Wikipedia Banning Editors Over Gamergate Controversy

Apparently Wikipedia is having a rough time keeping its editors from getting involved in all the Gamergate controversy so they had to dish out some bans.

A group of trusted, long-term volunteer English Wikipedia editors (known as the Arbitration Committee) is now reviewing the conduct of the editors who participated on the Gamergate controversy article discussions. Their mandate is to review editor conduct, and address disruptions so that Wikipedia can remain a civil, productive place for all editors. They may do so through issuing warnings, bans, or other means. The Committee does not consider the identity or beliefs of contributors, nor do they make editorial decisions on the content or quality of Wikipedia articles.

wish i could edit (+ DIDN'T RTFA ): this is actually updated from the last I read about it. Looks like they added back in a bunch of stuff that wasn't in the wiki just a few weeks ago and are showing a much more neutral representation of things now.

previously it was very one sided anti-gg

on further reading it still is TBH. That's what happens when wikipedia only accepts linking from published articles... and all the published articles are biased to anti-gg....

Gamergate is nothing but a struggle to see who is the least pathetic in an industry full of ass hats. Even the so-called victims are pieces of shit with mental health issues.

Well, when a breakdown of edits to the article looks like this:

http://i.imgur.com/EoVIAXy.png (not embedding due to the massive size)

And then you take into account that the largest section of edits come from people who are vehemently opposed to Gamergate (Ryulong, NorthBySouthBaranof, TheRedPenOfDoom to name a few), one of whom was even paid for his services (Ryulong), as well as also taking part in off-site harassment of the opposing party, you can start to see why the banhammer had to end it. The problem is, because of these decisions, the same people and organizations who were already accused of nepotism, cronyism, and corruption by Gamergate supporters in the first place have simply come to their own conclusion that this decision is "anti-feminist" and therefore misogynist by proxy since it isn't anti-Gamergate. Some have even started to paint Jimmy Wales as being a man who endorses harassment, simply for attempting to take a neutral stance (a very common occurrence these days for many who simply want to keep out of the argument).

If Wikipedia is an attempt at an encyclopedia of knowledge, then it must maintain neutrality. When an editor is actively fighting against that neutrality due to emotional concerns or strong beliefs (not ideas), then they need to recuse themselves. The problem is, the project starting to fail, and more and more editors are being brought on who simply agree with those that are effectively tenured into their positions, regardless of whether or not they are being factual, and many of the long-term editors have simply left the site out of frustration, or forced out.

Was it the crazy one?

Its like people who calling for teaching intelligent design in the classroom because we need "both perspectives represented". Bullshit. Sexist trash need to be called out on their BS. Not to mention the rampant use of N word on internet game voice chat.

Jesus Christ, have you looked at the current state of the Gamergate wiki? It is not just painfully onesided, but is an absolute propaganda piece absolutely littered with not just omissions of facts, but blatant lies.

Wow, just wow, and so their solution to the controversy is to simply censor anyone that remotely supports the facts of Gamergate, giving SJW feminists carte blanche to delete and vandalize the article.

Well Wiki, whatever little credibility you had left is now gone. RIP.

The english one is probably a lost cause but the spanish one is pretty neutral.

also, one of the editors that was banned (not just topic-banned) still has friends on Wiki that will block any edits to articles he's written even if it is unrelated.

Ah, Gamergate. A quest to see which den of trolls can shower the most attention on Anita Sarkeesian, the biggest attention whore on earth. Before all this, no one outside of the Internets knew who this woman was - now she's being interviewed by Stephen Colbert and getting airtime on ABC News.

Excellent job, Gamergate. You played right into that shrieking feminist's hands.

Sarkeesian isn't important, and its never been about one person. While granted it has gotten her attention, I'm pretty sure that ignoring Heinrich Himmler so that no one will know his name wouldn't exactly have been very productive in solving anything. Gamergate is about shedding light on the lack of ethics in game journalism and its platform as a tool for a tiny group of SJWs to slander the gaming community, and in no way about one individual.

And to add to that, absolutely in no shape or form was it appreciated when the curtain was pulled back to reveal that dirty truth, which is why they so vehemently tried to redirect the argument playing the victim, distract as much as possible from the facts of the case that began the whole movement, and even redefining what gamergate is about (as seen in the current iteration of the Wiki). In a way it reminds me of arguments I had with my ex, where she would still end up "winning" the argument even when I was 100% factually correct by at some point redefining the entire point of contention and going on some tangent. So instead of acknowledging that I was indisputably factually correct and she was wrong, its now about tone or disrespect or name I called her that's more important robbing me of my victory and forcing me to apologize and make concessions, lol! A brilliant tactic, don't get me wrong, but not exactly lending itself to promoting the truth. Facts are facts, the ever worsening trend for angry feminists and unethical journalists to abuse their platform, a dying one at that, to attack the gaming community with a relentless and annoying barrage of non-gaming SJW propaganda is something that wasn't going to just "go away" if you pretended like it wasn't happening and ignored it.

