Philips BDM4065UC - 40" 4K 60Hz monitor thread

2.) The PWM frequency on the S27A950D is 180hz

Thank you for posting that. I learned something today. I was hesitant about the Philips due to all of this talk about PWM despite it sounding great in all other aspects except for the stand, and yet I didn't realize that I had used an S27A950D for nearly two years prior to my current LG 34" without a single issue...and its PWM frequency is even lower than the so-called "horrible" 240hz of the Philips.

Not worried about it anymore. I'm not saying that it's not an issue for anyone else, or that the use of PWM in this monitor is a good thing, but I for one am not going to be put off by it. Let's put it this way: if this monitor does eventually see a North American release and there is no better alternative at this size, it's a sure buy for me.

Thanks everyone for the additional information, both good and otherwise, on this monitor during the past few pages. It has definitely helped me. Just a shame that the discussion has to get so intense sometimes...after all, at the end of the day it's only a freaking piece of electronics! Who cares if someone else doesn't like it and you do, or vice versa.

By the way, the reviewer said he had a 32" 4K display before and he now feels he simply can't go back, so it's not like he went from a 1080p TN panel or whatever. There is a substantial difference even from a 32" 4K panel.

That's precisely why I'm holding out and hoping for a U.S. release soon. I was extremely tempted to get the BenQ BL3201PH when I saw one in stock at Amazon earlier this evening...but I feel like however impressive it would be, the 40" would be that much more impressive. I don't care if someone wants to label me because I prefer the larger size at the expense of PWM and other technical details that I may never notice. I am extremely fond of the VA panel in my BL3200PT, and apparently I can't tell the difference between a monitor that uses PWM and one that doesn't, so the thought of having a huge 4K monitor with better-than-IPS blacks and contrast really appeals to me. To me, the size isn't about "look what I can show off to my friends when they come over." It's because of the increased immersion that I get from a large screen, which is an important aspect of the gaming hobby that I enjoy, and also because I'm 34 and these eyes aren't getting any younger. I just think I'd prefer to view 4K content on a 40" vs. a 32" which might be a bit too small. I don't want to have to bother with Windows/app scaling.

Maybe I'm just easily impressed and am not as discerning as others. I know NCX and a few others have strong disdain for the wide gamut 30" monitors but I used several of the Dell 30" monitors for years and enjoyed every minute spent with them. I value the opinions and knowledge here, but I'm content to not be as picky as some of you. I'm happier not obsessing over every last technical parameter and just enjoying what I have. If there's something I don't like or I want to try something new, I move on. Simple as that.

The position of the monitor your are showing is adjusted optimal for your eye height level? Or is it the lowest possible with the stand? From my theoretical measurements it seemed the monitor has to be almost touching the desk to ge the right eye level and you still have lit ike 2in/5cm from the desk?

I apologize guys, I really like this forum and thread, but someone had to say this eventually:

Wirk, are you able to contribute with anything else to this thread besides your concerns about bad ergonomics of big height displays?
It was fun the first million times you mentioned it. We got it! You are an ergonomics maniac.
But, believe or not, there are people who sit in a different position and enjoy big height displays without having a broken neck. People are different!

I am only responding to people telling the 40 incher is too big and/or to photos showing the monitor in very unergonomic position. This monitor size is close to the maximum of what can reasonably fit on the desktop and thus ergonomy becomes of essential importance. Ignorance about ergonomy is huge but it was not as critical before as in the present case of 40" monitor. Reminding people about this problem is thus not maniacal but serves common good by indicating we are entering next level of usability issues.

That's certainly subjective as hell... I had my 60 inch on my desk last week playing gauntlet with my friends.

