Dell U3415W discussion - 21:9 UltraWide (3440x1440)

I've attached the two calibration reports from the different revisions. I don't really know what this means if anything exactly, but I can confidently say with the exact same settings I am noticing much better picture than my A00 model. My wife, who doesn't care for this kind of thing, did say that the monitor looks awesome.

Anyone getting unknown TUSB3410 boot device in device manager? I have posted this on the Dell forums but haven't gotten definitive answers yet. Now that revision A01 monitors are out wondering of anyone is getting this error.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check mine, but I think it's a RevA00. I think I'll try and get it replaced since the BLB is quite noticeable.

Yea I am now thinking about this as well. My bleed isn't too bad just a tiny bit in the upper left corner. But if the picture quality is better than I definetly want to get a replacement. I would like to see side by side photos of the A00 and A01.

I tried the screen at my workplace (A01) using HDMI 2.0 port with HDMI cable that came with the screen connected to an Asus GTX 970 and did not see any Unknown device in device manager. (I did not plug the USB hub on my pc). I am running windows 8.1 64 bit.

I installed the Dell screen driver and it only changed the monitor from PNP monitor to Dell U3415W in device manager.

Try plugging in the USB upstream cable and see what you get. I am on Win 8.1 64 bit also.

Will have to wait once I get back home. Screen is all packed up in the box.

If you unplug youre USB upstream cable, does the unknown device in device manager go away?

Yes the unknown device does disappear.

Its a texas instruments serial to usb adapter. Dell dropped the ball, it wasn't ment to be user accessible and was used internally for firmware updates but somehow was left enabled. It doesn't affect functionality and you can get drivers for it from TI's website if it bothers you.

Have that Texas instrument device appear also when plugging in the USB hub. Hubs works great so I just disabled this device.

I am not worried about it I was just trying to narrow things down and see if it was just my rig. I have it disabled also.

We, the riffraff mob, demand pictures of the A01 screen! (and Backlight Bleeding!) :D

While I am enjoying better picture quality with this rev, I am still not pleased with what back light does exist, top left corner, and the IPS glow.

I am debating trying out the Samsung after my Amazon return is complete. If I am going to spend this much on a monitor I want to make sure as good as it can get.

Will take photos later.

do you have the two revisions side by side, and notice an obvious difference in quality between the two? or is this just some sort of placebo effect? genuinely curious, if they've made progress with A01, i'd probably risk an exchange.. even though i'm thrilled with mine still.

+1 for comparison pics, please :D

Pics incoming. I had to send the other one back. On UPS truck as we speak.

Rev 01 - Factory Calibration / Standard Preset / DisplayPort

Below are some caps from various movies. You can see the bleed in the corner and some of the glow.

More to come - And I will be making adjustments to monitor settings.

The overall picture quality is amazing... just the damn back light bleed and IPS glow. Just disappointing.

Edit: To be clear. The out of the box quality in both bleed, glow is better on A01. Quality, may be subjective to me on A01.

Thank you very much Mcklain and Remnex :)

@Picture
What brightness setting did you use? Is the display connected to a system? I can see you chose longer exposure in your camera (compare status LED picture 1<->2). Would you be so kind as to take on of a black picture in windows on the same settings as you used on pciture1?

Cheers!

Latest actual EU delivery estimate I can get (other than the vague '1-3 moths') is for 17/03/2015, which is pushed back from the previous date I was given of 18/02/2015. Who knows when the things will actually ship.

I have been following this thread for awhile and decided to join the forum so I could provide my impressions. Through an eerily similar chain of events to a prior poster, I have had both the A00 and A01 monitors to compare. I originally ordered directly from Dell in late January, but was given a delivery date of March 5th in the US. A week later Amazon.com got them in stock, and I couldn't wait. I ordered another, keeping the Dell order as a backup in case something fell through. The day the Amazon order arrived, I literally set the monitor up, checked my email only to find that the Dell order had shipped nearly 3 weeks early. I called Dell to try and cancel the order mid-shipment and was offered $100 back if I kept the Dell order and sent Amazon back. Well that was a no brainer.

