Microsoft, in an effort to be more transparent, has released more diversity statistics for public consumption.

The new statistics released by Microsoft are disappointing at best. The company’s report to the federal government says that 76 percent of its overall workforce is male, while only 24 percent is female. 61 percent are white. 29 percent are Asian. 5 percent are Hispanic/Latino. And only 3 percent are black.

I wish all this PC crap about diversity in the work place would just die.

The way a business should be run is that you hire the most qualified and appropriate people for the jobs you need to fill.

Hiring black, hispanics, asians, whites, etc. just to meet some stupid diversity expectation is completely and utterly retarded.

Hiring / firing someone because of their race / sex is illegal anyway.

Go to any university and take a look at their engineering school. Even nowadays with the push for more women in technical fields the student ratio is like 10:1 male to female. Can't really be "diverse" if the people aren't there.

It's really quite funny when you think about it, we all have protection under the law for equality in hiring.. but certain demographics want you to hire them BECAUSE they're in those demographics. It's never about the most qualified person anymore.

Makes your head spin.

My opinions are my own, and I am not implying that discrimination doesn't happen.

This kind of reporting / hiring practice, however, in and of itself, is discriminating.

It sucks that you can't hire the best qualified applicant anymore.

I remember it was a lot worse 25 years ago when I was in EE school well at least at the University of Pittsburgh. Many of my EE classes were 20 to 30:1.

I got one SQL developer in my team, and he only knows how to select * from table ...
Yeah he got hired 'cuz we need more diversity in the team ... Now I have to do double the work as the lead 'cuz the stupid diversity ...

Yep. I had a recent experience....though not in "industry." I occasionally do the initial interview for potential undergraduate research students for my doctoral advisor (since I also work for him). We had the displeasure of interviewing a candidate that had a terrible attitude, lackluster grades, and an unjustified overconfidence. Needless to say I put that one into the non-rec pile. This particular candidate happened to also be a black female. When the hire was made (happened to be a white male) a mysterious  discrimination complaint was filed. Guess who received a veiled threat to his PhD funding if such an incident ever happened again. Guess who also now has less than qualified lab assistant starting next month.

It's funny because discrimination certainly exists, but for reasons infinitely more trivial than skin color or gender.

I DIDN'T LIKE HIS WINDSOR KNOT.

It thins out quickly after their freshman year. By the time graduation comes along it's probably pretty close to 20:1 based on what I've observed at the three different schools I've been to so far.

It was more like 35:1 for me when I graduated in EE, most females I knew where in petroleum and chemical. Though there were more in CS than any engineering department.

Not only that but it should be illegal because it contradicts the EEOE about hiring based on race.
AA is and always has been illegal since day one and it should be abolished.

Intelligence, work history, ethics should be the more important, not race.

I wish i could get hired based off the color of my skin and not actual work skills. If you dont have the skills you dont get hired. Its not a race issue.

Probably going to come off as a "OMG looking for a handout black guy" here, but whatevs.

We as a country and a society are not yet 50 years removed from a period of time when blacks in particular, amongst other miniorities, were not afforded equal protection under the law. The Jim Crow laws the were written into existence during the Reconstruction era not only disenfranchised minorites (in particular, blacks) from Voting, it also disallowed them from owning businesses in certain states or territories, working in certain job fields, marring interacially etc... These laws were not struck down with the emancipation proclamation. As a result, the laws, and much more importantly, the negative opinions and bias towards blacks in particular carried over WELL into the 20th century. This bias and hatred often manifested itself (when you couldnt quite get away with outright beating and killing them) in making sure you excluded them from any kind of economic and academic prosperity - which effectively served to keep Blacks as the poorer, less educated class of people in America. It started the trend of intentionally defunding areas where black people (were made to) live and caused the schools that educated them to fall behind. It started the trend of "White Flight" because the white people affected by the budget cuts could easily relocate and find jobs and homes elsewhere, further exasperating the economic depression that the community was already facing. Now you have a community that is 80 percent black, with no help from the state or local government, no jobs, piss poor schools... Poor education + no economic prospects = criminal breeding ground. This was nearly 100 years ago, and we're still fighting the same war today. But anyways, but to affirmative action.

