The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

Reading this makes me sad... I stepped away from PC gaming for 2 years right before GW2 came out, which was one of the titles I was anticipating more than any other. Especially given the amount of time I spent in GW1, which to this day remains my favorite MMO.

I've been on the fence about buying it. Is the game even worth getting into at this point?

I would still say buy it just catch it on sale. No monthly fees so you can make your own mind up. It's a beautiful game to explore and the combat is solid. You'll probably reach the same conclusions must others have but you'll be able to return if anet gets their shit together.

Lets reiterate....

Anet basically promised that items like this wouldnt ever even exist to begin with and flat out promised to have no grinding in the game. And you are defending this shit why exactly?

I get it, you really really like the game but the fact that you cannot argue is they fucking lied to the community and pulled a bait and switch...
Since launch legendaries have had no stat advantage over any other weapon. They're just a skin, and most of them are ridiculous looking and I personally wouldn't waste my time going for. The quest to gather everything and do world completion culminates in the reward of displaying the skin, it's an achivement, just like the hundreds of others in the game. Why is this one so particularly upsetting to you?
http://www.mmorpg.com/blogs/Meleaga...old-Arenanet-and-GW2-Out-For-Nexon-Investment

Here is a good read for those that still have no fucking clue what actually happened with this game.
Actually, the guy who wrote the article is the one without "a fucking clue." Ironic that you referenced it despite its inaccuracies, makes you look like you don't have a clue either by assosciation. Despite all his doomsday babble, here we are two years later and no new gear tiers have been introduced (go check out SWTOR if you want an actual example of a gear treadmill). The world didn't implode, the game stayed the same, and the people crying about it two years ago look even more ridiculous.

Honestly, the neckbeards crying about this are really doing the gaming community in general a huge disservice, which is expected because the basis is selfish and immature. For $25 on sale there's no other game out there I can think of that gives a remotely similar value for the amount of content available. The issues some are whining about are so esoteric or infinitisimal it's ridiculous, don't let it turn you off. You can buy the game, level a few characters and have a blast with WvW, boss runs, zergs, playing with friends, pick up groups, PvP, etc. and never have any issues.

I have to agree with most of your points. GW2 is an insane value content wise.

First off the new trait system will cost you 43gold and 360 skill points to unlock all traits not 25gold. Before the change it cost you 4gold and 0 skill points. Which is over 10 times the cost in gold.
This is already false because the new traits and associated prices didn't even exist before the patch that changed this.
Lets not forget that skill points are also used for those things called skills. So when you hit level 80 and have 100% map completion you will still need over 200 skill points more to unlock every skill and trait so that you can do what you used to be able to start doing at level 60 in the old trait system and that is play with builds.
So make some choices, what's the problem? Or do the PVE quests which are regularly run by everyone. The game is more than a character creator. Personally I enjoy a quest or achievement that gets me to do something I normally wouldn't attempt (PvP monthlies, WvW Season achievements, etc.).
You used to be able to level in any way you want. Want to WvW and hate PVE, then just WvW. Don't like WvW and just want to PVE, then just PVE. Don't like WvW or PVE, then just PVP. All of those were expectable ways of just you know playing and like the manifesto at launch said "play it the way you want", I know its a crazy idea but yeah you used to actually be able to just play the game. Now after the new trait system was launched you are forced to grind and buy gold or go play areas of the game you may not like. Don't like WvW, that's to bad you have to go there to get key traits. Don't like PVE, too bad you have to go there and do events and map completion for other key traits. What you have said is exactly what the game used to be but now its been taken away to force players in to content they do not like and were not playing. The new "NPE" is just as bad as SWGs "NGE". It has done nothing to teach anything or help new players. All that it has done is dumb down content and level gate everything much farther out than it used to be. It does nothing to explain the things that are unique to GW2 such as dodging, downed state, and rallying. Also how does it help new people to increase the cost on skills and abilities when this game is so gold starved they will have a hard time getting 1 gold with out buying it, maybe that's it they just expect new players to whip out the credit card.
Bolded the parts that are blatantly wrong. First, the NPE does all those things, I know, I just played through it. You should experience it yourself before going on a tirade and looking foolish. Secondly, the game isn't gold starved. You can literally sell anything and make several gold an hour. One of the main reasons for a lot of the changes we see is to manage the games exploding economy from the influx of players. Managing inflation is a must in a modern MMO, if you don't understand that, you shouldn't be discussing it.

