Introducing Microsoft Health & Microsoft Band

America is the fattest country in the world. No one gives a shit about health.

Fail.

America is the fattest country in the world. No one gives a shit about health.

Fail.

35percrnt of people in the US are obese. Yes that's ridiculous but it also says that we have 65 percent that are fit, or at least not obese, which means around 65 percent of people do give some shit about their health.

I liek the idea of these smart wearable devices and I would really like to get one sometime, but Im waiting for the technology to mature a bit before I buy one.
So far I think the best one I've seen is the Motorolla 360, but the processor they chose for the device was an older generation and I believe the battery was dated as well.
I want a device that is aesthetically pleasing, light, has a heart rate monitor, can be used to display USERFUL information, and doesnt need to be charged EVERY day.

Do any of you wear a fitness tracker of some sort?

yes. they're called pants. when they no longer fit because im turning into a gelatinous fatty- i am no longer healthy. the faster they fail to fit, the faster im going to die.

I have been looking to get a FitBit, but since this one combines the good parts of a smart watch, and is a very advaced fitness tracker, I may get one of these instead. I also like that it works with every smartphone OS out there. Very un-Microsoft of them.

If this were waterproof I would seriously consider it. But it isn't.

Oh, that's definitely the recent MS strategy. They release all their shit on iOS & Android before paying any attention to Windows Phone. I can say that pisses both of us WP users right off.
Still, I ordered one of these. Maybe it can help get rid of a couple of these chins.

Wrong.

It doesn't imply 65% are fit. Apparently you forgot that there's another category in between "fit" and "obese," under the name "overweight." So no, much less than 65% of MURICA is actually considered to be healthy.

Officially, it's "water resistant"

They define "water resistant" as being submerged below 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.

Unless you're literally going to swim laps while wearing it, water isn't going to hurt it.

Actually, the Band was released on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone same-day.

Not only that, but some features (like integration with a voice assistant) are only available when paired with a Windows phone.

I'd say they have their priorities in order.

I wear a Nike Fuelband + around all the time. Works nice as a watch, is pretty resistant to the elements, and while I don't really use it to monitor my health much, I do pay attention to the amount of steps I go through during a day, and it's of particular use when I do my long walks/jogs also.

The king has been dethroned: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/mexico-takes-title-of-most-obese-from-america/

Well, the way they calculate "obese" in this country is retarded too. An athlete / bodybuilder with less than 5 - 7% body fat that weighs 210lbs at 5'9" is severely obese.

Back in my bodybuilding days, I had to actually have a physical by a doctor for insurance because the BMI for 5'8" - 220lbs was something like 35% body fat.

Can Microsoft please stop playing the "Me too" game? C'Mon!
I'm just not seeing a lot of original ideas out of them. A lot of the copies are not going to make it. Why would I buy this over a FitBit, AndroidWear, or the upcoming iWatch? (Actually for me, I'm not buying any - don't find them interesting at all).

Our health insurance company was giving them away at work. There are a lot of them in desk drawers now. Pure gimmickry to sell more Chinese junk. "You're fat. Buy this."

The cell phone/NSA/Google (Android) company gets plenty of data from the accelerometer in my cell phone, but I'm not wearing jewelry. They can keep that crap.

I wear a vivofit.

No offense, but I would suspect many of the present crowd probably don't do a whole lot of fitness. This isn't exactly the core market for these things.

If they market this well enough, they could sell quite a few for new year's resolutions.

and then they will be tossed in the junk bin shortly after people give up their resolutions.

I resemble this remark. I do the stationary bike and push and sit ups but I like my burgers, pizza and cheesesteaks.

Does anyone wear one of these fitness trackers?

Yes. I wear a Garmin VivoSmart to track my fitness, activity, and pair with a heartrate sensor during workouts. Added bonus, it also tells me my calls, txts, and other notifications.

But then again, I'm also an athlete. So it makes sense for me to wear one.

