Official LG Curved Ultrawide 34UC97 thread

.. So I am confused .... Buy or not to buy 34uc97?

If you want a 34" curved ultrawide monitor, I believe it's the only one currently available.

Sounds like it's panning out to be a lot like the 34UM95. Some units are fine and some have QC issues.

The curve is worth the $400 premium to some and not worth it to others.

A lot of mixed feedback so far, so I don't think there's a definitive "buy or don't buy" recommendation. Just depends on how much you want what it offers and your willingness (or not) to wait for Dell's version.

I'm waiting this model for a long time ... I would to spend more money to buy it but I read existing problems about backlight bleem and so keep me very sad.
What about Samsung -S34E790C? It will be a good rival for Dell?

Could anyone here with this awesome monitor post screen shots playing an MMO like WoW, GW2, or SW:ToR. Thanks.

And what's the going price for this beast ? $1200 ?

Here's a flickr album I did real quick of screenshots from various MMO's I can log into at the moment. Games included Star Trek Online, Wildstar Online, Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. I'm running a GTX 770.

The Samsung will likely have much better blacks and shouldn't glow in the corners like the LG and Dell since it's a VA panel instead of IPS. This may come at the expense of slower pixel response times (i.e. slightly more blur in games) so it's a trade-off. I for one am really excited for the Samsung VA variant because even though the LG is beautiful it does suffer from orange IPS glow in the corners and the black levels aren't as deep as a VA panel.

What about Samsung -S34E790C?

Just found a couple pre-order pages in the Scandinavian region with an unconfirmed ETA of Dec.18 for 12,000 DKK / 13,500 NOK (~$2,000 USD). For comparison, the U3477PQU is ~$890 (converted) at the same shops.

Dunno. I really don't expect to see the Dell U3415W and Samsung S34E790C priced any higher than the $1300 the LG 34UC97 is currently going for in the US. Hope these both launch in December and push the prices down a little (which should help drop the prices on the flat ones).

I just picked it up today on a whim. What would you like to know about it? I'll be up for the forseeable future gaming. :]

Do you have bad backlight bleeding ? see some pics on here that have bad backlight bleeding and caused discolouration into orange and green and how is input lag ? Do you feel any lag in game ? i really can't decide if i should wait for Dell or Samsung or go for curved or go for UM95 which its £300 cheaper in UK.

I am using Asus PB278Q and gtx 780ti atm . i want to get 32" ultrawide because if i go for 4k monitor then i need another graphic card but i prefer single graphic card so 32" ultrawide is in a sweet spot.

i read many people on here that suffer from bad backlight bleed so i am worry because i mostly use my monitor at night and in quite a dark room .

I have not noticed any backlight bleed at all. I used to have the 34UM95 and this is leaps and bounds better in terms of overall QC and just outright panel quality.. Blacks seem much deeper to me too.

Thank you ^_^ now i am go toward curved LG then :D

Just placed a order on 34UC97

Does anyone have any thoughts about monitors for PLP setup?
(Portrait - Landscape - Portrait with the 34UC97 as the landscape monitor)

Not for gaming/movies use, I simply want more desktop space. Portrait mode to keep the wide angle down. (I also like working in portrait mode)

I have a PLP setup today, normally I would be frugal and use my old monitors. Then again, I want something new and shiny. They have been with me since 2003 so it is about time IMO.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good monitor model that has a nice fit with 34UC97?
By that I mean physical size match, bezel, PPI, resolution and so on.
Maybe helpful tool/calculator/database that can narrow down the search?

Since the 34" 21:9 is nearly identical height wise to a 27" 16:9, this comparison works.

People have used 15.4" laptop replacement screens, which match vertical resolution (1440) to make a PLP setup.

What are you doing to integrate the Defi gauge? Is that the control unit to the right of it? What's the purpose of the monitor to the right of the wheel? Nice setup btw :)

Bought one from BHP. Minimal back light bleed. Man, this monitor is wide even coming from a 40" LCD TV. Haven't watch any movie but played a lot of the new dragon age...UWS support is still lagging (cut scene/menu/UI is 16:9). Immersion on the other hand is superb.Sound is pretty good for what comes with monitor. Default font/icon at this resolution is extremely small, maybe i got to get used to sitting nearer to screen as with the 40", it's much further away; I do appreciate the sharpness of real PC monitor though.
Let me know if u guys have any question.
Anybody with this monitor knows what is the power LED func for? it's off by default.

From the UC97 manual (LINK)..

Power LED: Turns the power LED on the front of the monitor on or off.
On: The power LED turns on automatically.
Off: The power LED turns off.

I'm guessing it's a feature for us type of folks that find LEDs on our displays somewhat distracting (I have a roll of dark static-cling window tint that I use for particularly bright LEDs) ;)

Not really.

I live in Norway where we have a law that you can return a item up until 14 days no questions asked. (This is only valid for domestic telephone/internet shopping). This means if the unit has any faults I can return it as DOA/faulty like normal or just by the 14 day rule. The 14 day rule is very handy when they try to say things like "this amount of bleeding is normal"

another concern about the curved that do you have to sit in the middle of the screen all the time ? my set up table sometimes might not be possible to sit in the middle of screen . what is your thought on your experience ? Thank you in advance

Hey everyone, i just ordered my free VESA compatible mount from LG, for my 34UC97. I wanted to ask about Desk Mount LCD Arm, any ideas which one to get. Thanks much.

How did you order from LG for free? I'd like one too.

Easy, its on there website. You just need to call LG customer service 800-243-0000 and give them your serial number for the monitor. And they will send you one within 7-10 business days. FREE OF CHARGE.

I wonder if anybody has comparison experience from using both 34" widescreen curved and flat monitors? I understand that curved generally should feel better but are there any negatives/issues comparing to flat?, especially in non-gaming applications???

Thanks a bunch! This is the essence of his impressions:

During photo editing my own view is that I’m not an immediate fan [of curved]. What I found was that the curve tends to mess with my mind and make me think certain photos I am working on are not straight, especially interior photos of buildings or landscape photos. I preferred editing on the non-curved... On the other hand movies and games gave further immersion due to the curve, the way the content seemed to wrap towards me at the ends felt cool.

There is still and interesting issue raising from the above the curve tends to mess with my mind and make me think. It seems this is his pure bias/stereotype/imagination problem only and not that photos are not really not looking straight . Or he really sees some lines not straight .

I think its the way things appear to the eye. If say, one is looking at a straight horizontal line on a curved monitor, due to the curvature of the monitor it may appear as not straight?

There will undoubtedly be some distortion of the picture on a curved screen, since the images are rendered as if they are flat and then 'rolled' into the curve (like printing a picture on a flat piece of paper then rolled up around the sides a bit). Probably not so noticeable when looking at it straight on, but around the edge of your vision you might see a bit of distortion
