If you are the kind of person that can be swayed by Facebook to vote...you probably shouldn't be voting in the first place. Just sayin'.

On Election Day, political campaigns, candidates, consultants, and pollsters pay close attention to who votes and why—and so does Facebook. For the past six years, on every national Election Day, the social-networking behemoth has pushed out a tool—a high-profile button that proclaims "I'm Voting" or "I'm a Voter"—designed to encourage Facebook users to vote.

Hmmmmm, vote for a rich guy looking out for himself and others like him, or vote for the other rich guy looking out for himself and others like him. Tough decision.

I for one can't wait until the day after voting day, no more political ads on TV and the radio!

Ding ding ding!

More and more people are realizing this, but sadly knowledge doesn't change anything.

It's not who votes that counts, it's who counts the votes.....

With so much voter fraud going on, and the refusal to prosecute people even when it's discovered, it's getting to the point where it doesn't really matter if you vote. Even when politicians do the opposite of what they ran on, they still get reelected.

Welcome to the Banana Republic of America....

Failbook: Because we really need more uneducated self-absorbed gullible idiots going to the ballot box.

Here's my election day advice:

1) Do you know the candidates' records, ideologies, and platforms?
2) Have you studied the issues and understand them thoroughly?
3) Do you vote based on research as opposed to listening to campaign ads and speeches?

If you can't answer "yes" to these questions, do the country a favor and STAY HOME.

Can I add to that? Do you vote only based on political identity (D or R or whatever)?

Too many people vote for a party rather than a candidate.

Nevermind, I thought they were taking votes on whether to shut their company down.

Too many people have given up too much in my behalf so that we can vote. It is easy to be cynical, it is more difficult to appreciate a gift.

Despite Facebook's social engineering experiments it's still important to vote come Tuesday. Yeah they are all in the pocket of big money but the Dem's are the lesser of two evils. The Repub's are blatantly against us all and we would be wise to acknowledge that. They want to destroy our social safety nets, get rid of the minimum wage, remove all obstacles to their financial manipulations and strip everyone of all the money they can get. Teapublican's are the modern equivalent of the 19th centuries "Robber Barons". Vote blue, vote for Wendy Davis. Just vote!

Exactly.

That was kind if implied, but absolutely. The "Us vs Them" party system is an abomination and has destroyed what was supposed to be a representative government.

Is this a paid for add?

Voting is important not for electing leaders, but for pacifying the public into thinking that they have some level of control over their government and feeling like the one choice provided to them is actually "their" guy and support him. That is why they promote voting so much, because if people didn't vote and recognized that the 1% ruling them wasn't making decisions in their favor, they would all be united against that government... and that's not necessarily a good thing, because even an evil government is better than anarchy in the grand scale of things.

But yeah, voting is a sham, but a necessary one for the worker bees to continue to silently and obediently collect the pollen and bring it back to the hive until they die.

A democracy was once viewed as a peaceful revolution. Our two-party system is one more party away from every other fascist/communist(dictatorship, there has never been a true communist government) in the world. I depend on my state to make the good decisions. My vote carries more weight when I vote on a state-wide level. The Federal government can't keep itself balanced and as a consequence can't keep business' in balance. At most politicians should be considered First Among Equals. I suppose the Secret Service is necessary for those unable to take care of themselves, but the six figure salaries are not. The Federal government should operate in the background, only focusing on the necessaties to keeping the country running. I don't want some asshole living a few thousand miles away from me mucking up everything with a crap ton of laws. Laws create order, but I don't want the same order Stalin created. When laws have to be passed left and right, something is broken.

Don't misunderstand me. I think uniform laws are a necessity. That is the whole idea behind the Constitution. Everything else needs to be left to the local governments and communities.

There will never be anarchy. Anarchy is about as possible as communism. It will quickly break down if ever brought into practice.

Common sense should kick in even on Facebook. Look at this site as an example. It is governed by rules that were made using a little bit of common sense. Those with absolutely no common sense were exhiled, and those who had to learn through mistakes were accepted into this community. This is how any governing body operates. So long as the government stays balanced, not many will complain.

Facebook is like an E-Mail account but in reverse. Everyone can look at your E-Mail. You can post something and people can read it. I don't see an issue with that. The data mining thing is a bummer, but maybe facebook will unintentionally fix that by getting more people to vote. I hope.

I am having trouble trying to summarize my thoughts on this. I guess I just don't want to discourage voting in general. By not voting, you have given consent to whatever is being voted upon. If you want to sit on your ass, don't open your mouth the rest of us don't want to hear it since you don't value your opinion anyways.

I consider voting a part of the checks and balances deal, and cringe everytime someone says voting is a wasted effort. If it is a wasted effort, then what other efforts have been made that work as well as casting a ballot?

I don't have a FB account. I do exercise my right to vote.

I think voting in THEORY is not wasted at all, but in PRACTICE it mostly is nowadays. You said it yourself, we have two main parties, but they've both been bought by big money. Check out this comparison of Obama v. Romney, they have the same answers for almost every issue!

