HP Envy 32: 2560x1440 A-MVA

The lack of VESA compatibility is pretty disappointing considering it's TV like features.

The specs list it as a WVA+ panel, what in the world is that?

Im not sure who they are planning to market this to with those gigantor speakers flanking the display.

500 bucks is a great price for this type of panel at this size IMO, but i wonder how much cheaper they could have priced it without those things.

not one real review. shame. no pwm test either. awesome deal certainly so. probably the best monitor out to consider if it has no pwm

Maybe this one doesn't have problems with stripes?

Since three different monitors with the same panel have the banding/stripes issue, I would guess it's because of the panel itself and not the assembly.

this seems like a solid deal on amazon right now for $423? Any takers?

Now $417 on Amazon

Since the Acer $400 deal is probably never coming back this year on Newegg, can anyone compare the Envy to the Acer?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009643

BTW the envy is listed as anti-glare so that is not likely glossy unless they mean the frame

Most important part for me is the lack of PWM on lowest dimming like the Acer

I've been eying up a 32" 1440p monitor the last few days, but seeing a lot of the flickering issues with the BenQ and Samsung offerings turned me a way. I just happened to see this on Amazon and started looking for reviews, but I couldn't find crap other than what's at Amazon. I don't see many negatives, other than the aesthetics. I'm not overly picky about my monitors, and while I do have a 120hz BenQ right now that I love I'd be willing to give it up in exchange for a larger screen anyway. I generally use headphones, but if if the speakers on the monitor are acceptable I'd be OK with that just for the occasional time I'm lazy. For the price I'm giving this a shot. I figure Amazon is probably the least likely retailer I'd have an issue with returning this if I have to.

Does this thing also suffer from flickering/flashing issues like the Benq?
It does not look so by reading the reviews.

I'm also curious about this display. My local Best Buy actually has them in stock and has one set up as a demo on the show floor. Unfortunately it just has the demo loop and I couldn't get them to let me use Windows on it to judge input lag.

I did lower the brightness to 0% and didn't see any sign of flickering through my cell phone camera, though I know that isn't any sort of conclusive test. The possibility of it having PWM is my biggest turnoff right now. If it doesn't, I wish HP would confirm it on their website - it seems that advertising displays as being "flicker-free" is a big marketing push these days.

It's likely PWM free.

Best Buy has a good return policy, so you could realistically purchase it, test it for PWM using http://www.testufo.com/#test=blurtrail and return it all within an hour.

Either that, or consider IPS alternatives around the same price like the LG 27MB85R-B, which I personally find far superior to the current batch of VA panels (I own a BL3200PT). Thread for it here

Mine is due for delivery on Saturday. I'm by no means an expert with this sort of stuff, but if someone wants me to try some testing on it just point me in the right direction and I'll let you know what I find out.

some reviews from people who own it :

Pros: Excellent monitor. Worked right out of the box. I used the given HDMI cord and hooked it into my r9 290, Windows recognized the 1440p and set it as native. Tinkered with the brightness and contrast to my liking. Text is clear and the colors pop. The monitor itself is very pleasing to look at, just make sure you have a large desk. I do not use the speakers and probably never will.

Cons: I am having the same issues as a previous reviewer. Games with the arma engine like dayz standalone & arma 3, I get random vertical lines and flashes. It seems to happen every 5 or 6 minutes. Other games have zero issues. Never happened on my old monitor and didn't start till the second I plugged in the new one. I am guessing it has something to due with 1440p. Would love some assistance on this. Anyone else having this issue???

Cons: My removing an egg comes from a graphics problem I am getting playing dayz epoch. I am getting very odd random light flashes and random pixel distortion. Not really sure how to explain it. My other monitor does not have this issue, I know its not my video card, it does not effect any of my other games. I have tried different color modes and many settings changes in game and nothing has fixed it. I hope someone can confirm this or let me know if they find a fix.

Yes the 7ms response time is horrible I do not recommend this monitor for gaming.

