Apple has just reported its fourth quarter results and things are looking good for the iPhone. The iPad...not so much.

Apple just dropped its 4th quarter earnings a few moments ago, revealing that the folks in Cupertino raked in $42.1 billion in revenue and $8.5 billion in pure profit -- more than enough to take care what it might owe in back taxes.

i'm a big fan of my iphone 6, would have bought a 6+ had they had supply. Kudos to Apple.
 
We just bought a shitpile of ipad airs, and surface pro 3's.

Guess which one everybody wants to switch to once they see it in action?

We now have a pile of ipad airs...
 
With the rise of larger phones there isn't as much need for them. Especially the mini ones.
 
Welcome to bigger screen phones, people with bigger screens tend not to need tablets.

This would be 3rd quarter in a row that ipads have lost sales, i think the last 2 months were 9% each time. Tablets are dying, big screen phones have been gaining ground for a number of years now.
 
Welcome to the post-tablet fad world where phones combined with non-tablet computers fill the computing wants of most people and maybe this weird, creepy love for smearing finger goo all over screens has gone away for a few years except on phones.
 
So much for portable phones being... Portable. No thanks. I'll stick with my iPhone 5s. Even that phone felt a little big.

Tablets are far from dying, the market is still growing though at a much smaller rate than a year ago. I think the biggest problem for the iPad is price. I know a lot of people buying tablets, but nothing over $300 these days. Of course I think bigger phones are part of it as well, but iPad sales have been slowing for almost a year now, so I think pricing has more to do with it relative to iPad sales.
 
ipads are sinking because people realize you can't do shit on them, so they're going back to laptops.

and ipads from 3 years ago still work just fine.
 
I use my iPad air but I spend a lot of time in airplanes and airports (and it is kind of nice for that) ... I would like a new tablet if it was bigger ... I use my tablet to read books, magazines, and comics and a 12-13" screen would be ideal for that (and still be airplane friendly) ... I do want to get an iPhone 6 or 6+ as well and a new windows based desktop pc ... hope my budget holds out :)
 
I still like my ipad, but I don't feel the need to upgrade it as often as my phone. That and everyone in the household probably wants to have their own a phone, but can share 1 or 2 tablets. So it's not that surprising that ipad sales are down. I'm sure the new iPad will do fine though.
 
iPad airs and similarly speced android tablets are amazing as a beginner device, media centric thing that you need to check email on and netflix. But if limitless productivity is required nothing beats a SPro. All the win of MS regardless of having wifi or data.
 
Forgot to add, iPads are built like tanks so the reason to upgrade reduces significantly.
 
Lies! Apple is probably readying an iPad server, because ARM, and people are just waiting for that!!!11

For what it costs the Surface Pro probably sells pretty well for an x86 device. Microsoft releases numbers this Thursday which will be the first full quarter of availability for the SP3 so we should have some idea how the SP3 is doing though Microsoft doesn't release unit sales numbers but only revenue.

However overall the Windows tablet market is probably doing better than the iPad since over the last year Bay Trail has come online which is remarkable improvement in x86 low cost/power platforms coupled with free Windows for smaller tablets and even larger devices with Windows with Bing.

I think that what we'll eventually find is that a lot of the SP sales are business enterprises buying them. As for Windows tablets in more broad terms, smaller and less expensive stuff like Bay Trail 8 inch Dells and their like will account for most of the volume. Honestly, who in their right mind pays more than $500 for any computer these days? It's completely insane spend more than the least possible amount for some junky electronics parts that are just throw away devices.

If you want large SSD capacity, an IPS equivalent or better screen above 780P or 800P with solid desktop performance and all day battery life, you're going to spend considerably more than $500. And such a device should last for at least three years. If it's something that you sit in front of for 8+ hours a day, 5+ days a week to earn a living or for studies that cost many tens of thousands of dollars, it's just not that much money in the long run.

Well, the SP falls short on that. I'd totally not wanna stare at that things itteh bitteh screen for 8+ hours. It'd need prolly something like 15 inches or larger, a decent keyboard, and a good mousey and that means it would have to be docked at a desk so you may as well get a laptop that integrates all those parts or a desktop. Those all cost less than the SP does for the same performance.

yeah apple needs a tablet that will run a full blown OSX, the Surface Pro 3 is amazing. We might be getting them here too!

I agree. I still have my iPad2, and it runs like a champ. It's hard to justify upgrading it like I upgrade cell phones.
 
My kids use iPad's a lot. They play games, watch YouTube and Netflix.
I use them occasionally for email, but generally use my iPhone more.
BestBuy has a $150 buyback for iPad2. I'm going to trade mine in (which I won at a conference), and get either iPad Air 2 or iPad Mini 3.

