Silverstone SX500-LG 500W Gold SFX-L

If the box of the V1.1 doesn't have a sticker to cover up the words "semi-fanless" and "0dB", I doubt something useful has changed inside.

So what's the deal with the caps? I'm completely ignorant on the subject and am just curious what better caps offer. Better reliability?

On box is a semi-fanless logo, but no 0dB logo. There is a small sticker with v.1.1 on it. Tell me on what I have to made a special attention, to see if they have change something.

So I just couldnt take it anymore. I just replaced the stock fan with a Schyte 800rpm slim one.

It was indeed an improvement and altough I'm not totally happy with the results I think it's about as good it can get.

An improvement in terms of noise to replace a 1500rpm fan with a 800rpm fan? Of course.

I'm guessing you didn't make any before/after load/idle temperature measurements to verify the suitability of this fan?

Haha, intentional typo?

Yeah I echo WiSK's concern here - not only should the new fan's rpm/airflow characteristics be considered, but the temps inside the PSU enclosure should be monitored.

Hmm just like the ST45SF-G fan-mod that combined with a very high load and/or dust filter forced it to shut down.

Well the v1.1 was probably a small change then it sounds. Still would like to know not that my 500w has any noticeable noise and sits right next to me with pay fan facing away. Has it been confirmed that it's really the fan making the clicking/galloping noise and another fan put in wouldn't make any noise?

The primary reason I switched was because of the clicking sound emitted by the original fan. Considering the constant on/off switching the fan did I took the chance and replaced it with a constant low rpm one.

I will monitor the effects of this replacement and should anything strange occur I'll make sure to report it. I appreciate the feedback and will do some checking before making this a permanent solution.

Glad you answered positively, sorry if I sounded a bit snarky. Seen too many times people replacing PSU fans with no consideration of the fan being fit for purpose. Handgun style temperature probes can be found for reasonable price, and can give you good insight.

Personally, if I would try the Scythe slim fans, I would test both the 1200rpm version and the 1600rpm version :)

Hi.I bought one as a back up to my mini itx rig.
I have not experienced the noise you all mentioned. It was oriented fan facing up.

The only galloping sound I hear is when I play certain Iron Maiden songs:D

I'm using the 450gold now.I just finished an sg-05 mod but I think the sx500-LG will fit with a new diy psu tray.

Here's the 450 watter in my modded case.

my 450 is ver 2.0 tho-It's also silent.

Maybe the noises people have been complaining about are related to the psu position. Most of the ITX cases I have seen around here mount the PSU vertically. On the other hand, the comments made in this thread by people that don't have galloping noises, mention that have the PSU mounted in a traditional way (fan facing upwards or downwards).

V1.0 and I don't hear any noise when observing the fan turn on and off every few seconds. It's mounted vertically.

No offense taken.
I think you just got a nois(ier) psu.
Sorry for using the word "silent" loosely.

I am just referring to the annoying noise that were being described.
To me it's just another psu with a small fan. It's bearable with it's swooshing sound.

Now, my cpu cooler however, when pushed past 60% ---is noisy.

Well It's not as silent as the sx500LG but you know, it doesn't have that ticking , galloping ,chirping sounds other people were reporting.

Now that I really think about it-I should put the SX500 in my itx rig soon.I just need to install a DIYed bigger psu tray. The SX500 is way more quieter. This was the plan anyways.

And by the way-I did not use the provided cable set from SX500-They're a bit stiff. The pp-05 cables I used are more bendable.

Cryorig C1 cooler

Before -max temp while Heaven benchmark and Monster hunter online is 72 deg Celsius
[email protected] GTX970@1510/7272 ambient temp around15 using 450G SFX

Got bored --Delidded-repasted(Cryorig paste)-relidded the cpu-----61max temp
@4.4GHz GTX970 @1525.9/7272 ambient temp around 12 using SX-500LG

I'm not sure if the fan turns on or at which time during the benchmarks-there is a slim fan in front of the case.Overall sound is great! whisper wooosh.SX-500LG is mounted vertical, fan facing front of case.

I just got an email from Silverstone about the noise issue and the changes made in V1.1:

I really don't want to void my warranty on mine (a V1.0), but...I hate this noise. Very frustrating. I am considering the 450 or 600 now. I didn't pay ~$100 for this annoying sound. :/

Looks like "as designed" then. Maybe the people who don't hear any noise at all have higher case/ambient temperatures so the fan is just always on.

Nice, 1 of the 2 big issues people had has been addressed. Now we just need 1.2 with an "always on" switch :p

Also for any Canadians, this is finally in stock for a good price at DirectCanada ($109 with free shipping). Before today my only option was newegg where the total came to $173.

Yup. Noise is the 2nd priority for me after the caps.

I could do without the fanless idea as well but I'm guessing they think that extra feature equal extra sales. IMO most people that want the fanless feature for quietness are the same people complaining about the fanless feature.

Is it just me, but I'd rather use a deadly silent 140mm ATX PSU and have the mess of cables to deal with rather than put up with these pretty lame SFX PSU efforts and their dodgy fan performance.

Of course, but then again, an ATX PSU won't fit in everyone's cases. :p

Yeah i had to go ATX, and had to move out of my SG05 because of it. I could have gotten an ITX 970 and fit the bigger psu but the fans are louder on those, current 970 is 0db at idle but with the caps being upgraded I'm reconsidering getting this, voiding the warranty and slapping a thick fan on it... could keep a near silent rig but downsize back to SG05 size... hrmmm

I put a fan in front of the sx-500LG- that stops the fan from spinning, as it keeps the psu cool.So even at full load the fan may not be spinning inside the SX500.

When I put my hand on the psu exhaust while stress testing , I barely feel the air coming out .it's not warm, no significant blowing of air..My cool ambient temps at home help a lot too.

Only my 3 case fans(cpu fan included) can be heard. It's a lot quiter now that I put a different cpu fan--as opposed to using Cryorig's.

So I bought the PSU and it turned out that it indeed has a very distinct very audible chirping sound.
What a bad job from Silverstone.
And they consider it "normal"...
Nah, bullsht.

Do you know, maybe replacing the fan will work?
If yes, what fan can you advice me to buy?

I've just swapped out the Globefan for a Silverstone SST-FW121. The old galloping sound has been replaced by a quieter chatter, and it seems to spin up fine under load.

Why does nobody seem to remove the protective sticker from the Silverstone logo ?
Maybe that's what's causing the noises :p

What type of fan do I need?
From what I can gather, it must be a 120mm x 15mm fan.

Say, it could be SY1212SL12SL with 800 rpm and <20 db:
http://www.scythe-eu.com/en/products/fans/slip-stream-120-mm-slim.html

But your Silverstone fan has PWM (4 pin), and this Scythe has only 3 pins.
How much pins does it have to be?