Well I bought one today and I feel pretty confident saying that it does use PWM :( It also has a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen.

Using the test that Nikyo linked I can only see a solid line at 100% brightness - anything below that and I see multiple lines when I track it with my eyes. If I set it to 0% brightness at home in a dark room I can see the "scan lines" through my cell phone camera as well.

I will say that I love the size and screen real-estate. Text is much more legible than on a 27" display at the same resolution.

My post was from months ago when there was absolutely no information about VESA mounting.

Thanks for doing the test. That's incredibly unfortunate to hear, though. :(

So why did you say it lacked VESA mount compatibility if you had no info at the time?

Well, this sucks. The monitor itself is pretty good for me, but it suffers from the same flickering issues that the BenQ BL3200PT and Samsung S32D850T have been reporting lately. First tested a quick game of MechWarrior Online, and it seemed fine. Fired up Arma 3 and I got some odd flickering, which was really noticeable in the infantry showcase (although I couldn't reproduce it during a quick helicopter flight around Altis in the editor). Fired up Google maps and a bit of flickering in some regions. Minor flickering happened in Crysis 3 as well. I couldn't get it to flicker in Skyrim at all, nor STALKER SoC with Complete 2009.

Guess I'll be sending this back to Amazon and I'll be going back to my BenQ 2420T :(

I'm fishing for good news on this monitor. I REALLY like the size, resolution, and it is a the price point I wanted to pay, but I'm concerned about the flickering problems. I don't play any of the games that were mentioned as having known problems; only Titanfall and WoW.

If not this monitor, I'm thinking about one of the 29-inch ultra widescreens as an upgrade to my old Dell Ultrasharp 2405.

Anyone have other recommendations for an affordable, wide-format, monitor?

Well... I had some Amazon GCs so I took a chance on the HP Envy 32" and it arrived last night.

I'm not an expert by any means, so take my comments with a grain of salt.

The monitor seems pretty darn good. It is big, I mean huge, especially with the speakers on the sides, and I had to rearrange my desk to make it fit, but I sure love the added real estate. It was very well packed, and probably would have survived a fall from the back of a truck The stand attached easily, with no tools, and it included a VESA bracket that connects in place of the stand, and an HDMI and Displayport cable. Con #1: I really wish the stand had a height adjustment. It sits noticably lower than my Dell. Nothing that can't be fixed with a couple of volumes from the encyclopedia (what purpose does a 20 year old encyclopedia have these days anyway) ;-)

I only play a handfull of games (Titanfall, WoW, and Starcraft 2), and couldn't detect any input lag or ghosting, but considering the old monitor I was coming from (Dell Ultrasharp 2405) I'm probably not the best judge of performance. The Dell supposedly had a 14ms response, and the HP has 7ms, so it couldn't have been worse than what I had, right? I will say the colors really 'pop' on the screen. My wife and I got into a raid and was really impressed by all the new eyecandy. Kept looking at my wife's monitor next to me to see if she was seeing the same thing I was, and she was not; she has a 28" BenQ with 3ms response and the same video card I have (Powercolor HD 7870 Myst Ed). The HP really looked nice. I found a 'game' setting in the OSD, so maybe that had something to do with it.

I haven't tried the Beats speakers yet since I game with headphones, and have external Logitechs for watching movies. But, now that I think about it, if they sound okay, I can relocate the good Logitechs to my downstairs computer...

I read a lot of folks dinged the remote, but I like it. It isn't fancy, but I've always been frustrated with OSD buttons on past monitors, and the remote is perfect for tooling around the OSD.

I might invest in an adjustable monitor stand in the future, but from where I'm sitting, it seems like a good monitor for the money.

Let me know if there are any specific test you want me to do. I'll try to accomodate.

Cheers,
Glendor...

@Glendor could you confirm that the monitor uses pwm? the only reference about it that i find is the other post in this thread, it would be nice to have a second opinnion. Thanks!

