I have visited a no. of brand name site on 10" laptop, none of them have RJ-45 on it. My portable is a Lenovo w/ Win xP. Now, I want a same size notebook that has a small SSD and RJ-45 on it. Can anyone recommend a brand name?

Unfortunately, RJ45 jacks are getting more and more rare these days. 10" notebooks are pretty rare as well- there are plenty of 10" 2-in-1's (none of which have RJ45 jacks), and plenty of notebooks in the 11.6" class.

Acer has a few that could fit the bill if you can deal with the 11.6" screen. Since you didn't really say what you needed, here's a cheap one, but they're available in myriad configurations- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314645

If it has an HDD, well.. you can always pull it out and replace it with a 2.5" SSD, it's not like it's much of a waste with the price of HDDs these days.

Best you can do nowadays is finding the right form factor that has a full size usb port and getting a usb ethernet controller.

There's the Surface 3 but I doubt that one's upgradable.
Dell has the Venue 11 line which you can upgrade the SSD in but not the memory. (you can in the pro at least, both the core i models and the core m ones)
There's plenty of other 10" 2 in 1's as mentioned above though.

We kinda need more info and an idea of how much you want to spend on it.

Just get a USB3 to Ethernet dongle, they work pretty well.

Also consider looking at some of the 13" ultrabooks. The Dell XPS13 is incredibly small for a 13" machine.

The amt. of $ spent doesn't really matter.

I use a 10" that fits vertically in my brief case. I only use this to test if there is internet connection at client's site. So w/o a RJ-45 port, I don't know what to do. Is SUB to Ethernet dongle workable or is there some sort of draw back on it?

even so, 11.6" is too big and heavy to carry it in a brief case. As the brief case is heavy enough

define: "Drawback" you plug it in, you plug in ethernet cable, done. (you might need an internet connection for drivers initially)

The Surface 3 might be the device for you if money isn't an issue but size is. The Surface 3 with the Type Cover is only two pounds but you'll need an USB to Ethernet adapter. It is 10.8" and not 10.1" but you can check the dimensions on the spec sheet or even try it out at a store, Microsoft Stores and I think Best Buys now have them on display.

Asus netbooks had a ethernet jack. Asus 11.6 models frequently do as well.

see my screen is 10", when you add the corner, it's 12". And that's the max. size of the brief case, to slide in vertical. I suppose I can slide in horizontal, but that's the last course of action

so when you people said 10.8", you are really talking about 1 + 1 + 10.8" = 12.8"

unexpected hiccups. Do you people have any brand name in mind? There are the ones w/ the wire, like this 1:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...sb_to_ethernet_adapter-_-33-114-120-_-Product

and there are ones w/o the wire, and that is usually a better idea so no wire can be damage

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...sb_to_ethernet_adapter-_-12-200-741-_-Product

if there is no hiccups, I think the Surface 3 will do, it's light enough

for those who own Surface 1, 2, how many year does your model last? Is it Li Ion battery?

http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/surface-2-specs

AS Mr. gates decides to hide the kind of battery they use

and any chance to downgrade to Win 7, and still get touch screen and all the drivers?

It's doable on the Surface Pro models. The Surface 3 will be a little trickier because Cherry Trail and prior Atom SoCs don't have official Windows 7 support. If touch is at all a major consideration, and for a device like a Surface 3 that's very likely, I don't think Windows 7 makes a lot of sense. The difference wouldn't be that big if one were to only use desktop apps but again, with something like a Surface 3 modern apps make a lot of sense when using touch.

While Windows 8 may not make a lot of sense to many with only keyboard and mouse operation, it's make a LOT more sense on a hybrid device.

Personally i'd suggest one with a wire as it'll put less stress on the usb port.
Do note that the surface 3 has usb 3.0 so you can get a gigabit adapter if you want.
Far as brands go i'm not sure if it matters a whole lot given that there's a really good chance they're going to be using similar realtek chips in there. Just look for one with good reviews i'd say.

I just got the Dell XPS 13 a few days ago. It's 12inches on the longest edge. Pretty darn tiny and light. The lack of bezel on the monitor is really much more impressive than i thought.

