DDR4 dimm size

I'm a bit confused as to dimm density moving from DDR3 to DDR4.
I'm supprised to see that most kits available contain 4GB dimms and few are 8GB. I was hoping that by the time the skylake comes out we would have 32GB 2x16GB kits out but that doesn't seem likely. Should DDR4 not have started with 8GB dimms? Is the reason artificial?

16 GB unbuffered DDR4 dimms will exist in the future.

I do not think so. That would mean 16GB minimum for dual channel and 32 GB minimum for quad channel.

The only current DDR4 platforms are quad channel so it makes sense that current kits typically contain four modules. It seems that right now the main choices are 4x4GB and 4x8GB. The former do seem to be more common than the latter but that's probablly just because 16GB is enough for most people right now.

Once we see mainstream DDR4 platforms I would expect to see more 2 module kits.

People seem to think memory errors don't really happen all that often, but I think there are studies which indicate they happen much much more often than might think.

Not really needed for a desktop assuming you test your ram before you install. And I mean testing for a weekend not a single pass of memtest86+.

And yet I have servers at work that have been in service for years 24/7/365 without a single ECC correction ever reported.

for most this likely won't be a problem, i've been running my sig rig (24gb of ecc) for a while myself and i've never seen reports of a single error (same as drescherjm to a point except i practically use a server as my main system XD ) and the previous owner hasn't reported of any either (ill add he was using ECC 16gb dimms, 12 of them for 192gb XD )
