AMD Releases more Carrizo Details: AMD's ISSCC 2015 Presentation

I hope I can get my hands on this. HSA has all my fizzy bits fizzing.

So its official, AMD has given up on the desktop.

The same was said for Intel.

Mobile optimization is good for desktops, things like efficiency, low TDP, smaller process sizes, etc all directly affect desktop CPU's too. The stuff they learn from this will eventually be applied to server cores and finally desktop cores.

AMD is claiming that Carrizo packs about 3.1 billion transistors, 29% more than Kaveri, into the same die area as Kaveri. The Excavator cores themselves are 23% smaller than Steamroller but have a 5% higher IPC and consume 40% less power. Overall system energy use is down 20% or so and everything is updated. If you have read this far, you probably realize that we had no place to work in the fact that Carrizo has H.265 support and a claimed 3.5 increase in transcode performance, a handy number in light of the 4K vs 1080p increase, eh?

This is the last chip in the line of the Bulldozer family and it seems that the only way they could have moved forward was this solution rather then a FM2+ part.

The difference might be huge lets hope they can produce a lot of nice products with Carrizo ;) .

So anyone actually checked the state of AMD laptops in the retail channel recently?

Judging by the posts so far...not many.

I wouldnt get your hopes up. You'll not see a decent laptop with one of these installed for sale anywhere.

At best you'll find a HP model with one installed and 1366x768 TN screen, 4GB of ram and a 500GB HDD and all for the VFM price of $1000.00

I hate you so much... Because you're right..

I know and I feel dirty and depressed.:(

AMD's APUs should have turned the domestic laptop market on it's head, instead it's been left out to wither on the vine.

I'm betting Intel subsidises HP to produce those poor value AMD laptops so they can have them as evidence that 'competition' does exist.

not quite. There are only a few but there are AMD a10 HP laptops with 1080p screens for around $1000. True there aren't enough considering how good these APUs are but they do exist.

Yeah but really poor value for $1000. 4GB of ram and a 500GB HDD by any chance? That same laptop with a 768p screen would sell for $400. High mark up for $30 worth of laptop screen.

It's almost like they are deliberately priced so that people wouldn't buy them!

Well fancy that.

Gentlemen, I propose a solution:

1. take out motherboard out of said low res laptop
2. put in atx case (duct tape etc)
2.1 install hyper 212 on Carrizo and overclock
3. connect via hdmi to high res monitor
4. $$$

You may joke but I bet more of these chips will end up in low cost work desktops than laptops.

Still not worth a lot though.

Don't forget how awesome that 5400rpm hard drive will be!

Go to Newegg there were 3 or 4. One had a SSD.

Now decision time to wait it out for that Asus N551ZU (FX-7600P/1080p) to make its way to the states or hold out until June/July for hopes that MSI or someone else makes a nice FX-8800P 15.6"/17.3" laptop. My A10 Trinity based laptop is holding on, but at almost 3 years old I'm getting the itch for a new laptop.

That's not AMD's fault. I feel like a chump for paying the extra money for the i7 laptop I got for myself over the holiday season. My wifes A10 laptop that cost almost half as much actually feels exactly the same in everything except gaming which the A10 does better. Honestly though, there is no such thing as a gaming laptop. If you want to shell out over $1000 dollars for a laptop that can play games better than an APU go ahead, but I would rather spend the money on a small form factor that actually uses a GPU thats not gimped or misleading.

I paid $1100 for my i7 2630QM back in 2011 and my wife has an A10 laptop (right next to me). AMD did a terrible job of dictating laptop specs with their partners, its a fine laptop but my i7 is much older and still does a much better job for me.

I can't comment on gaming, my laptop comes with a 6770M and I think my wife's laptop is better.

