Question: How happy should you be with a display?

I'm really wondering this. I never thought of myself as picky with monitors or TV's.. I used a Samsung 245T (1920x1200 VA panel) for about 7 years until it died last year. I really loved that monitor. I was on a tight budget, so I got myself a replacement.. a cheap Acer G276HL. $170, 27"... cheap. I thought it was okay. I remember the day I got it, I was completely taken back by the difference between that and my 245T.. and hated the Acer. But I grew accustomed to it. At this point, I also was using my old Q6600 8800GTS machine.. so graphics and performance were meh anyway.

Fast forward to this past August. Upgrade my PC and can finally play games on Ultra. I got a second G276HL because I was using a tiny 15" LCD as my secondary. But still wanted something better to play games on.. graphics weren't great.

A few weeks ago, finally have the money to buy a new monitor. I was deciding between an IPS panel.. or going with a 144hz 1ms model. I do about 90% gaming on my PC. All genres. Shooters, MMO's, action, RPG's, racing, everything. Gaming is most important. I do a ton of research and grab an ASUS VG248QE because of reviews. Immediately regretted it when I got it, downsizing from 27" to 24" just was bleah to me. And it bothered me it was a different size to the side 27"s. So, I buy a BenQ XL2720Z on sale for $400. Get it, I love it.. or I think I do. I like it WAY more than the ASUS I returned. Playing BF4 or CS:GO and such is a huge improvement..

But.. the graphics of it leave a lot to be desired to me now. I know there's no perfect display out there for everyone, but damn.. Now I'm looking at 2560x1440 IPS panels, wondering if I should try and return this at some point to try one of them.. but don't want to lose out on re-stocking and shipping again. I do some graphic design work, so I did plan on eventually upgrading one of the Acers to a nice IPS 1440p panel anyway.. I just feel like I'm not going to be happy with anything.

Also having this issue with a TV I just got. I was using my Samsung LN32A650 for all these years, but needed something bigger. Got an LG 50LB5900 for $499 and while the size is fantastic.. the picture quality doesn't feel anywhere near my old LCD.

I know a lot of others have this issue too.. some have been through almost every display out there!

You wont be happy with anything because there is no 1 good display. sorry.

Use Two monitors at once one for surfing graphics work the oither one for gaming. Just switch between them turn off the one you don't use.

It's just bizarre to me because I was so happy with my 245T for YEARS. If it didn't die, I would still be using it. I loved it when I got it, and loved it every day after... Granted, that model had crazy high input lag.. but because my PC was lacking in the first place, I was happy to play a game on low settings and get over 30FPS in.. anything pretty much.

Now that I have this PC.. I want to really take advantage of it, and have everything look great. But it seems like it's a matter of high framerate + low input lag OR awesome looking picture quality. I think I'll stick with the BenQ for most gaming... then eventually get a PB27Q or something like it eventually for graphics, and for certain games I want to look really "pretty".

But geez I miss my 245T... kinda wish I had held onto it and tried to get it fixed or something.

Edit: Oh Comixbooks, as it is, I have four displays hooked up to my PC... Two cheap 27" Acer's on either side of the BenQ, used for having Chrome open, the other for Steam, IM stuff, etc. The 50" TV I use for watching stuff (Movies, Netflix, Twitch, etc) and playing games from my bed. The BenQ in the middle is solely for gaming. So replacing one of the cheap Acer's with an IPS 27" would be awesome. I think that's what I'll end up doing in the future. Best of both worlds haha.

Your happiness is in part ignorance. Now that you have experienced the faster 144hz monitors you wouldn't be happy going back to your 245T. Ignorance is bliss. Each time you step up the game you get more picky. Once you realize all the metrics it becomes near impossible to get what you really want this is what is wrong with LCDs. Just be happy you are dealing with a desktop and not a laptop because then not only do you have to consider the display itself you have to consider the package it comes in and all its features.

Also I didn't see it mentioned but you do have lightboost enabled right?

happy enough bro. You don't live in a third world country ... do you?

It won't make you feel any better to realize that you also could have laid in a second 245T in reserve. New and low-mileage secondhand units were still available until about two years ago, well after it had become apparent that most "advances" in LCD technology were going to be either problematic or a step backward.

