Why Aren't Professional Gamers Cool like Professional Athletes?

You think athletes are cool?

Cringe... :D

This is like a 9 second video what are we suppose to see?

Cause they sit on their butts =) They might have good internal qualities that make them function on a high level. Fatality is pretty cool not sure of the current MOBA players.

How cool do you think Oscar Pistorius is?

How many athletes are rapists, murderers, and thugs? How many athletes are practically illiterate, and end up broke despite earning tens of millions?

Atheletes aren't cool. Celebrities aren't cool. Pro gamers are not cool. Pro gamers are probably the most uncool because they, at least to me, seem the most disconnected from me. I do like traditional sports like baseball at least a little and I hear the players on TV and on the radio and such, but pro gamers to me just sit behind their computers and play games and that's it.

I do like watching people stream games on sites like Twitch when they are interesting and when they react to/chat with the people in their channel, making it fun for all.

Even though I'm a gamer, watching someone silently sit behind a computer and press buttons on their keyboard could not be less exciting.

OP, here are your answers:

1. Pro athletes have better "people skills" because they spend most of their time looking and slapping each other on the ass. It's a big circle jerk of physical compliments. After the game they likely spend a lot of time in the mirrors naked with a big proud smile on their faces.

2. Pro gamers on the other hand get bombarded with name-less 12 year olds who seem to know nothing other than loud curse words. Outside of the games they deal with a culture that still by-and-large sees them as "losers". This does not do much to boost the self-esteem.

^ Soooo.... Solution: see a pro-gamer, be sure to cat call and slap him/her on the ass. :D

That is the stupidest question I have heard so far today, which says something because I've been up and on the internet for the last three hours... ;)

Gamers = Flabby nerds
Pro Athletes = Cut and toned

If you haven't realized it yet, sex sells.

OK, perhaps "cool" isn't the right word, but rather just have better people skills.

Take this athlete, he's all mack-daddy supreme and super smooth in interviews:

Pro-gamer interviews, it seems they are sometimes afraid to whisper their names or just come off super weird. ;)

Pro athletes derive all their power from the fact that for a large majority of the population... "sports" are the only way to feel part of something big and meaningful, or a way to feel glorious and special despite doing absolutely nothing on their own to achieve it. This is the same sort of thing we see with a dad who pushes his son into little league, and then beats up the coach because his kid doesn't make all star.

Society is willing to give hundreds of millions (billions) to people who are largely illiterate, and sometimes terrible people. How many stories have we seen of people who have it all losing it all because they are just fucking stupid, athletes who father dozens of children, support none of them.

There is nothing wrong with liking a sports team or anything, but we all know the guy or girls that take it WAY too far. Who act as if the only reason team X succeeded in a year was because they were parked in front of the TV or at a sports bar yelling at the top of their lungs.

While I love video games -- I tend to view any professional gamers in the same way. I'd rather play games myself than watch some asshole kid get paid to do it.

Or be real instead of hyperbolic and nonsensical...

1. Pro athletes have most likely spent their single lifetime physically working towards perfection. In a vastly more competitive arena that only the most paramount achieve professional success, few stand out and should be recognized for absurd levels of talent, physicality, but mostly an overwhelming dedication and drive to succeed that will never be comparable to someone who dines on fast food and makes a living from sitting on their ass all day and perfecting the art of mastering routines and/or human programmed software vulnerabilities.

2. Pro gamers sit on their ass all day and perfect the art of mastering routines and/or human programmed software vulnerabilities.

One of these humans is a true skilled athlete, the other is someone who at very best has done nothing but waste their life. I could go on, but why bother.

There isn't some big difference most of the best pro gamers I knew had some athletic background or interest if pro gaming had not come along they probably would have went a high performance athlete route.

People are just cherry picking the events they want and comparing apples to oranges to try to force their point. By the time you see a pro athlete they have already had tons of interview experience and they are working with the most professional journalist. Which is the opposite of hitting a 16 year old kid breaking out in pro gaming. Go back to that age or late high school for a pro athlete and see what they would interview like when nervous for the first time. Half of them cant stitch a sentence together at 30 let alone then.

For example ever see a pro basket ball interviewer force people to sit in a shitty low saggy couch? Nope, why? Because it makes you look slouched it doesn't make you look presentable. They want you on firm high cushions. But in this 9 second video that was what we saw an idiot sitting a person down on grandmas couch with no springs left. So completely separate of any personality issues you just have a completely different level of professionalism that is cast down from the journalist on the gamer. As gaming grows in popularity you will see a lot of this mature and get worked out.

