Grand Theft Auto V

Game runs great. Was annoyed the pre-load exploded my 240gb SSD and I had to wipe the other stuff.

I was annoyed to no end with Steam's packaging of the update last night. My GTA sat on an empty 120GB SSD which was completely eaten up to the point it couldn't finish the install. Had to initially put GTA on a larger SSD then move it. Just a PITA.

Would be nice if Steam had a warning, FYI the initial install will take 130+GB.

With regard to the game, it is amazing so far. Really pleased with the optimizations. The GTX780 performs really well at 1440p using NV's GE settings with a few changes like MSAA and others; however, I sense the need to upgrade! :)

Frames stay locked at 60 with a few dips to 30 (Vsync) while driving in dense areas or in the rain. But not really that noticeable when you are getting into the action.

130GB? wtf? How big is the actual game?

My SSD only had 110 GB free before the pre-load, but I did it in stages with the pre-load starting last week and only the unlock kicking in yesterday afternoon.

Word of caution: http://www.engadget.com/2015/04/14/gta-streams-get-your-game-stolen/

All I'm going to be thinking about today is playing this while I get other things done.

I really couldn't be more impressed. Having played the PS3 version quite a bit it really is like having gone from an alpha product to the final, "real" product and it's nothing short of revelatory.

I've been using KBM for everything with no regrets or desire to reach for the controller, either. Mouse is on raw input and, as expected, my shooting prowess is so much laughably better vs when I was on the PS3 it isn't even funny and this is even just staying in third person mode. First person mode is incredible. I'll be spending more time with that today.

Has anyone on a 60Hz monitor attempted to force adaptive v-sync for grins to see what it does? I've been playing with it off so far and have seen surprisingly little tearing.

I have seen the warnings about grass density settings when you leave the city and I suspect I will have to adjust for that. I'll go on a little drive today and find out for sure.

Sorry for being vague, but where or what is this referring to? Nvidia?

I'm on a 780 at 1920X1200 and I'll confess I have a *slight* itch to upgrade something but it's not killing me. ;)

Anybody have performance figures from 4k and dual 970 setup? I'm particularly looking for everything ultra with no AA. Let me know what you got, thanks!

Not my setup

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYpEX3s_0Zk&list=LLMlvpnw_8BblzpoVJf1PvsQ&index=1

He is running AA so not really what you are looking for. I did however start the download and should have some idea when I get home from work very late tonight or early morning before I go back to work. Rig in sig.

Decrypt appears to be running at around 25-30MB/s for me on my normal HDD. At this rate I predict around 30-40 minutes to decrypt.
Yeah, I overexaggerated :p. It really took me about 10 minutes with my 850 Pro decrypting the files at around 120 MB/s average, with peaks of 480 MB/s here and there.

I call BS on that unless the poster really means 970 SLI. But then again I am running the game with the draw distance maxed at the same framerate .

Is their any graphics settings that doesnt require a complete restart of the game holy shit!!
There shouldn't be. I was able to change everything without being told I needed to restart. This should not be an issue with the DirectX 11 API.

Is the game starting in windowed mode for anyone else? I have to start the game and then do an Alt-Enter. It's starting at 3840x2132 for some reason.
Mine started in fullscreen, but it switched to windowed when Windows was asking for network access. After changing it to fullscreen in the options it always starts that way for me.

SLI working for anyone?
Yes. GPU usage is around 70% on both of my 970s.

Thanks, I made sure that it was changed to Fullscreen in the options and it seems to have stuck. Launches at 3840x2160 now. Woot!

Also, no more crashes since I re-verified the game integrity. /crosses fingers

People were talking smack about Steam and the suckers who bought it there, but I have to say it's been a fairly seamless experience so far. I didn't have to deal with most of the BS I've seen on the last few pages, FWIW.
I have not experienced any issues that have been expressed, either. The Steam version has been flawless so far.

Yeah, I cannot get this game to stop stuttering... even with everything on lowest at 1080p I get stutters. Maybe something to do with 144hz and Gsync?
I'm running at 144 Hz with G-sync just fine. Make sure to check the refresh rate setting in the options menu. It was initially set to 23 Hz when I first started it.