The only events that went undone before the megaserver were in midlevel areas that weren't really worth doing anyways. Its a flat out lie to say events aren't broken or uncompletable and then you try to cover it up and down play it by saying just buy it, like they are cheap. Your condescending comments and insults will not help your spin. I'm not sure why you try to attack me for not liking what they have done to what used to be a good game. I only state what I have experienced and what my opinion of that experience is. To make it easy GW2 used to be a good game with great potential but now its just a P2W grinder.
You're just sitting here sulking when you can't refute any of the rebuttals I've made. Maybe you just sit in a city for hours complaining about how much the game sucks and that's why you have no gold or achievements. For anyone that actually plays the game and wants to enjoy it, there's no barriers.

There's a lot of nonsense being thrown about here by people that clearly don't play the game and have some personal vendetta because they haven't left their mom's basement since GW2 assualted them. Whatever, not worth my effort to continue correcting this nonsense when I'd rather be playing anyway. To reiterate, no one forces you to do a thing in the game, there's no gear treadmill; specifically: the top tier Ascended gear introduced 2 years ago hasn't budged, and the armor is <5% higher stats than the readily available Exoctic gear that is now dirt cheap compared to launch (funny how that was never mentioned).

There's a lot of ignorance being displayed by people who think ANet is a charity and should cater to their specific needs and play styles, like the people that work there don't need to eat or make a paycheck. Oh, all while never paying a monthly fee, don't forget that one either. Games are a business, businesses need to make money to survive. I'm quite happy not being forced into a monthly fee to keep playing, like the cash shop allows. I come back to the game every few months and enjoy it.

For $25 on sale the game is a ton of fun and offers a lot of content, value-wise I don't think there's a competing title out there atm. I'd suggest pick it up, try it out for yourself, you can always come back because there's no monthly fee.

The most telling thing about this is that a previously active thread is completely dead now aside from you flocking to its defense. And your the only person whos defending the game, I'd say that says enough about public opinion regarding it.

This is something that I actually agree with you on, Vlad. :D

I do agree with this, but it seems like the only active MMO thread is WoW and thats because of the new expansion. I stepped away from WoW and Wildstar because of its gear treadmill ALONE. I hate getting bored or burned out of the game, coming back 2 months later and being the bottom of the barrel. Anytime you would take a short break you were screwed. When i redownloaded GW2 in my only exotic gear and a few rares I easily went toe to toe with people in full ascended. My legendary grind with twilight holds NO substantial gains over something you can just loot easily or buy for a few gold off the auction house. The high end expensive stuff is there to keep the hardcore dedicated players busy, while the casuals are in more casual gear. Its really nothing more then skins honestly. Before I decided to build my legendary, never once did i feel a sensation of grinding. (maybe because i never had gw1 experience). Exploring the world, doing quests, Hoping into different WvW/PvP kept everything enjoyable. I chose what i wanted to do, or how i wanted to level. I even gained a few levels from crafting items from professions. As a casual, I feel GW2 is the best value out there in terms of relaxed gameplay, Least amount of grinding, awesome community, play how you want, and no gear treadmill unless you want to go down the grindy road like I have for twilight and twilight only. The content is astounding for a non monthly MMO and its only getting better. I think ill be playing for quite awhile and I have the worst game attention span.

You haven't given any rebuttals you just flat out lie and insult people. I could keep breaking everything down and state actual facts but I'm done with you as you aren't worth the time. I'm glad you enjoy it still but the game has gone in a very bad direction. It was a great game but now its a bargain bin waste. If you can pick it up for under $30 bucks it might be ok to play a little here and there but its not a game like most MMOs where you play it for the long haul. Which is what I thought an MMO was about.

This is $20 on guildwars2.com(till Dec 9)
I'm debating if I should jump in or just play more TERA...

I just started playing again after hitting level cap on wow. I missed it

Heres to hoping for an expansion announcement this weekend at PAX!

And an FYI to those not currently playing, game will be on sale this weekend for 75% off and it is a double XP weekend. Sale/Double XP starts at 8AM pacific 1/24.

Well, with all of the advertisements about "The point of no return" it sure sounds like an expansion is coming.