LCD is a horrible technology for gaming, but consumers want everything to be thin and retailers love that they can fit 100 of them per pallet.

Display makers don't give a crap about QA either since most people will accept just about anything that forms a color image.

So, good luck. There's a better chance you will own a flying car in your lifetime than see these same old manufactures get off their ass.

Oh trust me, I don't mean this is keeping me up at night or anything, crying about how my monitor isn't 100% perfect. I'm a very grateful person for all that I have. But at the same time, I haven't bought any new stuff since 2008 until this year.. and have just been trying to find something I can be decently happy with, without having TOO many nitpicks with. And it's just weird because I never was picky with displays at all or looking for "bigger and better". But I don't know why I'm being picky now.

I'm not REALLY unhappy, don't get me wrong. I was unhappy with the 24" ASUS though, I'm glad I returned it for the 27" BenQ. But I think I'm just surprised at where displays are in this point in time in quality and such. I've been out of the scene since I got my 245T and built that first PC back in 2008. (Also, I wanted to spend under $500 too, so I know that really limits me into trying to find a display that will make me the happiest I can possibly be with a screen, of course).

I really was just wondering, is this a common thing now for a lot of us? That we get something we think we'll love, and then feel "meh" about it?

But seriously, don't think I'm sitting here going "Oh my God my life sucks, my $400 monitor isn't anything like a $1000 screen is waah!". I just never considered myself picky in the past, but for some reason now.. it seems there's so many choices and it's an "either or" situation, you know?

Yup! I use that Blur Busters Strobe Utility. It makes a huge difference, though of course it makes the screen WAAAY darker, which I already expected and knew. You know, it's exactly what it should be.. FPS are amazing to play now on here, make a huge difference, but an MMO like Final Fantasy XIV, doesn't look as "pretty" as it could. I did pick the faster monitor, knowing full well that it would be "fast" and not as "pretty". It still looks good though, it definitely looks better than the cheap Acer's for sure.

For some reason I've been having a strange time adjusting from LCD to LED monitors and TV's and I'm not even sure why. Or, again, it might be the difference from going from an $800 monitor to a $400 monitor, and a $1000 TV to a $500 TV. Even though they're years apart, I definitely see the difference between my old TV and my new one.

Unfortunately there is no perfect monitor out there.

But as long as every new purchase is a definite upgrade over the previous purchase in some way I'm fine with it even if it's not perfect. I certainly try to ensure every new purchase is a clear upgrade.

Given that technology and price keep improving (even if it's a bit slow), if a new purchase is not clearly better, it's better to return it.

That makes a lot of sense. My monitor is a clear upgrade to my Acer's, for sure. The image itself.. is hard to decide for sure if it's better or worse than the 245T. If it still worked and I could put them side to side. I did notice the slight difference going from a 1920x1200 res monitor for all those years, to a 1080 one. I am still happy enough with it.

The TV though... I don't know. 32" really was way too small for a TV for me and my needs. 50" is incredibly better in my room, both for gaming on PC, console, and actually watching movies and shows. But the image quality seems subpar to the old. But again.. I couldn't afford to drop $1000 on a new one this time, unfortunately, so I took what I could get. I've never seen a 4k TV in person, but I can only imagine how amazing the things must look. It was either spend ALL the money on one monitor or one TV ,or upgrade both the TV and monitor. I opted to upgrade both, THAT I don't regret.

It's just funny, I don't get buyer's remorse with anything really. Peripherals, furniture, consoles, games. Never had buyer's remorse with my old displays.. but now it seems to be an issue. I think reading through this entire subforum has made me want more and more, honestly haha.

You get what you pay for.

Good 50" TV will cost close to 1000$ if you want top quality

Also 27" 170$ display is most likely bottom of the barrel TN

Now Asus and Benq you have are 144 Hz panels those excel at motion clarity but sacrafice everything else for it so they are specialised displays.

Your Samsung was high quality top of line display using VA panel. You would probably be much happier with Asus VN279Q or Benq 2760HS modern MVA+ panels (bunch of other companies also use this panel)

Yeah the difference gaming on the XL2720Z is just.. wow. I love it, I really do. But yeah, I realize just how much I sacrificed everything else for that. I think I learned that in the future, I'm going to stick to waiting longer to get something if I can, if I can afford to drop more money on it. I got 6 years out of the 245T, and the samsung LCD TV I had, and they aged very well (Aside from the monitor dying lol). When I buy things, I plan to use them until they die.. so I really should have just waited til I could drop more money to invest in higher quality displays.