Affirmative Action is a program built to combat this (nowadays unintentionally) ingrained injustice - Its not supposed to be about hiring blacks and other minorities simply because they are not-white, its because this country has hundreds of years of systematically instituted racist laws against colored people and the people most able to change that, (namely the nearly exclusively white) personnel decision makers of employment/admissions were either willfully (or unknowingly) denying qualified minorities access to Jobs and higher education, based on the bias they have inherited through decades, centuries of the status quo regarding minorities.

It sucks that you can't hire the best qualified applicant anymore.

But what if the best qualified applicant is a N*gger, or Ch*nk or a Sp*c?

That question is why Affirmative Action exists.

To the person above dealing with that slacker you call a co-worker, blame your HR person cause if they couldnt cut the mustard they shouldnt have gotten the job. You should punch that guy in the face for sucking at his job that bad. I have NEVER applied for a job I didn't feel I was infinitely qualified for, because idea of faking the funk to get a better paycheck makes me nauseous and undermines the black guy coming behind me. Long story short, the system is there for a real reason, and should stay there until somebody definitively proves that racist hiring practices have been eradicated from the workplace.

^THIS!!! To infinity and beyond!

It's not really that surprising. The media has many minorities and most women convinced they aren't welcomed into high tech positions. They have people convinced they wouldn't be hired even if they had the skills because of the supposed racism and sexism.

The fact of the matter is that it simply isn't so. The disparity is because the constant reports of racism and sexism makes it seem like there is resistance, so many women and minorities don't even try. They don't want to have to fight through this resistance. We need good people in software development. We need people to TRY, no matter what their skin color is of if they happen to be female. In my experience, women generally write better code because they tend to be more detail oriented, and don't make the detail mistakes that men make. Also, women developers tend to be MUCH easier to work with when there is a bug, as they don't have the overdeveloped egos men tend to have. Tell a male developer there is a big, and he'll try to blame it on many other things before even checking his own code, while women will take a full analysis approach, and not consider it a personal assault.

I know my company has had to move many jobs overseas simply because we can't get the jobs filled here. (We closed down our India development center because we'd pay to train people up, and then they'd leave for other jobs. However, we have had to get some contractors from both India and Kiev because of jobs that weren't getting filled. We're still trying to get those jobs filled.) We have had to keep many extremely egotistical and downright bad developers, no matter how bad they are tow rok with, just because we wouldn't be able to replace them. I know Microsoft is in much the same position. We just need more developers here, no matter who they are.

But what if the best qualified applicant is a N*gger, or Ch*nk or a Sp*c?

Then hire them. I don't give a crap what color, gender, or whatever is. If you're the right person for the job, you're hired.

I get where you're coming from. In some places, it's still needed. I'm in a more liberal part of the country, and while I see some discrimination, it's not a lot. I would like to see a talented employee rather than an employee that was just hired to avoid a discrimination lawsuit (exactly the same as I was hate to see an employee hired because he was the white, rich bosses son but can't tell the difference between a hole in the ground and his ass).

Some places wouldn't hire the genius low income black guy and instead would go for the ass kissing white suburbanite. Others would. I can see a need for it, but I see a lot of downside to it, too. It isn't all sunshine and rainbows. It's good and bad. I'm leaning more on the bad side in my area.

Honestly this may sound bad but compared to Wisconsin (I have worked at a publishing company, uw-milwaukee, two hospitals and a nursing home company)... these stats are awesome.

I'm use to a handful of women in various roles (leadership, less so engineering, mostly helpdesk or related departments like IT finance), 1 minority per 100 employees often african american, maybe 2-3 minorities. So usually 95%+white, 75%+ male.

Some places I've worked 100% white, 90% male. However many like minded folks want to hire minorities/woman and you can see a huge change from 2003 to present when I started IT.

It is a two way street:
a. IT departments and employeers need not to discriminate (I have heard managers behind closed doors say inappropriate comments)
b. minorities need to finish their education in wisconsin (milwaukee has a 60% dropout rate most years) to get the high tech jobs.