In any case, I haven't even bought this yet, so I'll probably bite for 75% off.

I have to say, it's kind of ironic (and sad) to see this thread now... . I'm actually planning on trying it out again since my guild is making a chapter there, but I doubt much has changed since I made my posts over the last while (and got flamed for the exact same criticisms that people now are leveling :p).

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS YES YES YES.... YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS so freaking excited My twilight is still relevant

RYTLOKKKKK i want a upgraded armor on my statue of him in my store :O

So...have they announced a new expansion or what? I have been watching the stream for a bit and it just seems like more "phat loots!" "pvp objectives more important."

Have they announced anything that would make players who left the game (IE got bored of it) want to come back?

Yeah they just announced the expansion.

New continent
New Profession - Revenant
New Mastery System that will include class progression (they used one example, Rangers will be able to become a Druid)
New WvW Borderland
New Competitive PvP mode Strongholds
PvP Ranking system
Guild Halls

Few other things I may have missed, but they will have info up and release more info as the expansion gets closer. No release date yet.

It only took them this damn long to get their heads out of their asses and add guild halls? and what looks like a gvg-ish system? I have no clue how/why it took them that long this company developed this game so poorly its despicable

Too bad i have 0 interested in coming back to the game, it couldnt even hold my attention to level 10

Cool, we'll all be having a blast

New expansion looks awesome, I'll have to get through some of the older content and catch up.

Really looking forward to this expansion. I have one of every profession leveled and geared up as well as 3 Guardians. I have enough tomes to insta max 2 more characters.

I hope the profession evolutions are not permanently branched - that's not really their style though.

Rangers will use staves, Necromancers get Great swords and the trailer hints at Engineer hammers and mesmer shields. Hopefully each profession gets multiple new weapons.

my main is a guardian... assuming we get a bow. I am really interested in the lore. I've spent many nights watching youtube videos just about it. it's some pretty deep and awesome stuff. Now that we think primordial has some interesting stuff going down things will get interesting.

I wish I could get into this game. I probably reinstall about every month and fire it up only to lose interest immediately. I don't know why, but this game just doesn't grab me.

Great to hear about their new expansion. I need to get back into Guild Wars 2 - I've basically never made it much past level 10. I do really wish they could implement the Season 1 Living World storyline though for those of us who missed it, similar to what they've done with Season 2. There seems to be great storyline and lore elements.

There are some policies I like and some that I don't (I really wish items had sane default "non-dyed" appearances for instance. Not a big fan of having a "slot" dyed entirely. Sure, give people dye options but at least have a default, sane appearance of an item to start with!) , but overall they seem to be on my short list of major MMOs with some staying power and uniqueness: World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, Final Fantasy XIV, and The Secret World.

I really hope the new dungeons aren't just one big rolling fest. I was really turned off by the heavy reliance on that mechanic.

Very excited about this expansion!

New continent - Not too pumped about the jungle, but we knew it was coming soon or later
New Profession - Revenant - Reminds me of a cross between a thief/mesmer that uses heave armor. Sounds awesome!
New Mastery System that will include class progression (they used one example, Rangers will be able to become a Druid) - Yeah this should be sweet. This will add a whole new lawyer to every profession! Really interested to see what Guardians and Warriors get (my two favorite classes).
New WvW Borderland - I'm a WvWnut, so this is awesome.
New Competitive PvP mode Strongholds - This sounds great. I could never really get into the old PvP system. This sounds like fun though!
PvP Ranking system - meh, Not hardcore enough to care a/b ranks
Guild Halls - This will be nice. Im in a few active guilds. This should be cool to see how they each develop their Guild Hall.

I loved the idea of guild halls, but honestly I think it ruined the community in EQ2 when they put it in that game. The guild halls were awesome though...

I just think it's funny that Guild Wars 1 had guild halls from the get-go, but it has taken them this long to implement it here.

The bad taste is still in my mouth from launch. I'm referring to the lowering of drop rates to funnel people to the cash shop. GW1 was in my top 3 games of all time so I had high hopes. Anet sold out big time. It's still one of the best values in gaming IMO but I'm still very butt hurt.

I see this posted now and again and don't quite understand how or why this thought process came to be. I guess people heard the words "cash shop" and got out the pitchforks before they thought about it. Explain how lowering drop rates would funnel people to the cash shop.
