Hey folks,

Been on the Planar SA2311W for awhile now, but it's starting to not fit current needs as well. Here's some thoughts of what I want for sure in a monitor so far.

 1. 27-32 inch
 2. 1440p or 4k
 3. 120hz plus if non-4k
 4. Semi-Glossy/Light matte preferred but I suppose a full glossy wouldnt be end of the world
 5. <$700 shipped preferably

I wont be doing any sort of professional work with this, just gaming and browsing articles/desktop stuff on it. I play a mix of different types of games, rts, action/adventure, fps, rpgs.

Would really love a 4k 60hz monitor, I'd just drop it to 1080p for whenever I wanted the 120hz.

It'll be matched with the rig in sig. I know the 7970 would start to be a little weak by itself, but I plan on replacing it whenever AMD shows what they got in response to Nvidias recent release.

^lol i was about to type that xD
I would also grabbing another 7970 if you plan to push 120hz @ 1440p

Agreed.

Also, all current 4k displays are terrible and do not meet your criteria.

Bah of course there's not really much haha. So I take it I would be limited to 1080p for bigger screen size and 120hz+? Is the Qnix/Xstar a decent monitor? seems pretty cheap, didnt expect it to be under 300. The Tempest looks interesting, only a month away it seems.

I have to run out so this is going to be a pretty quick response.

The Qnix/X-star are both excellent IPS monitors, however they are sold out of Korea and have terrible quality control, are not guaranteed to overclock to 120hz, and lack any real warranty outside of buying a squaretrade warranty.

If you go this route make absolute sure you are buying a Qnix/X-star with a Matte Samsung PLS panel. Do not buy anything that says TRUE10 or TRUE10 SE, these will not overclock.

This is what you want: http://www.ebay.com/itm/QNIX-QX2710...4491?pt=Computer_Monitors&hash=item1e876ecd0b

Alternatively, if you're in North America you can buy from http://www.ipsledmonitors.com/default.asp which ships out of the US and actually has a return policy. Carefully read their warranty here: https://www.ipsledmonitors.com/Articles.asp?ID=252

I'm not particularly well educated on the Tempest, so I can't tell you much about it outside of the fact that it will overclock to 120hz. Perhaps an owner of the monitor could pop in and comment on the build quality etc.

Also, if a person by the name of rabidz7 comments in this thread please ignore him as he is a known troll.

Hmmm. If I were to go with the Qnix, I would get it from ipsledmonitors instead of ebay. Looks like they have a zero dead pixel policy with their 3 year warranty. I ordered my Planar from tigerdirect for the same reason, dead/stuck pixels annoy me :p What does the minimum overclock tend to be on the Qnix monitors?

Checking around about the Tempest it seems like 96hz is at least guaranteed. But it has a 3/3/5 pixel policy instead of zero :/ Has anyone used/compared both these monitors care to share their thoughts/experience?

Price difference isn't too much between the 2 after shipping. Qnix would be 420.78 shipped with the 3 year warranty and 493.69 for the Tempest with their 1 year warranty.

I ordered the qnix Wednesday and have been waiting for it to ship. Just got this email in.
We’re very sorry for the delay; we know you have been waiting patiently for your monitor to ship.

Would you be interested in modifying your order for the QNIX QX2710 Glossy instead of the QX2710 Matte finish monitor? Unfortunately there is an issue with our remaining QNIX QX2710 Matte stock (we tested all for major defects). We do still have the QNIX QX2710 Glossy model in stock, and can ship it ASAP.

is there any difference between the glossy and matte aside from the ag? My monitor is next to a window facing west so glossy might be a bit annoying.

I'd go for matte unless you close your window every time you use your comp :D

Ask them if it's an actual glossy version or tempered glass.

You absolutely DO NOT want tempered glass, it's highly reflective and blacks will look grey.

If they can't get you a matte or actual glossy Qnix, you may want to try for the X-star which is exactly the same just re-branded.