This allowed me to have the first monitor (rev A00) for several days before the second arrived (rev A01). I never had both monitors together as I shipped the first back the morning I received the second, but I had stared at the A00 for hours and hours before shipping it back to Amazon as a defective product. Yes, defective. For a $1000 monitor it had intolerable light bleed, and on several occasions the screen would inexplicably flicker off and then on. I had it next to my old Dell U2412M, a 3 y/o IPS monitor, and the U3415W looked somewhat washed out in colors and blacks were very grey, like very poor contrast. Unfortunately, since I knew from the first few hours this monitor was definitely going back, I never tried to calibrate it, but I gave it a good workout trying various menu settings, playing with the Dell Desktop Manager program, doing desktop program work, gaming, and watching movies (Blu-ray and streaming). The form factor was undeniably fantastic, but the display itself was not satisfactory. I was glad when it left and fully expected to send the next monitor back as well.

I was inclined to not even unpack the second and just ship it back, but the Dell representative assured me that because I had ordered it through Dell's Member Purchase program, I had 30 days to evaluate it and could send it back for any reason, free shipping and no restocking fees. What the hell, I decided to give it one more shot. Plus it was the A01. Maybe something had changed.

As soon as the first windows desktop came up, it was noticeably better. Colors were more vibrant and blacks were deeper. The monitor's menu default settings were exactly the same as the first. I'm not sure if my first monitor had something inherently wrong with the display since it definitely had other hardware issues with screen flickering, but the new monitor was definitely improved and more what I would expect out of an IPS monitor.

Lightbleed
Don't fool yourself, it is still there but my particular A01 is definitely better. I hate when people post lightbleed pictures that are grossly overexposed by their phone cameras. I took the shots below with a DSLR and I exposed them to represent the light bleed that I can see with my human eye. I'm standing well back from the monitor to reduce any off axis IPS glow. The screen was the only light source in an otherwise pitch black room. I have fully calibrated the monitor using an X-rite i1Display 2, which is not a high end professional calibration device, but it does a very good job and I have never had issues with it as an amateur enthusiast photographer. The screen is calibrated to 6500K, gamma 2.2, and 120cd/m2.

Lightbleed is most noticable in the left upper corner, but there is some in left lower as well as right upper. The right lower has none that I can appreciate. Now look at the next picture which is taken from a natural seating position in front of the monitor looking up to the left upper corner.

euT8817.jpg

That's 80% IPS glow and then lightbleed. Next is the same corner just shifting my field of view to be directly in front of that corner.

7Nrk2vA.jpg

That's the lightbleed. Because of the very wide aspect of this monitor, IPS glow becomes a major deal (and maybe deal breaker for those who want perfect black screens for movie/gaming playback). The lightbleed is fairly minimal in comparison. Here is just my desktop with a fairly dark wallpaper (Saturn as taken by the Cassini probe). Same exposure (manual exposure mode) on my camera and standing 6-7 feet away to remove any IPS glow. Camera CCD sensors are nowhere near as good as the human eye in reproducing high contrast scenes which is why the desktop icons and wallpaper look overexposed and blown out. The image is exposed to show the black screen details.

udoFxTy.jpg

The lightbleed is there, but it's minimally distracting. When I sit directly in front of the monitor, the IPS glow from all four corners is much more distracting. This is only when in a dark room viewing dark content. I notice almost nothing during the day. When an application or anything other than a dark scene in a movie is open full screen, the display is stunning. Last, here is a picture with a single photo I took of comet Lovejoy. It has a very dark star field and only takes up the center 2/3 of the screen. When standing back where the picture is taken, it looks pretty darn good. When sitting at typical monitor viewing distances, there is very noticeable IPS glow from all 4 corners that reaches all the way to the edges of the photo. Unfortunately, I don't have a wide enough angled lens to take that kind of shot.