I'd say the only way to have a HOPE of fixing ANYTHING with our system is to vote for a third party, however our system is pretty much fixed to ensure that 3rd parties are not successful on any meaningful scale. So your options are voting for a party that will not fix our most serious problems, or voting for one you KNOW will not win. If that's not a wasted effort, what do you call that?

I would love to vote but my ballet type is illegal. :(

Besides...

In Colorado we kicked out 2 jackass politicians and forced a 3rd to resign. Your voice has power local affects state affects national. By doing nothing you are the biggest problem this country has.

people are so cynical, voting actually works pretty well, its just the candidates chosen are the ones the mass public voted in. So what you see and the problems are the fault of the public. Basically the public doesn't care enough about what really matters to you.

It is fine to consider voting a waste so long as you do so because you recognize that you do not agree with the mass public on much of anything and you are such a niche voter that people like you do will ever matter. But at the very least you might have a chance of swaying some sort of vote. For instance net neutrality issues. If the gen x / millennials started voting with net neutrality as their main criteria trumping abortion, gay rights or whatever they are voting on you would see that get fixed so fast.

The real problem with politics is that people have been so obsessed with issues that never change they can never seem to really get together to fix really easy issues. I don't care what side of the abortion or gun control laws you stand on ask yourself have either of the sides ever been pleased? Nope not at all. So why doesn't either side finally just say the split country is what it is and move on to issues we could actually progress on? I guess I always figured the answer was because other issues like net neutrality and taxes are too complicated, its easier to just line up on a side of abortion or gay rights than to try to sort through economic policy or educate yourself on ip trafficking.

By not voting at all, you voted for the guy you didn't want in office. I've been throwing my Presidential vote away since I have been able to vote, and now others are doing the same with other positions. Politicians notice when they lose 6% of the populations vote and it didn't go to the "other guy."

I've only voted in one presidential election, but my experience had been that it wasn't one of 'I made a difference' but of 'I could have been doing something more useful with my time'. The system is excellent at creating apathy, so much so that even once you realize that it's setup that way, you still don't care because you realize the insurmountable odds of changing it.

That's just my take. Come Tuesday, I'll be doing something productive, called 'work'.

Political pandering like this should get the same treatment as religious proselytizing on message boards.... though with a name like that I can't really see anyone taking you seriously to begin with.

Lets say I give you the choice of getting lemon squirted in your eyes or crushed pepper shot in your nostrils, and I ask you to pick one of them. If you refuse, then you have no right to complain when one of the two is forced on you, right? And if you do choose say lemon to be squirt into your eyes, you can't bitch that it stings because it was YOUR choice after all, right? Heck, in a way its even your fault that lemon was squirt into everyone's eyes. Lesson learned, and next time you'll vote for crushed pepper in the nostrils.

That's the whole voting sham, and really the primary purpose is to ensure that the people fight among themselves for little issues that are of no real importance to the ruling caste (abortion, gay marriage, illegal-immigrants, etc) so that they aren't focusing on big picture items.

On a forum that bleeds red, you might as well have said voting liberal is voting for Hitler.

Option A - I vote not to vote.

Option B - I vote none of the options presented, so other.

Option C - I vote for the potato.

Many people in this forums subscribe to the "just world" belief. Under that philosophy, the actions of the Democrats would be seen as immoral as their platforms seek to directly interfere with that ideology. Republican policies are much more consistent with rewarding people who are successful and punishing those who are not. You can argue which side is superior all you want, but you have to understand the opposition's core values also, otherwise it just looks like us v. them.

Let's say people take the time to research and do their civic duty. The time you took to think up a poor analogy could have been better spent.

Write in a candidate if allowed, or blanket vote for any party that is not R or D on your ballot. It may not be much, but it is better than nothing.
Think what might happen if all of the cynics out there all actually went to the polls and voted for somebody, anybody not a D or R. Maybe, just maybe, someone who is NOT merely the lesser evil might get elected someday. Sure maybe not the president next time around, or even a US congressman/senator. But maybe we can start off in the state legislatures, and then eventually score a few governors, and move it up from there.
Oh, who am I kidding, most of you are going to either not go to the polls at all, or just punch a straight R or D ticket, then complain about the outcome.

I either vote independent or write in.
To me it feels like when you vote Republican or Democrat you've voting for "Who is going to F#CK me over the least?"

I tend to vote Republican because I like guns and am not a huge fan of killing babies.

I voted early with the wife. She got mad at me later. Fun times.

I sprung a boner when I heard those three flunkies got dropped kicked in the tits.

If I'm not mistaken it was also the first recall elections in state history. Fucking awwwwwwwwwwwesome.

I use to say this until I realized that the parties have become all powerful (thanks campaign finance law) and on each side have crushed any dissenters/mavericks.

Your local guy may be especially corrupt, so in that case toss him. But otherwise in almost all cases if you elect a member of a party, you enhance that party's power.

We have become a parliament where your specific rep. is irrelevant and your are really picking a party now.
