythe version ?

Iirc, the current ones being sold don't have all Japanese caps. I could be wrong tho

Yes, it handles a 5930K (though not overclocked) and reference 980 just fine in my testing.

Thanks. Shouldn't be too far off then from my config in terms of power. Probably going to leave my OC at 4ghz and less voltage.

Just a quick update, the SX500-LG V1.1 are now fully shipping. These have 100% Japanese capacitors as many of you requested here. The price has increased by $5, but luckily many resellers haven't bothered changing their selling price (yet).

*Update 2015/5/14*
Sorry guys, looks like I was too quick to post about this info. Apparently, our US office still have V1.0 in stock, hence there are no price increases at many of the stores as they continue to sell them out. Some of you may still get lucky to have received V1.1 in the mix though.

Just ordered mine from amazon, hopefully the one I get is V1.1. Thanks for the update.

The only reason i'm not buying this unit or any of the SIlverstone SFX units is because of irregular fan noise behaviours reported in many places including this thread.

I was actually very close to buying one but they were out of stock (website stock count incorrect). The alternative for my case design is a 650W strider gold so I suppose silverstone gets my money in the end anyway.

Nice. I hope you let the reviewers know so they can add an addendum to their reviews.

I agree completely. I would have swapped out my 450W Silverstone SFX PSU by now if I thought for one second that the 500W SFX-L would be any better.

Thanks! Although some may beat me up by saying this, but I would encourage you to give SX500-LG a try. Noise perception is very subjective so you will not really know for sure until you try. You have to realize that the majority of happy users will not bother to report their experience and if you look at the comments posted on sites like Newegg and Amazon, there are many more satisfied users. I am not discrediting those who aren't satisfied with our SX500-LG here, but just want to give a different perspective. We will of course continue to improve and try to make our next SFX PSU better of course based on the feedbacks received here.

Yeah, we have made this clear to those reviewers who are receiving the SX500-LG V1.1.
