Is there a program or another way to alter the flag so I can convert the *.WTV file to another type of file? I am using one of those infamous ATI Digital Cable Wonder tuners that were never meant to be sold to retail

Anyway I plan to upgrade to a SiliconDust HD Home Run Prime 3 tuner cable card device so I can ditch Windows 7 MC

I found out that Charter only marks some of the channels with the copy once flag (Example FX FXX FXX HD, and also probably HBO, Cinemax but I can't confirm those as they are not in my cable plan)

PS: Charter Sucks but it is all I can get do to a greedy person in my apartments management signing a 20 yr contract for a big kickback

I don't think anyone has found a way to beat the Copy Once protection flag. You will not be able to ditch WMC if you want to keep watching channels that have the Copy Once flag.

If it is marked with Copy Once, you won't be doing anything with the file other than watching it on the system which it was recorded on.

Going to leave this here for you: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2009/05/federal-court-upholds-fcc-ban-on-exclusive-cable-deals/

My two cents: .WTV can be converted to another file format, provided it's not copy once and therefore encrypted as already mentioned.

Something like ffmpeg can work if you just want to do a quick container swap. VLC may or may not do a container swap as well, I haven't messed with that part of it at all. If you want to do a re-encode to reduce the filesize (like say.. take the video from MPEG-2 to h.264) than something like handbrake should (in theory) work.

I'm on Charter and about the only things copy protected are Digital Tier 1/2 and the premium movie channels. Occasionally, a show will pop up that's copy protected on AMC or Comedy Central etc but in general (or at least in my Charter area), the locals and basic cable channels are all copy free.

But yeah, if it's copy protected, you can't do anything with the file.

Same in my area
I mostly the unprotected channels but one show I recorded (The Simpsons on FXXHD) I tried to convert it to a *.ts and the program was throwing an error because the file was marked with the copy once flag
I just though I'd ask and it looks like there is not a way around that flag

One thing that I don't think was mentioned and I forgot to mention.
If you do ditch Windows media center for something else than you won't be able to record anything marked copy once at all. Sadly WMC has a monopoly there.

Looks like game over for me as it looks like Charter is now marking all channels with the copy once flag

Which area are you in? Still all copy-free here on Charter except for the movie channels

WMC will also still work on 7/8. Still all copy-free except the movie channels here in California on Charter
