Dell U3415W discussion - 21:9 UltraWide (3440x1440)

I wonder if I'll be protected from bad pixels and such if I go with Newegg. Would Dell not help in that situation? (EDIT: Looks like the "Premium Panel Guarantee" is listed in the specs on newegg, that's good)

I have spoken with two different CSR at Dell. The only way to get the "Premium Panel Guarantee" is to buy the panel directly from Dell. Even if you do not buy from dell you still get the 3-year Limited Hardware Warranty and 3-year Advanced Exchange Service.

Pretty shady for the Premium Panel Guarantee to be listed on all the Dell monitor listings I see on Newegg then. One of them isn't telling the truth. ;)

What kind of warranty will Dell honor if I purchase the U3415w from another retailer?
10:55:32 AM Agent
Yes, Customer the 3-years Premium Panel Guarantee would only be available from our end or our website
10:56:10 AM Customer
So would I have just the normal 3 year limited hardware warranty?
10:57:18 AM Agent
This monitor also comes with a 3-year Limited Hardware Warranty and 3-year Advanced Exchange Service.
10:58:02 AM Customer
Ok, So both of those warranties would still apply?
10:58:15 AM Agent
That would be correct Customer!

Thanks a bunch for clarifying!

Anybody else have their monitor just randomly turn off for a second every once in a while? Happened to me while play a racing game. Yeah, ruined my race.

Would this monitor run okay with a single Nvidia 680 or is a more powerful single card--or SLI--required? I haven't read through all 23 pages yet--this monitor doesn't have PWM, does it?

"okay" is really a relative term. I am using a gtx 770 right now while I await the fall out of the 390x release. I can run most games on med to high settings. A gtx 770 is only a tad bit faster than a gtx 680. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1037?vs=1348 So for me, this is okay for now.

Look at the benchmarks for a gtx 680 @ 1440p. A 3440x1440 monitor is about 34% more pixels than a 1440p monitor. So look at benchmarks and adjust accordingly.

Thanks for the reply, Doug. I'll read up some more. I'm just really antsy to upgrade from my 27" ASUS to a slightly larger size; 30" would have been perfect, size wise, but that doesn't seem to be a good option; 32" would prolly fit the bill better than a 34", but there seems to be a preponderance of PWM, which I'm very susceptible to. Might well have to wait until I upgrade video cards before hitting a 34". I can be very impulsive, so do appreciate the reality injection.

I don't think it is turning off. Mine has gone black for a second or two. It has only happened a couple times. Never happens during gaming or doing anything full screen.

Two questions for owners:

(1) Is the LG 4-screen split monitor software compatible with the Dell version of the display?

(2) Did LG fix the issue with the software that was allowing all other software to run in administrative mode (I.e., no UAC)?

Thanks!

EDIT: NM, the "both" seems to be referring to 3-year warranty and 3-year advance exchange.

The beginning of that quote seems to indicate that the premium panel guarantee would not apply.

But then later in the quote, he says that they would "both" still apply from a different retailer.

Are you guys using DP or HDMI?

Regardless, my Samsung 4K JU6700 did this during gaming as well. Turned out to be the cable. Go with the shortest high quality cable that you can. Usually 6' and under are recommended, but I found a Mediabridge 15' HDMI cable that worked just fine.

Been going back and forth between 27" qhd or 34wqhd. I'm looking for something that supports dual DP inputs. Looks like this one does, 1 mini, 1 standard. I also like the fact I can map the usb ports to the inputs. So I can eliminate my external usb switch.

Anyways deals on this monitor anywhere? It looks to be my new favorite, but cheapest I can find it is 1k. Not expecting it too much lower but i saw tiger direct had it for $900 just a little bit ago and it had edu pricing under 800. Anybody know of any current deals on it?

Could always try the 6' Monoprice DisplayPort cable. It's cheap and likely better quality than what they packed in with the monitor.

FWIW, I used the stock DP cable with both the 34UM94 and the U3415W and never had an issue. But the symptoms you describe definitely sound like a signaling issue and in my case (with the Samsung) it was fixed with a different cable.

Ahh the hell with it. I went ahead and picked it up from b&h for 1k. No tax, no shipping. Should have it next week.

They mention the premium panel guarantee on their listing as well. Hopefully I don't have to use it, but if I do and it's not applicable I'll let ya'll know.

I'm not a fan of blb, but I used a samsung monitor for years that had really bad clouding and all kinds of other non uniformities and it didn't bother me during normal use. I always have the lights on and I don't use it for movies. Primarily going to be a work horse for multiple apps open at once on my macbook. I need to throw together a gaming rig soon and hook that up to the second DP input. So big selling point for me was the built in usb switch and 2 DP jacks. I'll use the mini for the mac and the full size for my gaming rig.