You need to also check the overall dimensions of the models you are looking at. The border around the screens has gotten a decent amount smaller in the last few years.

that's 11.6+1+1=13.6, that's bigger than the surface pro, although I just weighs my old sub notebook, it's 2.5 lb.

Taken directly from their site under the tech specs tab.

Dimensions & Weight7
Width: 11.85” / 301mm
Height: .90“ / 22.9mm
Depth: 8.35” / 212mm
Starting weight: 2.98lbs / 1.35kg

Why are you assuming that the display bezel always adds 2 inches to the width of the device?

If the width is 11.85" it can't possibly be 11.6" including bezel

Go go Pythagoreans' theorum:

sqrt(11.85*11.85 + 8.35*8.35) = 14.49"

Which is more than 1" bezels and much larger than the SP3

The Surface 3 is probably the best bet for around 10" since most 10" devices have a 16:9 aspect ration where the S3 is 3:2 like its big brother, so it's likely about as wide as any other 10" device but with a little added depth.

excellent pt. I forgot win 8 is design to make pc users get use to nokia phone, so microsoft can sell more nokia windows phone

I can just wait for win 10

it doesn't matter in that case.

My current sub notebook is 1.6" thick, because the battery is at an angle (stupid design by lenovo), but 1.2 KG. Or 2.5 lb (it feels heavier). I'm trying to cut weight and thickness on a new laptop. If the above 2.98 lb., that's actually heavier, so I'll pass

Can you open the Surface and upgrade to a bigger mSATA in the future?

And what kind of battery is it, does anyone knows? If not, how many times can you charge the battery? 500 times? 1000 times?

No surface is what you'd call remotely user servicable. They're some sort of lithium ion, while the original surface and surface 2's didn't have great battery life to start with I've not heard any rash of complaints about it getting significantly worse after 2 or 3 years so I guess whatever they are is sufficient

get the Surface 3, your stated needs are small, light, and can verify network connections. The Surface 3 is going to be the best build quality, smallest, and lightest machine that can do what you want it to do. Get a USB3 Gigabit adapter, you will be good to go.

I never have a chance to buy a new laptop, until now, my criteria remains unchanged:

10" screen
0.88 KG
Li Ion battery
Win 10
1" thin or less
very good quality

Have said the above, is Microsoft Surface (older models) the only ones out there?

it fits in my brief case vertically. I have been using a Lenovo notebook 10" for 19 year. It really works. So far, I can only find older Microsoft surface in that screen size. Is there other brand? I'm happy w/ microsoft, but I wonder if there are other brands that is good quality

Most of the Windows tablets that size are Atom based, which aren't necessarily bad but they can chug. Something with a Core M and real SSD drive will run much better but most of those are around 12". What's in your Lenovo?

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I meant hardware specs, CPU, RAM, etc. You mentioned PS so I think you'd be much happier with a Core M or better.

CS2 can run on Petium 3 or 4 as per their spec.

I'm using 4 GB of RAM, Intel Atom CPU, 100 GB hard drive.

You need to look at device dimensions not the screen dimensions.
The old 10" netbook I have is bigger than many larger screen devices today.

the exact diagonal measurement is 10". I did see Microsoft surface 3 is at 10.6", and if there is no other brand smaller than 10.6", I'll go w/ microsoft

if I needed Ethernet I would use the dock that came with the tablet.. as that DOES have a gigabit Ethernet port.

I had the exact same requirements recently and settled with an older aspire one d255. It's slow as fuck, but it has the needed size/features to do its job.

as for new, they do not exist. There's a british brand that makes a really good 10" one, but you'll need a usb>rj45 adapter.

that's a 3rd party generic brand name, I'll stick w/ major brand with legitimate R&D, such as HP, Dell, Lenovo (IBM) or Microsoft

=============================

Does anyone knows the approx. charge time of a MS Surface 3?

Forget the screen size and go by the chassis size. What is the diagonal size of your current machine?

My wife's surface 3 charges in under 3 hours from dead and last all day, 8+ hours.