It's going to be interesting. Many, including Apple, think the idea a hybrid OS/device simply doesn't work and that hybrid design compromises each part of the whole where it's simply better to have two devices. Windows 8 certainly didn't do the job of convincing many people of the hybrid OS but I think the Surface Pro 3 does a very good job of the idea on the hardware side.

If Windows 10 gets the hybrid OS design issues of 8 worked out, it's almost certain that it will be better than 8 in that regard with the Continuum idea and the next Surface Pros can go thinner and lighter with fanless Core M designs, it's going to be harder to simply say that hybrids are problematic. Heck they are even getting dirt cheap, E FUN, whoever that is, is releasing a $179 detachable keyboard hybrid this fall. Not the best specs but for $179, if the thing just runs without major problems that would be pretty impressive.
 
I have an iPhone and a mbp from 2011. I love my iPhone and every single smartphone I've ever had has been an iPhone. Ive tried twice to get an iPad and justify keeping it past the return period. Despite how hard Ive tried I felt that the added comfort and lower weight could not make up for the limitations it faces compared to my mbp.
It's not like my mbp is a work computer either. I use it to pretty much maintain my lifestyle and keep me entertained. Torrents, Providing remote tech support to various people that "can't even", and even jailbreaking mine and others iPhones. While I could get an iPad and keep my mbp for the other things, my mbp cost a lot o money and i just don't buy nice computers to only use them occasionally. I could also better use the money I spent on the iPad. I am seriously thinking i am going to buy the rumored 12 inch mba. I really wish that apple did something like the surface pro as I like OSX alot.
 
Good for Apple.

Maybe next time they can actually come out with something we've never seen before. ;)

What does the newer iPad give me that my "New" iPad (iPad 3) doesn't have? Not a whole lot. Little reason to upgrade. Similar to how a lot of people aren't upgrading PC's as much anymore. They just last longer. Software isn't taking advantage of the better hardware. Hardware is just getting better and better, but software is stagnant (to a point, it's not moving as fast as the hardware is). I haven't had a need to upgrade.

I'm going to a Surface if I can in a few weeks to replace my iPad and laptop. But, the iPad still works perfect, it's fast, it does everything I need it to do, it runs everything in the app store just fine.

I just think people that have them see little reason to NEED a new one. Those that WANT the new one are still buying them, though.

That's what happens when you don't actually provide any "reason" to upgrade other than flash in the pan features.

Why would anyone who joined the tablet craze and likely doesn't do hardcore gaming on their tablets want to dump $500 into a new one? The regular consumer doesn't see a reason to yet.

Frankly if I were to advise anyone on buying a new tablet I would recommend the Surface 3. Excellent tablet thats really a laptop as well and has WAY more expansive options and future proofing. The only reason to own an iPad is simply to watch shit while you shit and plays iOS games.

That may be true for basic consumer level laptops, but not for business.

I need laptops with 16GB ram, 1080p screens, and at least 1TB of storage. Plus they need to support a docking station for when the user is in the office, and they have to be built well enough to handle 3 years of travel.
That requires a business level laptop, and is going to cost well over $1000, and maybe closer to $2000 if I add a 1TB SSD, the docking station, 2nd monitor, etc.

Actually, it applies to any laptop you need to do more than watch netflix and check your email on.
 
Almost everyone I know who has or went Apple did so because "it just works."
They don't give a rat's ass about speed or screen size as much as having the same exact experience as they hop from device to device.
Really, even with Android, as long as your tablet has a dual core cpu it moves fast enough for most people, and everyone I know with at least an iPad 2 says what they have is plenty fast enough for Netflix and a couple cheesy games that the kids wind up using most of the time anyways.
I just gave away my Viewsonic G-Tablet (dual core Tegra cpu) with dock to my uncle so he could use it hooked to his tv for Netflix and my little 7" D2 tab to my nephew so he could do Netflix and Youtube. Both run fine and fast enough for what they're used for.
I still do most of my e-book reading on a dual core 8" Nextbook, and picked up a Xperia Z2 tablet (waterproof, don't have to worry about it getting wet and shorting out outside) with 4g to use in my cars to run Torque on and mount as an oversized GPS/ performance real time monitor, oh, and to let my nephews and nieces play a few games on and watch Netflix on when I watch them.
The Xperia Z2 tablet doesn't feel like it runs THAT much faster then the Nextbook when reading, surfing the net or checking mail. It runs games a lot nicer and with a better picture, but I still mostly game on my PC so....

there are *huge* differences between a standard iPad and an iPad Air.

Just to start with the form factor itself is notably different. I rarely used my iPad but my iPad Air is used all the time in comparison, and it's mainly due to the form factor. I'm going to sell my iPad Air and get an iPad Air 2. The processor and the touch ID are reason enough. I'm not sure how anyone who has been using Apple products for any length of time would consider that there have been no notable differences between the standard iPad, the iPad Air, and the iPad Air 2.