My bleed/glow is pretty bad on the top left corner. However, you cannot notice it when there is color on the screen. I think you'll be fine and very satisfied with your purchase.

Looks like b&h lowered their price to 968.99 again. I fired up a customer service chat and got my price adjusted very easily.

Other than the ms store education discount, I think that is the lowest I could get. Tiger direct has taxes to texas so their $900 would have been more. So somewhat feeling I got a good deal. Now just waiting to see how well I did on the panel lottery. Should know that on mon/tues.

Received a Dell U3415W yesterday, 745 Euro, and can contribute with some comments:

DELL U3415W

This is my first Dell product, replacing a Philips and LG monitor setup. Have been considering a 21:9 since last summer, but main problem there were no models with a solid and functional stand. The reasons I selected the Dell was in priority, apart from the curve:

1. The stand, very solid, adjustment in height, tilt, horizontal - a 10kg monitor require a solid stand.
2. Its a Dell, high quality brand, 3 years of on site warranty, 3 years pixel warrenty.
3. Design, stance, quality.
4. Assumption I can get a similar also in 2-3 years, as Dell products have a long life cycle.
5. 2 x 9 watt speakers, hidden.
6. Second gen 21:9 from Dell ---> experienced monitor.
7. Many small things adding up; no power brick, Vesa mount, connectivity, connectors turning down, cover plate for the connector area, the genius design of the horizontal vent not prone to dust entering and adds to the sleek design.

I think the Dell is really a no brainer. The closest competitor is the Samsung S34E790, but the stand seems to miss horizontal adjustment, and cost 934 euro.

As to curve or not - Im glad I went for the curved, flat now looks outdated and the curve is really making sense at this width and viewing distance - will never buy a non 21:9 and non curved monitor again - there is no way back . why buy the past.
I think if you go for a non-curved, you will be reminded every day of the wrong choise, and eventually buy a curved one.

Apart from the above - the Dell is simply in another class when it comes to stance, quality, product refinement and appearance.

CONNECTING A 21:9 TO A LAPTOP

Apart from problem selecting which model, connecting is another problem. Before you run out and buy adapters, or a new computer - hook the monitor up and see.

I use a Lenovo G580, i3-3110M, 8GB RAM, HD 4000 graphics only, Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. Using a standard non-plated HDMI cable works just fine. You need to install the driver, and remember to REBOOT, with the monitor connected, and you will boot into 3440x1440.

I find the setting 2560x1080 is a better choice, as 3440x1440 gives tiny fonts and graphics - 2560x1080 gives a native and right picture on the Dell using the HD 4000 graphics.

( Also connected this Dell U3415W via same HDMI cable to a ThinkPad S440, i3-4010U, HD 4400 graphics only, downgraded to Windows 7 prof SP1. No need to install anything, worked right away in 3440x1440 and 2560x1080 )

GAMING

We tested various 21:9 trailers on YouTube of high end games, in HD. "Call of Duty" looked amazing. There is no visual difference in graphics details and visual experience between 3440x1440 and 2560x1080 setting on a game like Call of Duty. But frames are missing from time to time in the high resolution setting in a game demo on YouTube like GTA V PC "Cruising Around Town" 60fps - 2560x1080 is running this video as we see it about flawless. We have yet to download the demo games and test. Running in low res, frame rate can for sure be at least 50% higher.

Bottom line, no need to run in high resolution, and perhaps you just might not need to buy another computer or a USB 3.0 to DP adapter.

VERDICT

Wonder why I didnt get a Dell monitor before, and the years wasted with flimsy monitors.

I was actually a bit disappointed when setting up this 34" - I expected 4 cm higher and 9 cm wider - I even checked the box to make sure this was really a 34" model - when a 40" is available from Dell, I will definitely consider to upgrade. But am very happy with this new world of monitor over the old two monitor setup, solves important problems I had for many years as to productivity. Another I think important improvement, is the desk is much more clean and "good looking" - my wife is very pleased and did not complain about the 745 euro for a new monitor ;-)

Got mine today. Wow. Pictures don't do it justice. At all. It's so WIDE!

Done my share of googling, and nobody seems to have had this problem. . .

Any idea why I can't get 3440x1440 as a selectable resolution in Mechwarrior Online? Everyone says it should "just work". . . =(

JanAndersen

Where did you get it for 745€? I asked price in Belgium and it's 1100€! That's B2B price...