ROFL, good one.

My view: If a gaming site becomes full of SJWs riding along on their high horses, I'll simply stop going to that site. That's the only real way we have of fighting against that sort of thing and it's better than wasting your time arguing with irrational control freaks who know what is better for you than you do.

Unfortunately, as gaming grows more popular, it becomes more and more of a target for those who wish to control how we think and act. This should be pretty obvious to those of us who have watched the gaming world develop and change over the years. Back when it was almost solely the domain of geeks and nerds, no one paid us any mind and we were allowed to enjoy ourselves freely in our own little world. But now... now we need to be tamed. We need to be more "sensitive", more "tolerant" (words they get to define) to others. The thought police have arrived with their jack boots and they probably aren't ever going to go away -- the best we can do is avoid them and, to a degree, ignore them.

Well, this thread has gone all Godwin's Law and image macro in what, less than 20 posts?

You would think a Gamergate topic would be filled with enlightened conversation and factual observations.

(because it seems wiki isn't a reliable source to get this info from [irony or something])

pbassjunk -- there aren't any reliable sources, because it's all about perception and emotions. Most of the facts are disputed, and those who know the most about it are likely to be the most invested in it, and thus the least likely to be objective in their viewpoints. YMMV.

For those of us who enjoy living under rocks, wtf is gamer gate?
Culture war between neckbearded channer trolls and left-wing bloggers.

One side shouts "Patriarchy!" at the 4chan virgins while the trolls send unwanted pizza deliveries to the homes of feminist Tumblr bloggers. Been going on since August I believe.

Whole thing has devolved to the point where both side's arguments have descended into insanity. Best to just leave it alone, it only continues because people talk about it. There really aren't too many people involved in the whole thing.

The inevitable result a spat born of conflict that originated long before we were all born and will continue long after we all die.

Just redirect the article to "Pissing Contest". Problem solved. Sheesh. It's been known for a very long time that games media are in general, pretty unprofessional. Big deal. If you care that much about games, you know where to go. Meanwhile, said unprofessional media "journalists" are acting like children by trying to deflect criticism by throwing up a pathetically specious smoke screen about misogyny.

Twitter is full of twits. Better just to ignore it.

Short answer, don't bother learning about.

Long answer, you have two sides. Media says it's about sexual harassment against woman in games and death threats. Gamers say it's about game journalists having sex with publishers and giving those games good reviews. I say it's a bunch of gossip.

Then there are intelligent, honest people like Totalbiscuit constantly condemning the harassment and trolls on both sides while speaking out in favor of better ethics in the industry (and walking the walk with his own business operations, not just talking the talk) getting constantly attacked by the anti-GG crowd. Certainly, there is a huge amount of idiots on the GG side, but that is unfortunately the case with every big controversy. However, there is only one side that is made up almost ENTIRELY of people attacking ethics, lying constantly, and harassing the few prominent honest/civil people in the debate, the anti-GG side.

I actually knew little about GG and did not realize it was a big deal for a long time. I figured both sides were mostly idiots with little difference between them, as is the case with most issues in the world today unfortunately. That was until I started seeing pro-GG and neutral-GG people publishing professionally-written, thoughtful, rational arguments condemning the trolls/harassers claiming to be "GG" or "anti-GG" and speaking out in favor of better ethics in the industry. And when I started seeing those statements, I started saw thew true side of "anti-GG." They were not just attacking the trolls/harassers on GG, they were openly supporting money-over-ethics positions and launching personal attack after personal attack, insults, mass lies/rumors/propaganda against even those pro-GG individuals doing nothing but calling for more civil discussion and speaking out in favor of ethics.

The biggest bigots and the most vicious, dishonest, mean-spirited people of all are among the anti-GG crowd. And I would not have even been actively opposed to them if they were not so aggressively mass-attacking the rational, good-intentioned people in the debate. i do not know how their tactics are working with others, but they certainly shot themselves in the foot when it came to me.

That TotalBiscuit guy is pretty cool. Has some sweet Akita dogs and a bitchin' gaming rig. Plus his fulltime job is playing PC games and talking about them on YouTube.

Not gonna lie, I'm hella envious of the Biscuit man.