I also occasionally run a 3x39" setup for single player games in surround.... Most people who are dropping 1k on a monitor probably wont mind upgrading their desk from something bigger than whats in your average dorm (although i would argue it would have no problems fitting there as well)

I personally enjoyed wirk's endless rants about curved displays. I think he mentioned "curved" like 20 times in this thread. I'm not exaggerating. It must be more than 15 now. We get it wirk, you really like those curved displays!
You mentioned it as often like a madman. Now, please be quiet ;)

The talk about ergonomic aspects was not about 'occasional' usage. Occasionally you can watch your display staying on your head and that may be even healthy for you. Here the talk is about usage like in a workplace where people stare in their displays endless hours. In such type of usage ergonomy is absolutely critical. 60" is then clearly too big, 3x39" is a different herd related to the curved problem:

I see no reason of hushing the discussion: people do not realize big size flat monitors are very temporary format, before the curved monitors will become norm. One can see this already in the 34" ultrawide. It may even happen that 4K curved monitors will be announced within next couple of weeks - though you may not wish this as your post will then land in the annals of curiosities :D.

just a comment on ERGONOMICS and large flat displays:
maybe you are right - but maybe you are not.
In lots of fields of ergonomics one is moving from
keeping the best position for e.g. your back all day long
to having as much as possible positions to support as many movement as possible.
Just to keep you muscles and ligaments working and healthy.
If they do not move they degenerate.

You can see this e.g. for ergonomic chair design: there are more and more chairs out their with none static fixed elements like seating or backrest.

When having a curved monitor one tries to keep the best position: for eyes and neck
- but one prevent movement.

If you have a large flat screen you must move your eyes and your neck. This must not be that bad as one might think...

besides the ergonomic topic
also one comment on WORK and curved displays

I'm sure there are good places for curved diplays.
But I'm not sure that they are good for all kind of monitor usages especially at work.

When I think of working with things like
- large tables in Microsofts Excel
- technical engineer working with CAD and straight lines
- designing for flat media: websites (on most monitors), magazines
- photo editing
...

I haven't tried it, but I could imagine that this third dimension from bending does not make everything easier and better and with that more efficient on monitor work...

These are valid points. I think the curvature in the available displays is mild, just to eliminate too big viewing angle at edges but not introducing distortions to the picture. First comparisons of 34" flat vs. curved are rather in favor of curved.

Hey can someone test how the monitor works using 2 inputs like DVI/HDMI + HDMI in tiled mode using Picture-by Picture? Is 4k @ 60 hz possible?
Thanks

Is there matte alternative to this display announced/on the market or is only 4k 60hz 39"+ display with reasonable price this one?

Seiki is supposed to be working on one @ 39" IIRC.

Seiki Pro 4K displays are designed to deliver the ultimate desktop computing experience for intensive computer graphics, photo and video editing, and programming applications, as well as fast-paced 4K PC gaming at up to 60 frames per second.

Seiki will introduce three displays sizes including a 28- (28U4SEP-G02), 32- (32U4SEP-G02) and 40-inch (40U4SEP-G02) models. Current specification list include:

Vertical Alignment (VA) LED panel technology with 3,840 by 2,160 4K Ultra HD resolution
12-bit color processing and 14-bit gamma mode
HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.3, MHL 3.0, DVI and VGA standards display connections
Picture-by-picture (x4) and daisy chain mode
USB 3.0 hub (1 upstream and 2 downstream)
VESA-compliant adjustable monitor stand with quick release
The Seiki Pro 4K Ultra HD displays will be available in Q1 2015. Suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to product availability.

Can someone give me an edumacation on whether Xbox One or PS4 games can be 'upscaled' to 4K? If so, I might consider getting this gargantuan "monitor" strictly to relieve my consolitis.

Yes, they can very, very easily be upscaled. Each pixel turns into 4, it's about the easiest upscaling you can do at least for 1080p games. 720p not quite so neat, but yes it will scale it.

You won't get any additional detail out of it, though. And there will never be 4k native gaming on either platform. Probably be 2020+ before we see that generation of console.

if select picture format ' 1:1 ' then you get 1080p as real resolution but if select ' Wide Screen' then you get fullscreen. ( its just stretch picture to fit whole screen)

anyone know if there is anywhere I can buy one of these from a US store or Ebay seller?

All of them ship from China, and I don't want to wait 3-4 weeks for delivery or get screwed with customs fees later :(

I'm in the same boat. Just hoping for something at CES (Seiki pricing, Phillips announcing this for the U.S.)

If there isn't anything there then I'll be biting the bullet on this via eBay and I'll let you know how it goes.

If only this monitor was PWM free!!

Are there any similar monitors coming out ~40" 4k that will be PWM free?

CES is 1 week away, there is likely going to be quite a few more announcements for 4k 40" monitors, and most of them should be pwm free, although any monitor that gets announced will still need to be released, be available for purchase and preferably have reviews, but OFC if you are affected by PWM then it's a no brainer you need to wait for that monitor to come out (or go for a smaller one).

