Silverstone SX500-LG 500W Gold SFX-L

Can we buy this in the US yet? And is it worth it to get over the SX600-G? How much quieter is it?
 
My "Backup" for the Ncase M1v3, if the Silverstone SX-500LG (SFX-L) unit is a bust, is the Corsair CX500M ATX supply.
Not a solution for high wattage graphics cards, but I am not a "game enthusist".

This unit is 150mm long, uses a 120mm fan, and works well (and quiet) in my small mATX case (HP Panther case).
Not a bad baseline product for Silverstone to compare their SFX-L design's performance.

It's 150mm wide, that's standard for ATX PSU. The length is 140mm and so it's a fair choice for the M1. Although you might prefer the CX430 for being entirely non-modular.

That is an option.
Modular has the advantage of eliminating and customing cable lengths, but clearances have to be watched.

I spent considerable time, 2 years ago, researching the limitations of the HP "Panther" (a000 series) mATX case.
It was HP's attempt to make a very small mATX tower style case.
Smaller components, 15 years later, make this a desirable size today.

The clearance of the ATX power supply (and cables) to the back of the CD/DVD drive bay,
was always a physical consideration (140mm to maximum of 150mm length).
Not unlike the ongoing Ncase M1 discussions.

The Corsair CX500(M) was highest wattage (and reasonable) power supply available in early 2013, when I started the build.
I finished the HP a300y case (Panther, mATX) build earlier this summer.
I acquired the last production run of the Intel DH87RL "Round Lake" mATX motherboard.
I had to wait for availability of the later H87 PCH stepping C2 builds (2Q 2014), before Intel stopped their Desktop board division. :-(

I meant that the cx500 has modular sockets coming out where the gpu ends.

Also shortening non-modular cables is a simple investment in a crimping tool and a handful of MiniFitJr pins. I've done this on my M1v1 build with the ST30SF power supply.

Looks like a v3 PSU bracket will be a must in the M1 with a video card with a backplate.

So, it will push the video card downwards:

I guess it wont harm the videocard too much if it is skewed a couple of millimeters lower (it's not sitting in the PCI Ex slot firmly, it bends, etc).

I have to say that there is a very serious danger awaiting those who fold those power cables like that:
If you somehow dislodge the wire head a little from the power cable's plug, it may end-up having bad connection to the PSU receptacle, which would in turn cause overheating of the wire, and melt-down of the plug/receptacle. If you're lucky, it will stop there and won't harm your components due to voltage spike.

Not saying that it will happen, but it's very easy to accidentally do this.
 
How would I go about getting a V3 PSU bracket?

I'm assuming they'll go up on the website after people start getting their V3's?

Unfortunately we only ordered 30 V3 SFX brackets, and they're sold out. LL has ended the current production of M1 parts, so ordering additional SFX brackets requires a 1000 MOQ :/ So it's unlikely we'll be offering them again until there's another M1 production run.

It can be tricky trying to estimate demand, because you don't want to get stuck with a lot of excess inventory if you don't have a good place to store it. But we clearly underestimated demand for the bracket, and I apologize for that.

That sucks. Would've figured way more than 30 v1 and v2 buyers would be planning to buy the SX500-LG and would have needed the new bracket (I don't need one atm, but was planning on buying one just to have in case I change things up later on).

I'm sure demand will jump, once the PSU actually starts shipping.. unfortunately, it still won't be anywhere near MOQ.

Do you think one can be able to make a v1 bracket into a v3 bracket using some tools, hands and head?

Cutting the flange away for the cable is easy enough, but moving it up 2mm is more problematic. There are five screw holes where the bracket attaches to the chassis, and just moving them 2mm isn't enough to clear the original holes. You'd have to drill, tap, and countersink all new holes in the bracket and the chassis that are offset from the old ones. The bracket might have to be trimmed in a few areas, as well.
 
BTW, just had an interesting conversation with Corsair about the C6/C7 modes with Hazwell processors and their "NON-Compliant" power supplies (CX-series, but not stated on web site)

Turn Off the C6/C7 function in BIOS.
Off course not all mobo mfg./ BIOS designs -- Provide that Level of customization.
When I asked for "an offical statement", Support ShutUp (closed issue).
 
End of January in Europe (Germany) is the last I heard. I'm guessing early February availability in Sweden.

Haha, I might go ahead and get the v550. My main pc is in a node 304 that can still take an ATX sized PSU. The old BeQuiet SFX I am still using is lost in this case and makes too much noise.

If I get a smaller case next year then I will try the SFX-L

From what I can tell, it's the Inno 3D herculez, which is just 1mm shorter than the reference cards at 266mm, but it looks like its cooler is a bit higher than the two PCIe brackets (also it looks abysmal):

Then of course we have the reference blower-type cards and the EVGA (Superclocked) ACX 2.0 cards at 267mm:

I would prefer those as they are all perfectly adhering to the PCIe physical specifications.

And then there's also the Zotac AMP! Omega at 268mm with a quite large cooler:

The reason I'm including this is that the cooler is wider than it should be, but the PCIe power connectors stayed at the same position, so it only occupies the space you would anyway need for the power cables to bend.

Is it possible to have a another source for more brackets? Would it be something I could have a local shop make? I still haven't built my V1 yet (T_T), but wanted to use this PSU. Hell, if I had a flat template I could make it with my dad's help I think. I believe he has taps.

I had a look of the inside of my SilverStone SX500-LG and found out that the capacitors are mostly from TEAPO, instead of the NCCs in the HighPower's version. The main capacitor is still rubycon though. I was hoping SilverStone would use the same capacitors as the HighPower's, but sadly it was not the case.

New to the forum but have been lurking for the last few months, building a new M1 and was really hoping for a top notch PSU for it. Is there anyway to get the High Power version with the good caps in the US? Im kind of disappointed they didnt use the same ones in the Silverstone one.. :(
 
It would be nice to see Superflower and Seasonic come up with their SFX designs and give it to others like Corsair, Antec, XFX, and Evga. I feel that the SFF market is gaining traction and would be gaining much more faster if there were more companies making SFX power supplies.
 
It's a bit chicken and egg - you need the demand to be visibly larger to tempt the volume manufacturers, and we need better products to increase the user base.

Best option is to write direct to the manufacturers asking for it - if enough of us do that any enlightened manufacturer is going to sit up and take note.
