This week Sprint finally threw in the towel on its once revolutionary WiMAX 4G network. As of November 2015, the WiMax network will shut down and revert the remaining last-gen handsets to 3G according to a leaked newsletter revealed to Android Central.

But things were very different a half-decade ago. At that time WiMAX looked as if it could be poised to dominate the U.S. cellular market as the fourth generation cellular network standard of choice.

No it didn't. Sprint was dumb for going down this path to start with. I was a Verizon store manager at the time so I was pretty well versed in the cellular world. No idea what they were thinking.
 
No worries the person in charge of the WiMax era is gone. I still have my Evo Shift laying around a back up and my palm pre as my backup backup.
 
I got sick of Sprint's terrible customer service so I went to Verizon.
Compound bad decisions, poor service in most areas and customer service that ranks right up there with Time Warner and Comcast and you're looking at a high customer turnover ratio.
 
Wait a minute. Has this been running all this time?
Sprint's network was so slow I thought they turned it off long time ago.:D

Speaking as someone who went from Virgin Mobile (Sprint prepaid) to Verizon...

I was happier on Virgin Mobile, for fuck's sake.

Verizon fucking sucks ass and lies about everything.

There was some staggering 5% coverage as WiMax before they pulled the plug.

It literally had zero chance seeing as Sprint was the only one to buy off on it and then they barely led with it when LTE was starting to get picked up by Verizon.

Virgin Mobil is just a MVNO. They have nothing to do with Sprint except use their towers (which sprint of course charges for). Virgin Mobile is owned by Virgin, so this means if you were happy with Virgin Mobile, you won't necessarily be with Sprint.
 
You are right on the first part but why are you correcting TFA? On the exact same page it says the parent company is Sprint which immediately makes Virgin Mobile a subsidiary.

Under its revised terms of service, Sprint said it "expressly reserves the right to migrate" customers from its WiMAX service to Sprint's LTE service. "Reasonable advance notice" will be given to customers who might be impacted, and they will have several options: They can choose to finish their contract without WiMAX capability, they can deactivate their service without being charged an early termination fee, or they can transition to Sprint's LTE network. If a customer chooses to switch to Sprint's LTE service, they "will receive a free standard Sprint LTE-capable device and can maintain" their existing service plan, "if available." Sprint said it also may provide other offers that are separate from the transition option, and these offers will be subject to a new two-year contract per line.

Seriously dude. Stop trying.

Despite the branding, the two are the same company.

When Virgin started selling the EVO3D... IT STILL HAD SPRINT BRANDING ON IT.

Wimax was useless. The Evo 4G was my first smartphone. Wimax had awful coverage and practically no building penetration. And Sprint's 3G is like 1980s dial up using a 9600 baud modem. I left Sprint for Big Red as well. At least I get coverage and 4G LTE practically all the time.
 
Odd. I use sprint and have no problem with it whatsoever. OTOH, my friends who have verizon hate it. The big problem is service; there is no cellular company that gives a rats ass about it's customers. None. They all absolutely suck. At least when I discontinued sprint back in 2009 to go to at&t to try an iphone, sprint didn't give me any arguments. Right now, I'm winding up in a civil suit with at&t just to get them to stop billing me for service I tried to cancel already. But of course, the service rep refused to take my request to cancel. It was kind of like the youtube video about the comcast nightmare rep, he just wouldn't take 'I no longer want it' as an answer. I had paid through my contract, and didn't want the service anymore. I didn't try to get out of anything. All I wanted to do was shut off the service. But no, at&t expects you to pay them forever, whether you use the phone or not.

The all suck. Every one of them.