I got my 3415 today. It's pretty freaking awesome. I definitely prefer this setup to dual 27" monitors that I have at work. I already use divvy on my macbook to snap windows to portions of the screen so it works flawlessly as a dual/triple monitor for my work. Also I like the fact that my 2012 macbook pro just works with 3440x1440@60hz over dp. I was a little worried since it's technically over the advertised external resolution. But I plugged it in and switchresx immediately set it to the proper resolution.

I did notice the backlight bleed that people took pictures of. If I turn off the lights and leave a black screen on and move my head around I can see it. However it's very hard to see with any kinds of lights on even with a black screen. Then you throw anything on the monitor with some color and it's gone. Literally you would have to be in the dark watching letter box movies to notice it. Maybe that's what some people want this monitor for? As a work monitor and then with plans to use the second DP for a gaming rig once I get around to building one, it's perfect. It was quick to map the USB outputs to the different display inputs and the only other adjustment I made was lower the brightness from 75 to 65. Everything else I felt looked better calibrated than I could do w/o special equipment.

After 1 day, I have no regrets and I shudder at the thought of looking forward to playing with huge spreadsheets while working from home...

I believe so. That's the rev I got recently. I haven't heard of any rev4's and my manufacture date is from January.

Thanks monitor arrived today and its a REV01, its a very nice looking monitor and even the wife made a few positive comments

Anyone know how this built in kvm works how do you connect it up? Never mind the manual tells you how it work :)

Guys my monitor arrived today and I am running it off EVGA 970 for a couple of more days until my new build with dual Titan Z's in Sli arrives. For whatever reason I cannot find it at all under device manager no matter what I do, even after installing all the drivers. And it seems to only work off of HDMI and Display port is unresponsive (it will work the first 10 seconds or so while the motherboard is loading) and once windows 7 login screen comes up it's completely unresponsive... Any ideas? The latest drivers are downloaded for both monitor and graphics. Thanks for your help!

Can anyone help me...??? Come on guys, a bunch of you have this monitor. I'm sure I'm not the only one!

Have you tried a different cable? Bios boot has a lower resolution. Possibly it's a flakey cable.

I also believe there are people who have had issues with multi monitor setups with the u3415w over dp. If i'm not mistaken they had to go in and change DP to the default over HDMI under multimonitor setup in the nvidia control panel. Mine just works, so that's about all I have. Driving it with titan-x on DP and 650M on my macbook pro on minidp.

The weird part is I can get it to work with the DP cable just fine but once I reboot the system it will not work  ! Then I have to hook it up to HDMI and reboot the system again for it to work. Under device manager it doesn't show the monitor under "displays" or anything. It's almost like it's not detecting it at ALL. Weirdest thing I've ever encountered. I've downloaded the latest drivers for graphics cards( I've tried both Gtx 770 and 970) and it will not boot under display port after I restart the computer. It will show boot on the bios screen, etc but never let;s me go to windows login. Just goes into power save mode.

Wow. Newegg promo this weekend only: $850 w/ promo code EMCASKT35

Getting Dell to price match my 25-day old one has been an odyssey. Doesn't look like they'll do it.

I may actually just be returning mine. It's great and all. But I think I can live with my 24" U2412M at 1920x1200 just a year or so longer.

Saw the Newegg deal and I'm tempted.

Versus my current 3008WFP, I wonder if this would be a good idea? I would like to be able to pixel-edit my 3072x768 video footage without scaling it down.

The footage I'm editing is geared for NEC projectors from 2001 that probably aren't very wide-gamut, even though the SGI Electropaint screensaver run I did on it looked vibrant and spectacular.

Confession: I ran my 3008WFP in sRGB mode for the past four years. It's in Adobe RGB mode now.

I'm thinking about buying a couple of these for our workstations.
Will the Quadro FX3800 and Quadro 2000 be able to run these?

Has anyone had any problems with this display making noise like little explosions and ~10cm horizontal line with little dissorted image. First time it happened during gaming, just two times, after that everything was ok. But this time it was multiple times, not constant, like tens of seconds between it happening. After shutting comp down for a half hour or so, everything seems to be fine again.

It's hard to explain what really happens and I have no idea what to Google. It's rev A00, all other computer info is in signature.

Sounds like what was happening to people with the LG 34UM95 when DisplayPort 1.2 was enabled on the monitor. The fix was to disable DP 1.2; can you do that on the Dell? I don't have mine anymore, so I can't check.

hi guys,

Any idea if a wireless mouse will work using the built in kvm

for eg the logitech g602 with the wireless usb adptor

Newegg has this monitor for $899 + 10% off with promo code through the 13th.