So now I'm personally very torn about what to do with this monitor. I will be using it for everything: my main entertainment screen (movies, gaming), but also for photo editing work and all other general desktop work. For desktop work, it is stunning. I would highly recommend it. If you are doing photo editing work and happen to be working on dark images, the center of the screen is where you need to be evaluating the shot. Now in reality, that is where all of that type of work is usually done, with menu bars open to the sides where any lightbleed/IPS glow really does not impact. Color accuracy calibrates very well, and better than my old U2412M IPS monitor. The display on this A01 revision is exactly what you would expect out of a high quality IPS display for color rendering and contrast (sRGB of course). For movies and entertainment, the corners may irritate, but only in dark scenes. I started watching the movie "Gravity" last night, full screen where this form factor can really shine. With all those deep space dark scenes, it became very difficult not to be frustrated with the corners of this display. And that was even sitting back a couple more feet for movie watching. Watching "Edge of Tomorrow", it is a totally satisfying, absolutely absorbing display. I can't think about going back to tinny letterbox viewing. But it is the IPS glow much more than any lightbleed that causes the issue. That will be inherent to any IPS monitor 34 inches wide. The one other monitor that I have really been following is the Phillips BDM4065UC. At 40" 4k resolution, even if used in 21:9 format it is 3.5 inches wider than the Dell. It seems to have it's own set of issues though. No perfect monitor exists. I think I'm 90% sure I will be keeping this one, but I have a couple more weeks to decide...

Oh, and here is my calibration I was able to quickly achieve. I probably can fine tune it even more when I get some time, but it's already pretty impressive.

Nice writeup. Just wondering if you could let us know what your monitor settings are to achieve your calibration?

Thanks

For those in the UK, OCUK have the U3415W for £650+del (cheapest you can get it for without importing). Price is likely to go back up either by the end of today or sometime tomorrow.

What's the warranty situation if one were to import this to the US? Is it a full international warranty or is it better to buy from Dell US?

I contacted Dell CSR when I was looking to order one from Germany (to UK) and was told that I would need to fill out a 'tag transfer' form to move ownership between regions (to avoid shipping between countries for warranty support). It might be best to contact Dell to confirm, but it's likely the same case from UK to US.

The OCUK batch have also been confirmed as revision A01.

::EDIT:: Well, it's back up to £800 now.

Damn just received my bill from my Canadian distributor for my screen. Payed 914$ canadian total for this screen!!

Thats 730$ US or £474 GBP

Seems dell forgot to up there Canadian prices since our dollar went down 20% in the last couple of months!

hm, so i just signed up for the sling tv trial a few days ago. kept getting authorization issues with the program on my pc, dismissed it as an issue of theirs. just came back to it tonight, still having issues. so i just checked HDCP status, and i'm getting the following:

this is new to my U3415W. anyone else seeing this via mDP? don't have a regular display port cable on hand to try. audio related, perhaps? going to play around with it.

I haven't had this but try and turn off Displayport 1.2 and see if it helps. Just a thought. Let us know.

Heads up, it's on the microsoft store for $930 plus tax with free shipping right now. If you have an educational email you can get an extra 10% and then 5% when you text MSHS to 29502.

Total comes to $795 plus tax.

I just wished any of these would ship to Europe.
UK stock arrived pretty much everywhere this Wednesday/Thursday. If you don't want to wait for the rest of the EU to receive stock, you could import from there.

Don't have enough posts to drop in hotdeals section, but ordered this last night for the flat $930 on MS store when I saw it posted in their store, not knowing the education discount was available. I already had an order in for Dell at ~1130, so after calling to cancel with Dell and rejecting their initial $100 credit, they matched the full $200 difference and upgraded to overnight shipping. YMMV, and obviously didn't try it with the full education discount on top, but I was willing to pay a bit more for the full Dell warranty anyway. Delivery date still shows early April from Dell as I assume they are working with A01 stock now

i have this monitor for a month now.

i am still impressed every single day.
i got used to the BLB so does not bother me at al.

i dont see why people buy the LG version
The Dell is basicly the same and even better cause of ergonomics plus Dells warranty is just outstanding.

If it wasnt for the price difference i would have went for the Samsung though. Bin using VA for along time and i still stand by that its the best between TN and IPS.

Hopefully the stock from MS will be A01

Couldn't resist that deal. Crazy thing is that I have an unopened 34um95 sitting in my living room that came in today. Guess that's going back.

I'm with you - I'd love to try the Samsung because VA panels are awesome, but I couldn't justify the $400+ price difference after the Dell went on sale earlier today.

At least you can send yours back. :) I have been using my 34UM94 daily for several months now and I'm not sure what to do with it now. I lucked up and got one with very little BLB and great panel uniformity...it really is a beautiful monitor but I just can't see needing two ultrawide 34's, particularly when I plan on getting the Philips BDM4065UC when it gets released here in the US.