As for Carrizo, I wouldn't expect miracles. Its for sure an upgrade on an older set but we can't expect anything new till 2016 from AMD. What we get in the mean time is rehashed older stuff on newer processes with additional support.

hmmm, high density cpu cores occupying ~30 less die-space than their steamroller equivalent...

give me MOAR (than four)!

i realise Carizzo isn't a desktop product, and optimised for low power rather than high performance, but its frustrating that amd has such a kaleioscope of technology that is always badly assmebled into mismatched platforms:

want a high-performance 125W cpu with lots of cores and high speed? sure, but here is a completely backward circa 2010 platform to run it on!

want a really good platform with PCIe 3.0 from the CPU, on CPU memory design, built in USB 3.0 and Sata3, with a single chip controller solution? FM2+ d00d, awesomes, but four core kaveri!

want a high-IPC CPU core on a high density process that should be great for high-perofmance multi-core CPU's? yeah, but mobile only!

want a next-gen super high IPC cpu core designed for multi-core products? hell yeah, but you won't have a high-end PC business to sell it into in 2016 as it's dieing on its arse, right now!

Yep AMD really have got some odd visions of how stuff works.

They now say they don't want to get involved in Chromebooks as the market isn't needing moar power right now.

Like anyone ever complained seriously about having too much power? I know I've complained enough when customers bring me their AMD E1 CPU craptops to fix which don't have enough power. You don't seem to worry about that AMD!

So AMD will wait till the Chromebook market is mature and ARM and Intel have all the market sown up and then bleat on how once again they have been frozen out.

Some fab processes lend themselves to high performance silicon, some work better with minimizing leakage (efficiency).

I'm fairly certain that this final result is/was Jim's move, "shining the turd", so that it stinks as little as possible.

Jim historically doesn't make bad products so when 2016 rolls around we'll get to see what he's been actually designing......as opposed to trying to fix someone design issues.

Wonder if they'll be outsourcing designs for the CPU with the new products as well.

A10/8GB/1600x900/1TB/$780

3 more laptops for under $900 with 8GB RAM/1TB and A series CPU

Took me all of 5 minutes to find.

4 machines in total! Well done.

Now...how many Intel alternatives were there?

And what point does that go to prove? Honestly in the low power envelope AMD is stiff competition and the percentage goes to prove Intels less than moral and ethical business practices, not their competitiveness.

It proves some people talk out of their ass without thinking. Better just to keep your mouth shut than to show your ignorance.

So what is your point? You are being very vague.

When someone gets called out for a blatantly false statement they fire back with an idiotic, "LOL is that all"!

Instead of just saying oops I was wrong they stoop to ignorant/childish comments. It wasn't directed at you.

No problem, just couldn't tell your stance from your statement. But you are correct. Seems they are more about flaming than facts.

Well guys hopefully you won't have to hold your breath too long for the shelves to be bursting full of decent spec Carrizo laptops. Let me know when it happens.

Trust me I'm an AMD fan but I just know that AMD is slowly being forced out of desktop and laptop market. Give it another year and it will be very very slim pickings.

Yes on paper AMD are stiff competition but how does that currently translate to real life product on shelves and choice for the informed consumer?

I'm aware that Intel is loading the deck. All I'm saying is guys , that AMD can make all the lovely wonderful chips it can, it just won't translate into meaningful sales or market penetration. The OEMs are sewn up by Intel.

Thats a huge shame. I'd love the online stores to be full of high spec A10 APU equipped AMD laptops like we see the deluxe Intel based models.

But chances are it will never happen.

Intel has the OEMs sewn up because the products they put out destroy AMD's equivalent offerings in everything except absolute price or fringe graphical usage scenarios. The IPC is better and 28nm isn't competitive with 14nm under any circumstance.

Woohoo, ignorance... Gotta love it. Intel in the mobile space especially @14nm is not n the same performance envelope as desktop. In the low wattage space for total package =CPU+iGPU AMD actually shows some power. Carrizo if specs hold true will prove to be better than Intel, no matter 28nm/14nm.

Oh and I said 'not many' not none.

I would say 4 counts as 'not many'.

Especially when only two of those parts are actually using Kaveri, almost a year after the announcement of the mobile parts.

The other parts are Richland, which at 25w or less is not all that capable graphically compared to Intel HD 4400/4600. This is why AMD got systematically wiped off the map by Haswell while the world waited for Kaveri Mobile.

Now those Richland parts sell for bottom dollar to clear stock, which again makes it difficult to convince OEMs to bite on the "new hotness"
