Hi guys,
Im new to AMD cpu's and I had a quick question about their iGPU line(7850k mainly). Say I use it with a GPU thats not compatible. does the igpu become regular cores that increases to whatever the igpu has? like going from 4 cores to 8?

With a dGPU only two options: 1. It isn't used at all. 2. You run it in CF if it is compatible with the dGPU.

There is the hypothetical 3rd that it gets used for FPU calc like what HSA is attempting, but at the current moment that is not yet possible.

Sorry for all the questions but what/who is HSA? is this some forth coming portion of 10 that would use the igpu as a regular cpu core?

It is something AMD is working toward where some of the iGPU resources can be used to assist with processing tasks to either reduce the burden on the CPU or to increase the overall performance of an APU or as durquavian mentioned, to handle some of the work that would normally be done by the dGPU to free up its resources for another task.

Thanks. I've not been up to snuff in my tech talk lately. I appreciate the link.

The cpu portion of the 7850k is no slouch it does not preform all that much lower than a fx 6300 hex core cpu. And the igpu is not a super weak one it can do most current gen games rather well.

Amd wants the igpu to be available to run as a sort of coprocessor. It won't crossfire with anything over a r7 250 with ddr3 but if you are sticking a r9 or a ti 750 or better in any of those cards out preform the dual gpu mode with the r7.