I could go dig up lots of horrible interviews of pro athletes for you if you cant get it though. I think they are pretty much just the same with the exception of the pro athlete often needing a certain muscular build if either one of them makes it, they will make more money then almost all of you here, either one of them fails, well they will probably not have any future.

I don't disagree with your points. Obviously you value the physical perfection of an athlete over the advanced hand-eye coordination of a gamer. You represent the norm, I think, but to say one wastes their life at their craft of choice is really not true and really really not cool... Both professions could have just as much merit and potential for a rich life full of giving back to the community or achieving whatever other goals one might have in life.

Yup, I have to agree, both are literally just playing GAMES, no difference. One just involves running and jumping, the other primarily mental only.

But the pro-athletes for the most part are able to focus on their particular sport AND still manage to interact with humans without spazzing out, a skill we need to get pro-gamers to devote a little time toward. :p

"Cool" people don't care about what others think and keep to themselves.

And celebrities/athletes have the worst fucking taste on the planet. A majority of them only appear well groomed because of personal stylists.

Pro-Gamers are to Chess Grandmasters

As

Athletes are to Celebrities

This thread makes me sad.... Face reality, take a shower, and venture out into the real world.

Because they're not.

This. Also "cool" is subjective. If you think celebs and professional sports athletes are "cool" automatically there's a problem. If meeting the president twice didn't impress me I don't see why someone who's good at there job and makes a lot of money would. I mean there are a ton of those people and they're just working the 9-5.

Well, Ive seen Fat1ty or whatever name he goes by, getting lots of girls in Taiwan.. that means something ahaha

Some rather interesting perspectives here.

In some regards, there is a higher turnover rate amongst professional gamers and games. Making it harder to get to know and remember names (pseudonyms, avatars, etc.). One year's top player might not come back to the same game (unlikely but possible) or that game is "dropped" from professional play. Not to mention that professional teams will add and drop players on a yearly basis, again making it more difficult for names to be remembered. There is also that omnipresent principal that as more games come out, professionals will either develop skills in a new game or be left behind (potentially).

Professional gamers are also not fully mainstream either. While millions game recreationally, they do not view it as big of deal to be a "professional" at it making talent easy to dismiss. Athletes are viewed as being "super human" for having a more tangible (visible) talent that far surpasses the average person. A talent that is both mental and, in some cases, extremely physical. I suppose that the general public would say that mental and physical ability is not on the same level for someone with a superior mental ability who can move their fingers fast (professional gamers). Please note I am not saying one is better than the other, I am just explaining my viewpoint on how I believe society would feel.

I am amazed regularly that people are able to do things that much better than me. I am average at gaming, and average at sports. I know that if i tried to compete on my best day against professionals in either gaming or sports, I would be dominated to the point of embarrassment. That quality is what makes those other people "professionals." It is just gamers have more hurdles to overcome (social, technical, basically the stuff I wrote above) to reach the popular, "celebrity status."

Personally I've watched some tournaments of CS:GO streamed on Twitch. When they pan the camera over to the actual players, most of them are either overweight or 90 lb sticks and I cringe every single time. Is it really that surprising that people don't want to watch out of shape kids play a video game?

Pretty sure looking at most online forums or listening/reading gamers type/scream in-game, this isn't a good comparison the other way, either.

Yeah, really. Professional gamers and athletes are people. The stats for crime/other problems will be relatively comperable between athletes, gamers, and the rest of society. They are just subsets of society. All prone to the same flaws (generally speaking).

Gaming can be seen as more of a hobby than a serious sport. My parents tend to see gaming as a hobby or something along the lines of something non-professional. I imagine my dad would take up gaming if he were my age, but doesn't and enjoys stories from books. I enjoy Mass Effect, Deus Ex as well as CoD and Battlefield. It's a newer medium, and older generations may not be as into it. They're not wrong to have no interest in it.
Having said that, my skills in sports and on-line gaming are equally deficient where I will never have a professional status...unless one is given for cannon fodder.

The notion "cool" basically means someone who can present himself with confidence and handle social situations with finesse.

A "gamer' spends an inordinate amount of time alone and insulated from social activity; thus it is perfectly natural that he is not "cool."

Athletes are more likely to be "cool" because sports are inherently social and they spend a great deal of time in a tight-knit social group.

HAHA! :p

I follow a few pro gamers who aren't annoying or creepy. I'd rather just do it myself most of the time, but I don't have the gaming time I used to. This means I don't have time for neck beards or ADHD swedes either. This is the era of pro gamers that need to be palatable.

Its quite simple. Athletes move around and actually do stuff, pro gamers sit and look at a screen all day.