Either way at this point I would argue it's a good time to wait a couple of weeks to get an idea of what is coming around the corner.

If you get it sent by EMS/Speedpost it should take at most 2 weeks from my experience (it varies with each country customs OFC),

Totally different question, does the screen comes with a Display port cable ? I will receive the screen in a few days, and I want to know if I need to order a DP cable or not.

Thanks

Did you get your screen yet?

Yep, if anything gets announced at CES(like the ROG did) it will take months before its out.

I don't have the patience so I said screw it and ordered one off Ebay last night for $1299:p

Seller said they would ship out Fed Ex and should be 3-4 days to US, so crossing fingers it doesn't take weeks

I was supposed to have it today, ( tracking package state that the screen is in my city,). It went from china to bangkok in 1 day. then stuck in custom for 3 days. I was actualy surprised how fast EMS is going.
but as 31 december to 2 january are Post office holidays, I ll have to wait till saturday to get it.

Ill let you know! :)

Did you see the other seller that has them for $1199 with free shipping?

If you bought from 'etradekorea' for $1299, they have a "Make Offer" button so I wonder what the minimum they'd take would be...hmm.

I want this so badly but I'm tempted to wait and see what's announced at CES. I understand your lack of patience - it's hard to wait when this thing seems so glorious (PWM aside).

Not sure what they cost originally for folks able to get their hands on them overseas, but if someone could get their hands on them and resell directly on Amazon in the US I feel certain they could mark them up tons and sell them easily with no other options like this one.

I'd be guilty myself of paying a premium to get one directly through Amazon.

Really hoping Phillips releases a US version.

Can anyone recommend a good monitor arm (one that you can attach to a desk) for this monitor? I like the freedom this would give and i want it to hover. Would this be possible with this monitor?

It seems that most of these mounts are for monitors up to 27inch.

I will have a piano-keyboard in front of this monitor. A normal mount would be in the way for me.

I just noticed that $1199  (which was just changed this morning from $1300)

as far as the "make offer" last night I tried $1100 and they countered with $1240 shipped with EMS

I paid the full $1299 and was promised 3-4 express Fed Ex shipping to US, so will see how long it takes.

Gotcha. Well good luck with the transaction and your monitor. Let us know how it goes! It will be good to see more people get these in their hands and see what they think.

thinking about using this cheap $33 Monitor arm like this-
http://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Ti...F8&qid=1420066558&sr=1-2&keywords=monitor+arm

want it to sit flush on the desk like this one-

hopefully that arm is strong enough(it says up to 33lbs so should be ok) just don't know if any of those arms have the height clearance, since there aren't really any 40" inch monitors out there to test.

Will that work? The Philips has VESA 200x200, the arm supports "50/75/100".

there are plates that adjust from 100 to 200, in fact as far as I know (could be wrong don't have the monitor), the monitor comes with such a plate (in grey I think). Either way if one is buying from amazon it shouldn't be a problem to replace it, in case it isn't fit for the purpose.

For those that are in the US and want to order it, taobao will probably be significantly cheaper than ebay, considering that you can easily find reputable sellers selling such item for 650$ (no P&P), even if the EMS cost was 350$ (no idea how much P&P is) it would still make it significantly cheaper.

I found a Taobao agent-http://www.yoybuy.com/en/

that would sell one for $700 but with shipping+fees it came out to about $1060.00

With the difference being only couple hundred dollars ill go Ebay since its covered from getting screwed/broken/returns, etc..

I did it! Just bought the one from china on ebay. I couldn't wait any longer and have been following this thread since it opened and have also been waiting for what seems like an eternity for that one guy to complete the seiki Display Port mod (most likely never going to happen). So as soon as i heard about my bonus at work I figured it was a sign so I bit the bullet. I let you all know how long it takes to ship to Omaha NE.
Happy New Year to me!

So what happens if one needs warranty work here in the states on one of these monitors bought from China?

I ordered mine from Buychina, the screen on taobao was 690 usd, on top of that buy china take 10% and about 110 usd for shipping cost,
So in the end I had the screen for 915.00 $ in total.

Probably add another 50 $ if you live in USA.
