X-box one controller went though 200 prototypes

You have to love how so-called professionals scam the own companies they work for. It does not fucking take 35 people 3 years to improve a product that wasn't broken and largely well-received.

Its functionality is great, but they seriously fucked up the ergonomics... I have to constantly stretch my fingers every 10-15 minutes, lest my fingers get stuck . I'd pay $60 if I could get a controller with the case of the 360 controller using the ONE controller's internals and Dpad.

I can tell the effort paid off as the XB1 controller somehow managed to improve on the X360 controller which I thought was just perfect. I raved about how amazing the X360 controller was when I got mine on 11/22/2005, but this is even more amazing when it comes to driving and shooting games. There is far less fatigue and I feel like the positioning of everything is more comfortable. By the same token, I absolutely cannot get used to the controller on the PS3 or PS4 as it just feels weird. Even back during the PS2 days, I could never get comfortable as my hands would always cramp up.

It looks similar, but damn it is so much better than the 360 pad, which was already THE best controller for PC (and without wireless drivers for the Bone pad, still is).

Yes it does. If something is already great, it is difficult to make it better.

It has considerably better ergonomics than the PS4 controller does. My fingers cramp up much faster gripping and squeezing the PS4's handles and triggers than they do the XB1's because the controller fills up your hand better so that you don't put as much pressure on your finger joints when you grip down on it tight and the triggers on the XB1 controller are 10x better than those cheap pieces of plastic on a tiny spring the PS4 has which are seriously no better than the snap on ones you could buy for the PS3. Every time I buy a new PS4 controller it feels pretty good for a week or two and then everything just seems to start squeaking and sticking to go along with the rubber wear on the analogs.

My only complaint is that mine has developed the right stick drift when centered.

This seems way to common I've had three replaced for left stick drift and I have 5 controllers between two systems so I can rotate them and we are not rough with them.

Everybody is different. I found the 360 superior in ergonomics compared to the Xbox one. But the PS4 feels the best for me in hand.

That is how I was when I first got my xbox one. But after a few weeks, I was used to it. I actually like xbox one controller now more then the xbox 360 controller.

xbox one controller is nice -- my fave touch is the textures sick controls... makes it easy to have a super fine touch on it.

I will say though there's something "off" about the ergonomics of it. When I hold the controller the normal way after 20 or 30 min parts of my hands start to go to sleep. This never happened with the Xbox 360 controller which (ergo wise) was perfect for me.

Is it part of the warranty? If so I wonder if I can take it to the MS store for a replacement

I prefer the one controller to the 360, and I have pretty big hands.

The analog sticks are MUCH improved. On the 360 controller the sticks weren't very smooth and would get notchy very fast. The triggers also weren't that smooth.

On the one controller they fixed both these problems and the sticks in particular have a wonderful smooth feel. I also like the new textured material on them.

Oh, and the shoulder buttons were fixed as well. On the 360 the shoulder buttons were very shitty and would stop working after a while.

And as a bonus it has micro usb now so it works on PC. No longer need to buy a wired version.

The plastic that supported the switch for the shoulder buttons was a common fail point in the 360 controller. That and the poor quality pots on all the analogue components are the only issues I had. It seems like the pots started to go after just a year of constant gaming.

Like I said, functionally the ONE controller is fabulous. But the ergonomics really force your hands into an unnatural position. Time will tell about the quality of the pots.

Maybe because of my stubby fingers, the X360 and now XB1 controllers are the most ergonomic controllers I have ever used. It simply feels just right. My launch day X360 controller is still working perfectly since 11/22/2005. It has seen a tremendous amount of use.

Riddle me this. Why don't console companies ever release a version of their controllers where the d-pad position is switched with the analog stick.

Well they nailed it. Its great to hear they were willing to experiment so much. Having a new and better controller (and the Xbox One is minus the shoulder buttons) is absolutely a MUST for a new generation of console. It can absolutely make or break it in fact.

