Don't they do that in schools out here (some of them)? They mock up an auto crash in front of a high school, with a student or students who "die" and then aren't in class the rest of the day. Complete with makeup, gore, etc. My GF actually was one of the "dead" back at her HS apparently.

Real trumps fake. Kind of like those sexual harassment and workplace violence videos they show at large corporations that everyone laughs at.
 
I guess I am one of the only ones who moves my phone up higher so i can look at the road and the phone at the same time.

I don't text and drive, but I will use voice to Text if I'm in the car.

This video featured some class act drivers though, I mean what do you expect to happen when you whip the steering wheel around. Wish it was a requirement for all folks with a drivers license to have to complete an Autocross course within a certain period of time to get their final check mark to get the license.

I remember being shown "Red Asphalt" in high school...was pretty damn real and horrifying.
 
I learned to drive off road with no speed limits long before I qualified for a driver's license.

You learn how to fix a slide and not overcorrect, or you spend the next few hours winching the jeep back on to the road and beating the fenders out enough to go on. :)

The only accidents I've had involved someone taking me out unexpectedly; if I'd seen them I wouldn't have been a target, I'd have moved quickly out of their way.

I saw people slam on brakes in front of a semi today, because our state has a law that you must move over (to the middle lane) if there's an emergency vehicle on the side of the road, or face a fine. (or maybe they were holding, but bad move either way :) )

The fact that the law says "move over if it is clear to do so, or decrease speed" apparently means you should stop dead when you see them. :confused:

As a parent with a 16yo trying to get his license to kill this is probably my number one concern. Its bad enough all the other reasons that they can be distracted and then all the stupid stuff teenagers do, add a screen distraction and now its so much worse.

I've thought about the OBD2 disable options that are available. But since i dont want to screw with emissions i'm looking at pre OBD2 vehicles. So that may cancel that out.

Now as much as i'd love to solely blame the gubment for failing to protect, i think the cellular providers should pony up some money to battle this problem or do something other than come up with some lame pledge. After are they are the ones that are trying to get a phone in everyones hands including the driving youth.

You're probably right. I'm sure there are some 16 year olds who are mature enough to handle it, but clearly a lot of them aren't. It's very hard to put a number on this sort of thing though, because as you said older people behave in irrational and reckless ways sometimes too.

Even at 18 years old (when you are considered an "adult" in most western nations) most people still have a lot of growing up to do (I know I certainly did). Based on the stuff that happens around most college campuses I don't think 18 year olds are terribly responsible either. :p

And more than half of you have done this shit at one point or another (especially at a red light).

I don't like ANYONE doing this shit, regardless of age. I don't care how safe of a driver you claim to be.
And the worse offenders? Fucking idiot 'adults' that don't have a damn idea how to turn on the SPEAKERPHONE that has been a standard feature of cell phones for over a decade.

Holding it to your head while talking? I hope you get fucking brain cancer; pieces of shit. >_>

News like this makes me wonder how the 70s generation used to drive (spoiler alert, they drove like shit). Bad drivers are bad drivers, regardless of age.

I will say one thing, my driver's ed teacher gave some advice that saved my fucking life (and my car) in one critical moment. I will never forget them and I swear I'm gonna throw them a parade if I ever got the money to do so.

It really depends a lot on the particular car and their particular implementation of TC. There is some great TC out there that still allows you a lot of control over the car while still helping you out avoiding you sliding. There is also TC that massively overcompensates for the loss of traction though, and is basically more of a liability than it is a "driver aid" as it was intended to be.

My car's TC is more towards that bottom description, and driving in snow/ice with it on is really difficult. The TC basically alternates between NO power at all and nearly full power, which is the exact opposite of what you want in slippery conditions. Turning TC off it's like a completely different car in those conditions. So much more responsive, predictable, etc

You are right that adults do it too, but you are wrong about them being "worse than teens". Numerous studies have shown younger drivers are far more likely to get in "distracted driving" accidents, and accidents in general. They don't have those high insurance premiums on young people for no reason.

Yup I saw that too, or something like it, I felt really queasy when the highway patrol guy was scooping pieces of skull into a black bag. That said, I don't think it really did anything to educate me or 'scare me straight".
 
I wish I could remember where this happened: A early 60 something year old woman in a mini van looked at her cell phone. She had the vehicle on cruise, coasted over to the left shoulder, struck and killed a 19 year old star runner all because she was looking at her cell phone briefly. (The runner was running against the traffic on the left shoulder where he should have been.)

Yes, texting and driving or focusing on your cell phone well driving is stupid. Hands free texting and talking through the cars blue tooth connection is there, use it. If your phone cannot handle that, get a real phone like a Windows Phone 8.1 phone.

I've never once placed or received a voice/text message because I don't own a cell phone. Never have. Never will. The company I work for demanded I carry one on four occasions. I insisted they shove the phone up their mother's ass on each occasion. I still work there.

I can't prove it, but I'd wager if we went all NSA on people who drive and use phones or text, we'd find that, by any reasonable standard, two-thirds of these communications are about complete bullshit. I'd have the cars these kids were pretending to drive crushed into five foot-square cubes and dropped on their front lawns. Maybe have "Jackass" tattooed on their foreheads, as well.

I was in a supermarket yesterday. There was a guy of about 25 or so. Could have been pro athlete, or someone in the military. In the prime of his life, but he needed to call someone and ask about what loaf of bread to buy. You see, he couldn't possibly make that decision on his own. I said to him, a total stranger, "Dude. Really?"

We sent men to the Moon and brought them back safely, but now we can't drive two miles or walk two blocks without calling somebody. God help us.

Quite true, but while cruising along, sipping Tang©, they really didn't need to worry about nailing a bridge abutment or a minivan full of kids. OK, maybe they might have crossed paths with the Star Ship Enterprise, but Chekov and Sulu always seem to be pretty attentive.

I understand your premise and it has good arguments in it; you come off very angry in this post, and what it also appears to be, angry for no reason at other people.

You have no idea what kind of crap that guy might be getting for not getting the right bread..I'm not saying I'm under that hard of a leash but when my wife asks for stuff, you can bet your ass that if I forgot to write it down or whatever, that she deserves the respect from me to actually get what she asks for and not just "close" to what she asks. So if I have to call her about bread then I have to call her about bread.

However, I agree that most of the communication is stuff that could just wait until you see them in person or are able to sit down comfortably and chat.

Yeah. My drivers ed instructor was a hard-ass Vietnam vet and chopper pilot. He was employed by the school district.

I learned to drive correctly. His ban hammer was unforgiving and final.