I guess that's the technology circle, though. Just going to probably keep the BenQ for most gaming, eventually grab a nicer IPS or VA panel with better image and color for certain games and graphic stuff. Also, man the viewing angle on this really is pretty bad.. I never really dealt with bad viewing angles, that I noticed, but yikes. Granted, I had read about that in reviews as well, so I kinda expected that.

I have an ASUS PA248Q 24" 1920x1200 monitor. It wasn't until too late that I noticed one of the pixels on my screen (near the center) is .. not sure what you call it -- it isn't a dead pixel -- but the pixel isn't the full width of a pixel. It's as though the pixel got smooshed a little. I can't feel any scratches on the screen ... :(

Back when I got this monitor, it was a huge step up for me from boat anchor CRT. I did have a 22" 1650x1080 for a very short time years prior, then was cash strapped and needed some other hardware more than the monitor and sold it. I don't do as much with gaming any more, and will do more with movies, Photoshop, Excel, and producitivity. 24" seems very small to me, and I think that every time I watch a movie. :(

I have an HP ZR2740w v2 and I think it's exceptional. It has the specs and performance I want, Windows looks 'great' at the stock DPI, and the cost was reasonable. To me, it's "perfect." So there.

Yeah I was always happy with my 24" monitor... until I got a 27"... then when I tried to revert back down to a 24" a few weeks ago, I was like nope. My 245T actually always had one stuck pixel on it. I noticed it when I first got it.. but it never bothered me too much.. though sometimes I would notice it because it was near the center of the screen haha. But I'm not sure why I never bothered to try to exchange it when I got it

That's awesome SuperSubZero. I actually like hearing people's stories about how much they found the perfect monitor for them ;) I feel like I've seen a few people on the forum generally say their Catleap, Crossover and ultra-wide screens are pretty much "perfect" for them.

And I'm seriously not picky at all, I never return anything ever. I have kept things I've bought that I didn't even really end up liking haha. So this pickiness over a damn display is strange and new to me.

I know how you feel. My VA panel died and I replaced it with a good korean IPS. It's great but it's definitely a side-grade. Better colors and response, but worse black levels and glow.

With TVs, I'm glad I bought a good Panasonic plasma when I did. We aren't going to see anything better, or even as good for quite some time.

I bought the LG 25" 21:9 monitor for my garage setup and I am actually quite pleased with it.
It has slight IPS glow in the top left and bottom right but I don't notice it when using the monitor.
It was only $229 when I bought it 2 weeks ago.

Everyone is different when it comes to satisfaction with their displays. Some people out there will simply never be happy no matter what they buy. If it's a 3440x1440 21:9 Ultrawide then they'll complain about 60hz, if it's one of the 144hz gaming monitors then they complain about it being TN. If it's a 120hz overclocked korean IPS monitor then the complaint is about no motion blur reduction on it. VA panels get complaints about black crush and gamma shift, and the list goes on and on...

For me personally I just get whatever I can that does the job for the lowest price. When it came to gaming I picked up the VG248QE because it was the best bargain compared to what BenQ was pricing their monitors at the time. Yes this monitor gets crap tons of hate due to poor image quality especially when in lightboost, but the thing is I didn't buy this for good image quality in the first place. I bought it because I wanted the CRT like motion clarity at the lowest price possible and I've been satisfied with this monitor for 2 years now. Do the BenQ monitors have better picture? Yeah probably a little bit but I'm not going to pay $300+ for a small upgrade at this point.

i used to be kinda happy with my dematte'd vg248qe+gsync

then i used a good crt for a month

then i tried my vg248qe again

mind=blown
1. holy fuck viewing angles. i was used to them before but switching back... it was disgusting
2. blacks are purple... even though my crt's ansi contrast is much worse, blacks look blacker because they don't have any tint.
3. and strangely, even though text is supposed to be sharper on lcd, i found text to be just as sharp, and more readable, on my crt. it looks smoother but somehow without blurriness.