I fucking still to this very day DESPISE the Dual Shock 3. Its too light , its too flimsy and its too uncomfortable. The analog sticks are too close together (the DS4 however is actually my favorite of the new console gen) and its a just something I've always disliked about the PS3. I'm so happy I can use a bluetooth USB adapter for the PS3 and use my Wii U Pro controller (second best I think of the next gen) as its made my backlog of PS3 games doable.

I guess the two most important things to nail down for next gen consoles are graphics capability and controller functionality/comfort. Everything else is really just up for grabs.

They should have stuck much more closely with the Xbox 360 design in my opinion. To me the sticks are too loose, the bumpers feel unsatisfying to press, and the less 'round' design doesn't sit as nicely as the 360's perfectly round shape. It's still a good controller, but sits behind the 360 and DS4.

I really dislike the xbone controller. I have little girl hands and this thing is overall too small. The sticks are oriented too close together. The triggers are squishy, short travel, lame.

The sticks are actually further apart than the 360. Not sure why you feel that way. The controller is also "fatter" than the 360 so it being too small is a complaint I have rarely heard.

Dude you got some weird hands :D

No offense.

Ledbetter said that the company learned from previous mistakes. "An example of something we got wrong was the first Xbox controller. It worked, but it wasn't the right size for people."

Duke 5eva

Duke 5eva

Ha, yeah, the Duke was one of my favourites. It was like holding onto a large bosom and I personally liked how the face buttons were pretty close together (and their odd shape). It felt easier to input follow up commands using them.

I'm feeling motivated to dig through my box of gaming peripherals and hunting the controller down just to hold it for a moment or two.

i liked that i could put my thumb right in the middle of all the buttons and not really move my thumb around everywhere to push each button, less cramping yo

The damn duke has been the only controller that felt about the right size for my hands as well. I can't do PS simply I fell like I have to pinch the damn controller to hold it.

For me, its how the analog sticks feel in the hand. the 360 felt good, the Xbone feels "alright". The DS4 is the best for me this generation. The PS3 is just bad in comparison if you ever go back to that, lol.

forgot to mention, GameCube controller is #1 ever, then duke

What do you mean? The DS4 is switched from the XBoxOne.

Do you mean an option from both Sony and Microsoft to buy a controller that is switched?

If so I would endorse this idea.

I have bigger hands, and the spacing does feel overall better. My problem is the angle of the grips is too acute. The only reason I prefer the DS4 is because I can still be effective with a loose grip in my natural resting position for my wrists and hands. The ONE controller doesn't allow for this freedom.

Nice to see another Gamecube controller fan ;). It's probably also my favorite of all time. The shape and layout was just very intuitive, in my opinion.

Yar, the Gamecube controller was intuitive. The face buttons were easily distinguishable by touch and those dual analog shoulders felt terrific. Its design definitely still holds up. It's too bad Nintendo didn't evolve their Wii U Pro pad (which imo is a tweaked 360 controller) from the Gamecube controller. Throw on a larger d-pad, add another row of shoulder buttons, replace the c-stick with a standard analog pad - it would've been great.

I was largely an Xbox 360 user in the last generation. I hated the feel of the DualShock 3 and absolutely loved the X360 controller. It just felt compact and easy to reach all the buttons. The triggers were nice and the bumpers good and clicky, only issue was the d-pad which I felt was pretty much rectified with the final revision of the 360 controller.

For this generation I felt everything completely switched around. The Xbone controller is clunky and hard to hold, the triggers feel weird and bulbous mostly unnecessary fat was added. The D-Pad was a huge improvement but everything else felt weird to press. The DualShock 4 suddenly became much more comfortable in the hands, the ergonomic triggers and clicky buttons improved the feel for me.

So in my opinion. 360 > DS4 > Xbone > DS3

Or Gamecube > * seriously, clicky triggers? Fucking genius Nintendo, thank you for letting us use them in Smash 4.

I like Xbox One controller, but I don't really like the "angular" edges as much. Plus, even though it being lighter is a bonus, it feels fragile.

In general, I still love the 360 controller. I'll keep using that controller + the wireless dongle until MS drops Windows support for it. Until we see a legit sea change for the way gaming controllers work, I can't really imagine someone making a better pad.