...you really aren't reading all the BSOD reports out there. GTAV Launcher has a huge memory leak, the game won't recognize some mobile GPU, but will launch on Intel Integrated (at a major hit of performance), some people are getting the infinite download bug where the download is getting larger and larger, etc. Those are a few major bugs I've found trying to figure out why it won't launch on my notebook.
No BSOD problems with the Steam version, at least. The mobile issue could be related to Optimus laptops. There is a trick you can do to force games to prioritize the dGPU over the iGPU, but I'm not searching for it...

Apparently, if you start the prologue, quit without finishing it and then launch the benchmarking tool, you get all kinds of strange behavior.

At least on my end I do.
I noticed that, too. I started up the benchmark and it first started the campaign, then started the benchmark on top of it. Hilariously when the benchmark got to the jet scene it said I failed the mission because I left my group behind .

My knee-jerk reaction was going to be to play this "GTA style" with a 360 controller and probably mostly 3rd person. Any thoughts on this? Should I just go ahead and use KB+M and use first person instead?
First person is amazing and mouse aiming is tight if you can hold a consistent framerate. I'm a sim-racer, so I'm in love with first-person in cars. The interiors are highly detailed, and mouse free look makes the experience that much more immersive.

Soooo I got the game installed on my 256GB SSD, I had about 17 GB of free space after the initial pre-load. When I began the decrypt process there were notices saying disk drive write error on Steam and Im like da fuq? I looked at the SSD free space and it full!!! I had to remove Team Fortress 2, Pay Day 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Natural Selection 2 just to have enough free space to decrypt. Hell the drive nearly got full again even after removing all of the above. Finally the game was ready to play after about 30 minutes of this.

Never pre-loading again...

I do have a 500GB Samsung EVO on the way this Friday at least.

I only had 112GB left on my SSD and it downloaded and decrypted just fine. When anything needs to decrypt it's a safe assumption to make that you'll need the same amount of space for decrypting as the files themselves.

So I was able to copy the preload and the unpacking files to another HD and let it finish. Played all of 10 minutes in order to get my first save in. I will now copy this back to the 120GB SSD since it's back down to 65GB~. Thank God Steam lets you move installations about so easily.

Wife is out of town for 3 days. Beer and grilled meats will be consumed in bulk.

Yep, and 1080P/Very High on 85-90% of settings on a 970M is butter. I'm sure I could max it out at 1080P, or even go up a few resolution ticks, but it's just great looking.

Entirely different story on the Titan X however.

Even on my 750ti this game runs very well, no bells and whistles but I managed to basically max the card out without any noticeable fps drop @ 1080. Haven't checked the actual fps but game is running better than it did on PS4.

actually the first thing I did was launch the benchmarking tool, and it did some weird shit where it was jumping between the prologue and the benchmark the whole time. I didn't know what was going on because I haven't played before.

Yes, Nvidia's Geforce Experience (GE).

It will search your machine for compatible games then adjusts the settings to what GE thinks will be best mix of performance and visuals.

I generally avoid GE with games but was quite pleased with the settings it chose for GTA. I added MSAA but overall it did a good job.

generally speaking, geforce experience seems to nail it.. certainly gets it in the ballpark. then I bump settings a bit higher thanks to a 10-12% overclock which it doesn't account for obviously

On my setup the Geforce experience loves to set the resolution extra high and downscale it to 1080p...which IMO doesn't look as good as increased details and (especially) guaranteeing 60 FPS.

With this one it suggested shooting for 4K and lower details. After playing around with that, I prefer 1080p with everything cranked.

Damnit. I own this on my PS4. May consider getting it on PC instead.

The PS4 version is good but if you have a PC that outpaces it and I suspect that you do?

This will knock you on your ass. ;)

I came from the PS3 version and my god. so nice and smooth, not laggy at high settings.

Very well done R*

Anybody else having issues with keyboard controls? Seems like alot of the time I don't have control, almost as if the keys are sticky, but they're not. For instance, make a turn, take your finger off the key, and it keeps turning. At one point I lost control for a good 45sec to a minute.