I performed the first test, and with the brightness at 100%, I could detect 3 lines, and when I turned the brightness down to about 50% I could see what looked like 6 vertical lines.

I've read as much as possible about this monitor and the PMW problem, and I'm pretty sure this monitor uses PMW, but I'm happily not affected by the problems. I don't play any of the problematic games, and my 40+ year old, non-professional gamer, eyes don't seem to see all the problems or artifacts that others are complaining about.

I hope this helps with your decision.

thanks for the quick answer! i ended up going for the acer 272hul, mainly because of the weight of the 32 inch models, it is supposed to be a pwm free model, sincelery i currently have a pwm lg monitor, but i never noticed any problems, but i also never had a flicker free monitor to compare so...
If you don't care about pwm this hp 32 envy is very tempting at its current price, too bad that i need to pay for the shipping weight.

What games seem to make the flicker happen most. I ordered the ACER variant of this monitor and am really interested to see if the flickering will bother me.

I mostly play GW2. If not that usually a RTS.

I just received my monitor over the weekend and came in a HUGE box. I checked for dead pixels, none. Checked it for any bleeding, none to very minimal. I've paired it up with my GTX680 and haven't had any issues. I've only tested this with WoW and I must say that this thing is gorgeous. Ill try it out with Starcraft tonight to see if there are any issues. I haven't had in flickering issues.

for paying only 348 via Beach Camera, it was way worth it.

Im still very happy with mine, but i will be adding an adjustable stand in the near future.

Do you guys notice any uneven colors?

I received the Acer variant and the colors are not uniform across the panel. I'm sending it back and debating whether or not I should pickup the HP 32. The size and resolution were perfect on the Acer.

May I ask how you got it for $348? Thats a great price.

Also what is all this talk about PWM? What exactly is it and why is it a problem? Please excuse my ignorance.

Also I would like it if HP would offer this monitor without those speakers on the side (it would be cheaper as well).

I guess there is a 32" acer with WQHD resolution. Anything else this size with WQHD resolution?

Thanks,

PWM info

Also, as far as you guys concerned about the flickering that occurred with some of these monitors and going with a different monitor because of it, keep in mind that BenQ (no clue about Acer or Samsung) has not only acknowledged the issue but will issue an RMA for your BL3200PT and fix the flashing. Not only that, newer units seem to already have the fix applied and appear to be free from the issue. It really is a great monitor if you get one without that issue (or get your existing one fixed or replaced).

So from reading a bunch of reviews online for this HP Envy monitor it sounds like it'll run at full resolution over HDMI. My question is my desktop (an acer) has HDMI but it's part of the integrated graphics (Intel HD 2500 I believe). Does anyone know if this HP Envy will run at full resolution with my current set-up?

Thanks,

Its really cool having your review quoted on a hardware forum! I still have this HP Envy monitor. I have built a whole new computer and arma3 and 2 are both still getting this white flicker. The only thing that calms the flicker is turning the contrast from 90 to 40. then it looks like crap. I'm sorry to dig up an old thread, Im just still looking to fix it.

The white flicker was an issue with almost all early 32'' AMVA+ monitors, no matter the brand.
Theý should have fixed this via firmware updates months ago, at least BenQ, Samsung etc.
You gotta ask HP service if they are aware of the issue and updated the Envy 32 series, then RMA your monitor and get it updated or replaced.

Apparently HP support sucks. I contacted their support and they never responded. They have not released windows 10 support yet, not that I think that that would matter. The HP support assistant never fixed my issue in windows 7, so I don't expect they will try to correct it in windows 10. I tried bumping my thread but my bump was removed and i was scolded through PM for trying to bump.

Here is my thread. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Deskto...are-support/m-p/5279846/highlight/true#M52077

Bump!

Along with the updated Envy 32, a new speaker-less Pavilion 32 was announced today. According to AMD Freesync site it should have a range of 48-75Hz with LFC. Anyone have seen any reviews of the updated Envy 32 with freesync or had a chance to check it themselves?
