MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G Golden Edition

I wonder if the all copper heatsink is a preview of the next lightning. $400 is a little much compared to the base price of a 970 but i do want one.

kind of irrelevant considering aftermarket coolers already bring these cards to less than 70 C under load, and they're still pretty much silent at that. i don't really see the point of this card. it's not going to get any better clocks than other 970s.

Looks good. I'd pick up a pair if I was on the market for some good aftermarket 970s

Nice to see them get it on the market quickly after my post about them. Great to see them offer a higher clock and boost over the regular GTX 970 gaming card also.

Regular GTX 970 : Core Clock 1140 MHz Boost Clock 1279
Golden Edition GTX 970: Core Clock 1165 MHz Boost Clock 1317 MHz

With this cooler I can see a more stable overclock on these cards. Those that had their Gaming 4G's at 1600mhz but had to downclock because of temp throttling may be able to get a solid 1600mhz + overclock. But you never know YMMV

temp throttling? i thought it was the power limit's fault.

That made me spit my drink out on my laptop's monitor.

This is what I was wondering. Makes me wonder why they didn't include one to begin with. Since basically everyone else had one with the other brands.
Hopefully they will give everyone one free or sale it at a low price.

Would like to be able to buy this backplate for my gaming model...

30 dollars is a little excessive for a back plate (and not a fan of the color scheme either), the OC is almost nothing, you'd have to have a really bad silicon lottery to get a normal 4g to not OC to those clocks...

Don't get me wrong I have reference 980s overclocked very well. I wont be buying these to exchange them but the thing that catches my eye most on these is the following from their marketing

"The new MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G Golden Edition features increased clock speeds and improved cooling performance, thanks to an all-copper heatsink and heatpipe with anti-oxidation treatment."

The bold and underlined part I provided above should equate to (one of the) IF NOT The best all-air cooling setups on a videocard ever. Now add that to a MSI Gaming with all of it's extra bells and whistles and we have a winner.

It's a nice looking card. for the size and performance probably the nicest 970 out there.

That's a sex machine.

And per the throttling... I found my 980 with the stock bios would go down a bin around 57C. That's been fixed now. ;)

Now THAT sounds like it's worth the $30

NooOooO! Lol. Nothing's perfect, huh? :D
Lol, man if you got the extra cash, 10/10 would buy again. For myself, nah, I've got other things to deal with first, lol.

I had one card that was pretty close. My ASUS GTX 670 Direct CU II didn't have any coil whine. As far as buying again - probably not. It was 1AM and I was kind of punchy at that hour. :D

1AM impulse part buys. I think a lot of us suffer from that.

I hope so. Makes it easier to grab the card from the back and keeps dust off of it. Really the only thing I want from the Limited Edition over the Gaming. $400 is a bit too much for me though.

You havent seen the Herculez X4 then. ;)

Gaudy oversized heatsink and ridiculous name aside, the thermals do look very impressive. Too bad it doesn't seem to translate to more overclocking headroom.

Here are some benchmarks from my MSI Gold edition. How do these look? Can you give me any indicators on what I can or should push up anymore using Afterburner or should I be happy with these results?

No manual OC applied:
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/4718525?

A second run, with manual OC using Afterburner:
Core clock 1,279 MHz
Memory bus clock 1,819 MHz
Graphics Score 12752
Overall 9567

Do I push the Core clock up more? The memory clock? I have Power Limit set to the max of 110 right now, but haven't touched Voltage. As you might be able to tell, I'm new to this stuff!

Keep upping the core by 25 until you start seeing artifacts then back off by 100MHz (there might be a spot in between that is stable if you want to spend the time). Then try upping memory by say 2% at a time, find where it's stable.

Make sure you're looking at actual boost speed in Afterburner or whatever tool you are using during the runs. You can also track the card's temp as you may need to up your fan speed f you're getting near the limit.

The cards are smart as in they are practically impossible to damage with the stock BIOs.

Voltage probably isn't worth it unless you use a modified BIOs, which many of us have, but installing it has it's own risks of course. A modified bios would take away power limit (for all intents and purposes) and you could up your voltage slightly more.

Check out the 970/980 OCing thread but it should be pretty easy to hit 1500MHz and beyond.

Can you show me the link to that OC thread? Also, I feel like I pushed my core clock closer to 1500 but Fire Strike wouldn't complete one of the first scenes and would give me a partial result with a lower score, as a result.

Another problem I just started having:
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the MSI gaming app twice now but when I launch it it just appears as a tray icon but then it disappears when I mouse over it. The app itself never even shows up and doesn't appear to even be running as a process. Help?

Did you download latest msi afterburner off the web? Not sure if that's the same as the app your taking about. In general all you need to do is download the drivers from nVidia and then an OC app, people seem to prefer afterburner. I think most avoid the stuff that comes on the disk.

I just purchased this MSI GTX 970 Golden Edition to replace the EVGA GTX 970 FTW...

Please tell me this is a good card. I've been through EVGA 970 SC, SSC, FTW. The FTW was going great until this weekend when I started having random driver crashes on the desktop of all places, I turned down my OC and kept turning it down. Now yesterday and today I'm experiencing a half second flicker on my display which didn't happen for the 2-3 weeks I've had it. Long story short I have an X58 since April 2010 and has been flawless with 2x GTX 480 FTW HC was hesitant to upgrade just the GPU but needed something to hold me over until full upgrade. Have NOT been successful with the EVGA GTX 970s

Spent all day reading and it would seem MSI used good components into their cards, not sure what EVGA is using but I think mine is on its way out.