I'm not sure about the MS entry here. It could be a great device but in a crowded marketplace (everyone makes a band now) it needs to:

- Be compatible with all phones via BLE. Not locked to a particular OS (*cough* Windows *cough*).
- Actually provide quality sleep tracking and data presentation. Not some meaningless graph (Garmin and Polar are terrible for this).
- Have 48+ hrs of battery life. No point doing sleep tracking if you have to take it off during the day to charge.

I wear a fitness tracker... it's called my stomach! When it gets big I know that it's time to work out!

It is compatible with iOS and Android. That's one of the big selling points, it works with the phone you have, not just Windows Phones.

Okay you're right, 69 percent of Americans are overweight/obese which I think is wrong TBH. If I go into a store and look at 10 people, I know for a FACT that not only 3 of them are going to be fit. And if you just want to look at statistics, then there are still 30 percent of people who give some shit about their fitness. That's over a hundred million potential customers.

Yeah, I think the way they calculate it must be wrong.

While waiting in line in my car (this is 'murica. nobody walks) at Jack in the Box, browsing [H] and came upon this headline. I doubt I'm the target customer either. I just finished ultimate bacon cheeseburger, large size curly fries, potato wedges, and giant cup of dr. pepper.

Some have a vibrating alarm which I think would be useful. Then again you might wake up screaming DON'T TASE ME BRO!

I've been researching heart rate monitors for awhile. Was probably going to wait for the Apple Watch but this looks pretty solid. I like that it's not locked to a single phone ecosystem. The price isn't too bad either.

BMI is stupid hip waist ratios are far more relevant to health although still not perfect just as quick and dirty to measure.

Well, I bought one this morning with next-day shipping. I'll have it in my hands by 10:00 AM tomorrow.

I also have a Lumia 920 to pair it with...so I'll let you know how it works :D

The weight categories are under, normal, over, obese, and morbidly obese.

And there is no serious difference in long term health between people of normal weight and over weight.
Even people labeled as "obese" don't have significantly more health problems.
It's when people get to the upper end of the obese or into the morbidly obese categories that you start to see significant increases in health problems.

Basically, as long as you don't have any real problems getting around, such as taking a 2 mile walk or spending a couple hours walking around a park, then your are not likely to have any more health problems than someone of normal weight. In fact you might have less problems when compared to someone who wears out their knees jogging every morning.

To be honest, I don't actually see how all these are useful in anyway - except if they monitor heart rate, I guess.

A few weeks back I looked into Fitbit's offerings, and did not find any compelling reason to get one. They count step... and? What does that mean? We all walk, I don't know what's particularly useful from that information. And even then, their calculation is not 100% perfect, neither at the counting part nor calculating burnt calories. And let's take into account that everyone's metabolism is different, so...

Oh, hell, and the last thing I want is another device notifying me of stuff. Look, you got a message, a post, a call, an email... no thanks!

Maybe I just don't understand them. To me they're more of a fashion statement than a product that actually provides any real utility <shrugs />

I've worn a fitbit one for 2 years. It actually helps me because I link to my friends and we try to outdo each other with steps and stairs each day. I take the long way around when I walk to meetings and I park the car further away. Small stuff, I know. Bit I do think it helps keep me more active.

I have a moto360, and it is cool. That said, I always have a watch on, so switching to a wireless charging smartwatch with multiple faces was no big deal.

I'd like the battery to be better, but maybe a better processor would have helped that.

The best face is the Speeds face, for race fans out there.

Cheers!

BMI IS an outdated way of measuring obesity, but even then...the specific situation here would only apply to a fraction of a percent of obese people. This country is full of fucking fat ass slobs, not short body builders.

Typical fatass apologist bullshit. This (false) assumption is one reason America is so damn fat and unhealthy in the first place. "Wellll...I'm only a little bit more of a fatass than he/she is...I'll be fine." Being simply overweight (and I'm not talking about athlete "overweight") significantly increases your risk for a myriad of health problems...and obviously the risks grow as your gut grows. If you are wearing your knees down while running, it means you are doing it wrong and need to work on your form. Hell if you don't like to run there are about 3454345 different non-impact exercises you can do to burn off that grilled heart attack and 13 mountain dews you consumed the day before.