I went from ViewSonic IPS 27" 1080p (the model eludes me, since that monitor wasn't mine) to Asus RoG Swift, it was a total shift of specs and technology:

IPS to TN, 1080p to 1440p, 60hz to 120/144hz & G-sync, the difference between the monitors are quite large.

First, before I had the ViewSonic screen, I had a Samsung TN screen which was several years old, when I did the switch, I actually did not notice the color difference (the screen size took up most of my attention), but just before I made the decision to buy Swift, I put the two monitors side by side, the color difference was HUGE. So it shook my desire to buy the Swift for a little while. After reading reviews on Swift however, I bought it. I figured that most reviews agree colors are good, and most of the drawbacks I can either deal with or it doesn't apply to me.

I don't think I was more stunned at buying the monitor than anything else in my life (in a good way), though I'd say its the combination of decent colors, 1440p (higher pixel density), 144hz and G-sync/ULMB that gave me the wow factor.

I am happy enough that, if Swift ever releases a team neutral version (either no G or free sync, or has both) with everything else being equal, I would not hesitate bite it again. I think this is my benchmark for 'happy enough' with a monitor: If you could do it all over again, would you?

Oh I definitely don't have hate for the VG248QE, honestly it looked fine. The only reason I returned it.. was because it was bothering me so badly that the VG24 in the center was a 24", and my side monitors were 27". I didn't think it would bug me.. but the size difference annoyed me so much. So it was between the BenQ and the VG27 instead.. but I went with BenQ to see what all the fuss was about with their gaming monitors. But the VG248QE looked pretty good when I used it for that week... and A LOT cheaper than the BenQ.

This bites. The more I use my BenQ.. The more I realize I'm not that happy with it. The light bleeding around the edges is unreal.. It's really bad. The viewing angle is atrocious. My cheap Acers have better video angles and less light bleeding. I don't know if I should go through the process of buying a new monitor, again, and returning this one back to amazon, again. I am thinking I really would be happier with an IPS or VA... Time to do research on a good one to try. Any suggestions? I need to stay under $500 too, most importantly. Hm... Back to the drawing board.

seeing that you came from a 245T. I'm in the same boat, im used to wide gamut monitors with higher LUT. I perfer to not use TN panels because of that and i trade input lag/120hz for colors/visuals.

I ended up buying an AOC q2770Pqu. I'm nervous about liking it more or not It should be here on Monday. My 245T was just so "pretty".. even though its input lag was supposedly really bad. But I didn't even notice really.

Originally when looking for a new primary monitor, I wanted something that was 1440p. But then I did a lot of research on monitors for gaming.. and all of the 144hz/1ms input lag ones came up. Thought that would be best. I seriously do A LOT of gaming.. I thought I considered myself "hardcore", and those were the monitors people steered hardcore gamers too. However, I don't play anything competitively. Maybe that's what hardcore gamer means now? Lol. Someone who plays something fast and competitive?

I play everything.. but far from competitive.

Still going to see if I can swing keeping them both, if I like the AOC. Best of both worlds.

What were the things you liked and disliked in each monitor/TV? What makes the Acer worse than the old Samsung? And what about fixing that Samsung? It could be just something basic like a bad power supply capacitor or two.

Anyway, I completely sympathize. LCD technology is just not a very good technology. I'll take a good CRT over any LCD, but they don't make them anymore, and the screen ratio and resolution are also no longer suitable. Also, in large TV sizes CRT becomes a problem due to power consumption and physical size.

Another part of the problem with "good" LCDs is that these things aren't cheap. Getting a $1000+ TV and the first thing I think after the disappointing initial trial run is "when will technology improve so that I could get rid of this piece of junk". This is not the response I want to have in day 1 after buying an expensive item.

I recently got a Sony TV, with a VA panel, that's supposed to be as good as it gets without FALD backlighting. The TV sucks. Bad uniformity in all parameters, bad viewing angles, bad blacks. Well, maybe the blacks aren't that bad in the dead center of the screen, but the limited viewing angles mean that most of the screen is brighter, and non-uniform at that.

I wonder if IPS would be better in this regard. Worse blacks but more consistency might win.

3. and strangely, even though text is supposed to be sharper on lcd, i found text to be just as sharp, and more readable, on my crt. it looks smoother but somehow without blurriness.