Some of the controls come off as a bit convoluted to me. Like there is that one scene during the prolog were you're instructed to take cover. So, I went and crouched behind a box meanwhile all the other characters are still yelling at me to take cover. I'm like "???". Finally I realize that there is an actual key you have to press in order to "take cover" (Q by default). That simply was not intuitive at all, and the fact that I couldn't "take cover", by simply taking cover, was disappointing if not straight-up silly. Feels like they just mapped console controller buttons to random keyboard keys instead of actually trying to build a keyboard control system from the ground up. So, you end up having to memorize tons of random, non-intuitive keyboard mappings just to perform simple actions during the game. :(

To be fair, the game instructs you to press Q to take cover. It displays messages in the upper left corner of the screen with the key bindings for several actions. You just didn't see it.

And I don't see how GTA V's key bindings/controls are any more convoluted or non-intuitive than GTA IV's.

Oddly enough i was getting tears and stutter with vsync on, i turned it off because i use adaptive vsync then it was nice and smooth no tearing at all. As for the unpacking thing same thing happened to me it was chewing through my SSD so much i had to move a bunch of games to my spinner to finish the unpack.

Naw, man, you just missed the mission prompts. "Press a button to take cover" is a mechanic that's been around forever, and it does the job just fine. I take it you want to tap on your keyboard and press Q and E to aim around objects? Or WASD to properly align yourself behind a pillar all day?

That's not even the issue though. There was a point when the character was just running around on the beach, I wasn't even touching the keyboard. There have been several instances where I'd be driving and turn, takes my finger off the button, and the car would continue to turn, even if I tried to turn the other way. It feels almost like the key "locks".

There are points where it is unplayable because of the issue. I jumped in a car to escape the cops at one point, and the character started shooting randomly, dumped two clips and I never hit the fire button on the mouse. I had no control in the car, period. Ended up getting killed because of it. I can't even imagine what it would be like if I was online!

I do like to use WASD as my primary form of movement, but mainly, I was just disappointed that the game wasn't more intuitive. It seemed like a very advanced game when it came to stuff like making the hostages move by aiming my gun at them, and how fluid everything was going back and forth between cut-scenes and interactive game play. Yet all that and it can't even recognize ducking behind a large object as an attempt to take cover?

Meh whatever... I'll get used to the controls eventually, just wish some stuff could have been more intuitive.

I'll try it.

Ahh so tempted. My other friends don't have any capable hardware to play it though :(

So what's the consensus on kids playing it? Is it possible to explore the map without curses / hookers / crazy shit?

I let my kid run around BF4 without other players (drives the tank over things) & FC4 without any bad guys (dad slaughtered them all). Could GTA V be similar, I have a feeling it's inherently worse.

Aside from some people's problems in-game this game is amazing and I've put about 8hr into online. From a 90% completion for GTA5 on 360 this game was ment to be on PC.

I feel like GTA V is pretty decidedly an adult thing.

If you have a console, I think Red Dead Redemption is a much better idea for kids.

Agree. Had a blast playing this last night.

How old's your kid? In the intro mission after the prologue they're talking about big dicks the whole time, so unless you feel like he can handle that kind of banter I'd warn you off letting your kid play it.

The NPCs in GTA will utter random racial and profane epitaphs as you walk by, so I would say it's not a good idea to let your little ones near this game even for exploration purposes.

Yeah, I see what you mean. That segment's supposed to be a tutorial of sorts because the hiding behind stuff and shooting thing is basically a major aspect of the game, but with the prompts in the top left corner and all the stuff going on on the screen, it's not really well done that way.

I don't like the information being in the extreme corners, either. It took me about 10 minutes to figure out the ammo display was in the top-right corner instead of the bottom-right like it usually is...

Currently 296,862 users playing this on steam at the moment . Will probably keep going up at this rate (was lower last night).

GTA5 is rated M for a reason. It means kids can't walk into a store and buy this game without an adult. No way I would let my 8 and 10 year old nephews play this game, any more than I'd let them watch Django Unchained or Pulp Fiction.

Minecraft exists. Have him/her play that.