I should also point out that it is not just mostly anonymous people doing the harassing as is the case with people on the GG side. The actual self-proclaimed anti-GG leaders and most prominent anti-GG people in the industry are among those responsible for the hatred, lies, and attacks being put out there. They are even going so far as attempting to blacklist anyone prominent that refuses to support them. It's like the McCarthy era in Hollywood all over again. Luckily, many of the people they are going after are mostly self-employed.

Entirely wrong.

Gamergate was the revealing of the corruption, fraud, nepotism, and general lack of ethics in gaming journalism and called for a stop to using that medium for SJW propaganda to berate the gaming community.

Then the accused went from saying "well, we're not journalists, we're just bloggers" to excuse themselves from journalistic integrity, to trying to confuse the issue and go on a tangent by playing the victim, trying to gain sympathy through fake death threats to try and overshadow the original issue, and resorting to the stereotypical reflex response of SJWs to accuse their critics of being entirely comprised of misogynistic cis white-male bastards that need to check their privilege.

To pretend that both the grass-roots community movement and the accused are trying to distract from the original issue is nonsense. The gaming community wants to stick to the facts of the corruption, as that's all their ammunition right there.

TB is not gamergate. He's an actual games journalist who takes his job and journalistic ethics very seriously. If anyone has a good reason to talk about that, he does. His career is built on the idea that ethical journalism is important. He's not wrong either, it's just that as someone who simply plays games and doesn't make a living off of them, I don't really feel justified in feeling as strongly about it as he does. I trust him, it's just not that important to my life in the grand scheme of things. I'm glad he's there, but I'd be happier to see that kind of energy directed toward national and world news more often.

I could've sworn he said he's NOT a journalist...however he takes ethics very seriously. And he's a cancer survivor.

Originally, he was a neutral and from the very get-go, a denouncer of harassment.

Except SJW psychos pushed him over.

now THAT'S topkek.

also, there's more than 2 sides and there are plenty of trolls all around (welcome to the Internet, class 101).

Oh I absolutely agree that in the grand scheme of things, GG is an extremely trivial issue compared to countless other things going on in the world, some of which are often reported on this very site. I also do not put people like TB anywhere near the same level of those that courageously speak out on bigger issues. Though, TB has made some intelligent statements on some important non-gaming issues too (and been attacked for those as well).

But what makes me feel strongly about GG (while still realizing its relative insignificance) is that it is actually a symptom of some of the most important issues of all that we are increasingly facing:
  • The most honest people, on all issues in the world, are becoming more and more demonized every day for not sticking to the politically-correct messages (happening in GG debate), the politically correct ones being the most deceitful.
  • Important, complex issues are being painted in increasingly black-and-white terms and simplified to levels where the "debate" no longer addresses the significant parts of the issues (happening in GG debate).
  • Even when there are points of a debate where there is clearly right and wrong, the "right" position gets entirely censored by the mainstream media (happening in GG debate).
  • Groups that were once minorities at-large in terms of their power/influence in society and were fighting for equality and human rights are now morphing into majorities in terms of influence/power, with former majorities (white males) becoming the new oppressed minorities instead of being equal (happening in GG debate). As a result, counter-prejudice is growing in some cases. And the more everyone becomes radicals that are interested only in hurting someone or "taking down" someone/something, with no desire for actual universal justice, the more everyone keeps fragmenting into more and more "sides" with even the former-minorities slowly beginning to turn on each other as well.

Even the phrase "social justice" has now been contaminated with this stupid SJW thing, when it used to be one of the most honorable. Every label for everything is becoming contaminated because everyone is going nuts about everything with no concern for rational thought/action/discussion, no concern for the well-being of anyone but themselves and/or their interests, and no concern for the long-term consequences of their increasing insanity. And yes, humans have always been irrational, selfish, and short-sighted. But humans have not always had such widespread access to education and information, which makes behavior like this even more ridiculous now, especially since it is growing instead of getting better. The GG debate is like a small, trivial simulation of everything wrong going on with every major issue in the world.

For those of us who enjoy living under rocks, wtf is gamer gate?

Some not so pretty girl who is a game designer cheated on her bf by sleeping with like 4 or 5 guys who are all game reviewers. The girl, Z - Q also probably slept with like dozen other guys too.

Boyfriend or ex-bf found out, logged and saved everything and published the evidence online. Besides the obvious cheating turns out this girl has been married several times ( loool psycho anyone?) and changed her name.

Anyways...most gamers saw this and realized that game developers are trading favors with game journalists for positive reviews. So they first launched attacks on the game design girl and the journalists she slept with.

The girl, being a crazy" feminist" ( not really a feminist, but more of a sociopath) claimed that it was all an attack on women and games and out of nowhere thousands of butthurtz SJW and white knights came to her defense.

tl;dr