We need less redneck managers and more minorities going to college and getting hands on experience. however it takes open minded folks to give younger people a chance and not to discriminate.

my wife is hmong, she found her IT job in two weeks in 2013. I'm a white male, took me 6months after graduating college even though I had 3 years of IT experience at uwm.

its changing , slowly but its not just the employer. in the past many IT highschool programs were only in the suburbs as well. The milwaukee school i taught at had 10 year old computers and 1 text book per four classes. it is not an equal education system in wisconsin, minorities get a much less education from the same tax $ per student.

solution:
a. dont be a racist HR/manager
b. go to school, get educated, get experience, help others when you cant get a job
c. keep applying, encourage others to go into IT
d. fund programming and computers in the cities, if you wont buy minorities text books then give them e-texts and an ipad. an ipad+ text books. I tried buying a text book for 100$ x 100 copies (10000) and was told at milwaukee public schools that i had to buy the books from the principal's brother in law at $1000 each aka $100,000 and since our budget was $12000 we couldnt have books for students.

Let me be that guy. Affirmative action today is effectively a handout. It is equality of outcome masked as equality of opportunity. The only result of these quotas at the end of the day is to cause more social division, so mission accomplished for our corporate-feudal overlords. Tech and science companies by far hire more on merit than any other field and ironically a lot more than a place like Hollywood, which is a self-proclaimed bastion of liberal nonsense.

As an aside notice that Asians (stereotypically good at science and math) are over-represented respective to population. Conveniently the article simply ignores their existence in almost all the articles citing a diversity issue at tech companies. The only issue at tech companies is they aren't paying enough compared to investment in time and education for Americans to not go for that finance job.

my asian family is horrible at math. denying the fact that urban education is less would be denial. go spend a few days in your local urban "core" school and you will find it in much need of a do-over. then go look at the finances and see that per student, each are funded to suburban students equally.

Tech companies pay better if you aren't a computer janitor.

Maybe, just maybe, the comment here isn't "you should hire more minority applicants because they are minorities" and instead is "you should stop hiring white men because they are white men?"

I know it may be hard for some of you to grasp, but merit doesn't necessarily equal hiring only white people.

This is BS on many levels...

Let's look at other stats...what are the percentages for those going for engineering degrees? Computer Science Degrees? ETC.

I'm constantly amazed at how our government perpetuates racism. Why do they need to know what race I am on every form? (Don't they already know?) Isn't that information already IN the system?

Excuse the language, but hiring a token (insert racially discriminatory phrase) simply to fill a check box doesn't serve anyone. It simply means you hired someone who may be unqualified for the job, which only INCREASES racial problems - as those that are qualified look down on those that are there only because of the color of their skin (and thus....increasing stereotypes).

This 100%

When you are forced to work or go to school with someone who is only there because of their race, you end up with resent and a reinforcing of the stereotypes that are already in place.

I was paying for and renting my own servers when I was 14. I'd never let anyone from some school IT program configure any of my deployed hardware. If you have a real interest in a subject, especially something IT related, you will learn it on your own. I've found Cisco Academies run by school districts using dumping material, high schools can only teach trivial IT skills that will be lucky to get you a help desk job.

I know it may be hard for some of you to grasp, but merit doesn't necessarily equal hiring only white people.

The numbers actually show a preference for hiring Asian people, 29% of the workforce is asian and only 4.75% of the US population is Asian. 61% of the workforce is white and 72% of the US population is white which means they're underrepresented. Black people are severely underrepresented at 3% as compared to 12% of the population. The US census doesn't consider "Latino" a ethnicity so I couldn't get info for that, all is current as of the last census in 2010.

Obviously females are underrepresented as well at 24% compared to 51% of the population.

None of this matters at all of course, but your conclusions that "minorities" are underrepresented is patently untrue. Looking at numbers like this without considering the underlying demographics is silly.

As someone who worked at MS for 5 years, yes, it is a sausage factory, but generally thats because #1, its who applies for the jobs and #2, its who is qualified.

No worries though, since MS is trying to make it up by employing nothing but contractors from India and then shipping them out when they are done. No need for those pesky retirement plans. Damn the office started to smell BAD before I left... and that was before Satya Nadella took over.

You know what really needs some diversity? The NBA. They don't call it the "N" BA for nothing.

You mean like the "N" HL? I always find it interesting that people bring up pro sports in these conversations when leagues started out about as bright white as could be, and some like the NHL and NASCAR which are still mostly that way.

Guess what, buddy, it wasn't affirmative action that changed that. It was hard work and results. :p

If everyone in this country had been free to benefit from their hard work and results without the need for something like the 13th Amendment and Civil Rights Act we probably wouldn't be having this conversation.
