If you have an older garmin nuvi without lifetime maps, this purchase updates it to lifetime maps for $39.99. Not a bad deal vs buying a new gps for $70+, especially if you like your current gps.

I've used OSM before & generally find commercial map solutions better. YMMV of course. In any case, I appreciate having the option. Thanks for the link.
 
Seems like a rip off to me. I paid only 30 bucks more than that for my last Garmin GPS that included lifetime maps.
 
$30 is $30. I personally would rather have that $30 in my pocket.

You missed the whole point. $40 bucks is a ridiculous amount just for maps. Heck sell your old GPS and get a brand new one that includes lifetime maps. And hardly anything gets updated anyway. Not one single thing has changed since I started using a GPS many years ago. None of the roads that are now dead ends or no longer exist have ever been updated to reflect that going back as for as 10 years. It still cant even find some common addresses I go to every day for years yet google maps can just fine.

Will my gps circa 2010 get me the $30 to $40 I need to buy a new one with lifetime? I kind of doubt it.

With that being said, I've seen improvements when I've updated maps. Have you reported the missing addresses to your GPS manufacturer support?
 
$40 to add lifetime maps to an existing device seems very expensive to me. Considering from what i have seen the difference between lifetime and no lifetime maps is a whopping $20

They are. But they also have obscene prices. For God's sake, $40 is a sale!

I talked directly to Garmin and they say they get their map info from a 3rd party and that was the extent of their concern. Luckily my work day is mostly routine driving now but the GPS has costs me some major grief and aggravation in the past. Again google maps does not have typically have issues like that.
 
I've had good maps with google. I havne't had good navigation with them. They also don't work when there isn't a cellular signal.

Also: I wouldn't buy a new gps & then try to add this. My wife was thinking of spending $70-$100 to replace her gps with something newer to get lifetime maps, but this is a much cheaper option.

But when you think about it you can get a newer better device with a nice fresh warranty AND lifetime maps for $30 more so my question is, why?

But i guess if you where not smart enough to buy a lifetime maps version to begin with you deserve to piss money down the drain.

Without lifetime maps a GPS is worthless as fast as thi9ngs change out there.

:rolleyes: Lifetime maps weren't always available for a small difference over non-lifetime versions.

I don't NEED a new device with fresh warranty for $30 more. The current device works fine.
I think you are the one who is asking me to piss money down the drain by buying new hardware for no real reason. Good try though!

What? Been this way for many many years now.

Always been that way for the Nuvi line which this deal is for so... yeah...

And my wife's nuvi (release date 2008) was released before they offered lifetime maps.

So "yeah..." you are wrong.

You could sell your old device for $20 to $40, so at most it's $10 down the drain. Would you not do that for better hardware (faster loading, bigger screen, etc.)?

No reason to do that really. The GPS works fine. This also has bluetooth calling which I doubt the $70 units have. Also, not sure if I could find a buyer at $20-$40....
 
Bottom line its a very poor value. $40 is nearly half the cost of a brand spanking new device WITH lifetime maps already included. But carry on and think you are getting a deal i guess. The sad part is the flipping reguklar price is MORE then a new device...
 
I think at this point anyone who is still using a GPS is set in their ways no point in arguing about it. If this is the cheapest you can get map updates for then its a deal for those who need it.

As others have mentioned, my nuvi works where google maps gives up or can't connect. I don't know why. The nuvi 660 was terrific when it was released, and it still works great. BTW, the link still leads me to the $89 update, so no thanks.
 
I had a 650, but anyhow in case you don't know you can save google maps and other GPS apps data for offline use in case you are not getting a data connection. Also with waze you can see where the cops are. The whole time I was using it though the maps were anemic IMO interface was clumsy and slow. And now days I see most of what GPS makers doing as similar tactics to what land line phone providers do to older customers, just charging them too much and making them fear getting rid of it. I don't think any of the GPS makers do anything in the way of investing in maps or data for the future.

The NORMAL price is a terrible value I agree with you 100%. For $90 buy a new gps. The fact that $40 is HALF of a new gps is why I posted this deal in the first place. If you want to pay double+ for the same functionality, by all means, knock yourself out. I posted this deal KNOWING a new gps with bluetooth calling couldn't be had for $40 and that it would be useful to someone.

With most of the responses I've received, I'm wondering why I bothered to post it at all.