I think it has to do with the visible black grid on LCDs. Black lines around the pixels. I hate it. No such problem on CRTs.

for $229, this 25" LG ultrawide is my favorite screen. I am very happy with this purchase.
it looks odd when you first use it since it is short and wide but after a little while you get used to it and it makes 16:9 screens look so square.

Just gonna sum it up (this is only my thoughts), it comes down to pretty colors (you know what I'm talking about with your 245T, or a smooth picture, (120hz, 1ms, all that jazz), and pick one.

if you still can't decide, take a look at the NEC PA322UHD-BK. I'm not saying buy that one, just know that 1080p 120hz AH-IPS wide gamut might be coming soon.

Every display on the planet right now sucks, and everyone should be outraged. It's unacceptable how much technology has advanced to make everything else better and yet displays still completely stink.

And don't recommend CRTs, because they suck too for different reasons. There simply are no good displays, and it's ridiculous.

I'm extremely satisfied with my FW900.

It's a privilege to use it on a daily basis - the sheer beauty of the picture quality makes viewing images and video a real pleasure. And it goes without saying that it's the ultimate gaming monitor.

The frustration continues.. but not even because of the display itself. But because of UPS delivering the wrong package to the wrong house for the 6th time this month. That was at 9AM... and no one has returned it yet... so I hope they enjoy their $500 monitor! Ugh....

But yeah, I definitely miss the prettier colors with my 245T. Although now I really don't think I could downsize back down to a 24" screen again.. that's why I returned the VG248QE in the first place and got the XL2720Z. I really hope I like the AOC.... if I ever get it delivered...

UPS is simply fucking awful. Avoid at all costs.

See, we were lucky. For ten years we've had this AWESOME driver. He's real chill, and just amazing. But for the last ~two months.. he hasn't been around. And we've done a lot of buying the last two months. TV's, monitors, tablets, etc.. Fedex and USPS haven't delivered a single thing wrong.

Two nights ago they delivered something to our neighbors, I had to go over and get it. So I contacted UPS and told them this was the fifth time. They delivered a power saw to the wrong house two weeks ago. A week ago they delivered something to our house meant for the next street over, and something to THEIR house that was for OUR house.. so we literally had to trade packages for each other. The numbers on our houses are clear and lit up.. other shippers have no issue.

And I don't live in a great neighborhood. Whoever got this, is going to keep it. It was delivered at 9AM this morning.. it's 6PM now.. I don't think they're bringing it to us, sigh. The return window on the BenQ is getting smaller and smaller.. that's why I paid for expedited shipping on the AOC.

Thing is, I know what house it probably was, and they're dumb enough to take the monitor and then throw the box out in front of the house. So I'm gonna keep an eye on that.

depends on the driver, my fedex driver is really bad and i've had the same ups driver for 5 years and I haven't lost a UPS package

Where did you buy the monitor from, I hope you don't lose money from this.

Bought from Newegg.. Sure enough, it's been a day and a half, no one returned the monitor. Freaking scumbags, man. It turns my stomach that some scumbag out there gets a free $500 monitor, that I spent my own money on.. wow. I already talked to Newegg, they're initiating the whole replacement thing, and opening a case with UPS.

What's even more awesome, is that the laptop my Dad ordered from Amazon will be here this week.... shipped UPS. Hope the neighbors also enjoy their new laptop.

I went from 17" CRT > 21 CRT > 20" TN > 24" IPS > 27" IPS 1440p
I would never go back, not even if it has 0ms input lag, perfect backlight and 100% AdobeRGB.

I use my U2713HM for gaming mostly (MMOs) and I would definitely buy a second one, if it's manufactured after AUG 2013.

Size, pixel density, color gamut. Damn those colors looks awesome... after almost a year and I'm still impressed every time I get home and turn it on.

I can't wait to try the 1440p IPS panel... If I ever get it. It's been Four days and no one returned the monitor :/ Scumbags. I have no idea how long the replacement and claim process with Newegg is supposed to take.. but I want that damn monitor already. Still nauseates me that some douche out there is taking advantage of my $400+ of my own money on something they didn't pay for.. bleah.

I'm sure that once I get it, I'll prefer it over the XL2720Z. I need my games to look pretty again, as much as I love the higher refresh rate and the low input lag.. I need the prettiness.
