GTX 980 May Lose The Performance Crown To AMD’s R9 380X in February 2015

4 months is an eternity in this industry...

Nah. It used to be. Remember that Nvidia, for a time, was bringing out 2 new cards a year, one potentially being an optimized core, but both bringing good improvements. And they used to upgrade process nodes on reasonable timeframes. We've had 28nm and more incremental improvements less often for a good while now. In the past, new GPUs would often improve performance by 50-100% in many games. The 900 series seems to do a good job optimizing power given the lack of process node upgrade, but performance improvement is very incremental.

Damn, I can't believe Nvidia is getting away with the performance crown for 6 months (Single GPU) with such a small performance upgrade. I mean it's like 10-15% faster than 780Ti. Maybe when Drivers mature it'll be a solid 15-20% faster but still <shrug>

Anway it's better AMD wait and do it right with a Hard launch and great pricing rather than rush something out the door.

Good for them.

It depends on how you look at it as the new cards pushed used prices down with new buyers dumping there old hardware which makes those used cards have better price to performance .. now Sli 770GTX or CX280X is very affordable at $400 or less and would crush the 970GTX in performance .

Agree, but having run a 7950CX for a year now, while I've a lot of horsepower (15K graphics points in Firestrike on moderate OC), sometimes this does not translate into fps gains in games.
Some games are not well optimized for multi-card setups, so if you've an option always go for the single best gpu you can afford.

This is hilarious. The newbie AMD fanboys coming out of the wood work. I use to be like you back in the Radeon DDR till X1800 days. "Nvidia gonna get wrecked". Nvidia knew a year ago that 20nm wasn't going to be ready and had Maxwell ready for 28nm. Basically taking a 3 year old process and still holding the performance crown with only a queef heard from AMD in the form of R285. The original rumors of Full 16/20nm Maxwell were available in 1Q 2015 with a late March release which is very possible.

If I was a betting man, I would say Nvidia is doing a limited run on 28nm Maxwell.
Basically one version of each:GTX960/970/980 with a limited edition dual chip GTX 990.
I wouldn't even fool with a Ti variant of any version. Then when AMD launches 380/390 you do a paper launch the day after showing your hand for March. Cannibalize the early sales, game, set, match point. Fanboys can't keep a company a float all alone. Look at the CPU division. ;)

This is the exact scenario that happened with the Geforce 7000 series that "owned" the market back in the day, and its happening again.

Oh and please quit with the "rekked, wrecked, getting reckt" statements. A company bleeding money out of its CPU division and now getting hammered hard by the GTX970/980 in GPU division is hardly "wrecking" anything other than their own bottom line. FACT: AMD DOESN'T have the resources or R&D Nvidia has. They are allowed to exist to keep Intel and Nvidia from having monopolies in each arena. Take an economics class.

haters gonna hate,

lettuce be real, the 980 doest offer any real perf increase over its current line up, so lets stop frauding,

furthermore, people arent going to upgrade for power efficiency, great i just saved 4$ on my electric bill by switching to nvidia, … said no one ever

fact is both amd and nvidia are scrambling to 20nm and amds gonna get there first, and wrexk nvidia, again

in conclusion, nvidia gonna get reckted!

And fanboys like you are just blind.. its pretty obviously that you don't know any shit about the videocard market.. 980 over about ~15 - 20% extra performance over the 780TI at a much lower price without being the top end Nvidia card and that is out of the box..! and its well known that Maxwell overclock like a demon to over 1500mhz easy.. even a factory overclocked setup of 970s outperform the 295X2 easily at a way lower price and way way more power efficient a factory overclocked 980 outperform the Titan Black out of the box.. you need to really open the eyes and learn how to shut up and stop being a fanboy.. im a trusty supporter of AMD I have a bunch of AMD cards and CPU because I like the competition, but damn you are just blind.. this its just the start of the same Fate of the CPU division but now in the GPU side..

Stock to Stock the performance differences are not consistently 20% so that's not entirely accurate. In fact the fluctuations are below 10% to barely 20% with the high-end percentage being in the minority of benchmarks I've seen thus far. Saying it's 10% faster would probably be more accurate.

However, I do agree with fixedmy7970, just not the execution. Nobody buys a minor upgrade for power savings unless they just have money to blow, like buying new shit, run multi-gpu setups, or actually use them 100% 24/7 (i.e. F@H). It's almost irrelevant in savings gaming wise. Then again nobody is expected to upgrade every single generation. That's silly. Coming from a GTX 680 > GTX 980 is a big deal. If you go from 780 to 970/980 that's just silly to most people unless you're that rare percent and even then you can't speak as if you're the majority if you are. That's what leads to fanboyism.

This is what it's all really about...

5 months after NV releases a card, AMD will release a card that is faster.

Fanboyism should just die already with GPU's. We know every year how this goes down. Every fucking time and the whole world seems to shit itself in the craze. Remember how we knew just about everything about the 900 Series 2 months prior to the announcement and all us Nvidia guys were laughing at the specs and modest 10% improvement even for a lower cost? Suddenly Jen-Hsun Huang speaks and the release drops and people start worshipping Nvidia as if they've done nothing wrong. Human behavior is amazing. Fanboys and victims of domestic abuse seem to have the same thing in common. They both come back for more even when they know they shouldn't.

do not forget that nvidia not only search for people to dump their 780 and 780TI and jump immediately to 970 and 980..they want something more important than that and its to grab and catch AMD consumers.. all of those who bought 290 and 290X because they offer better price/performance than 780 and 780TI and are already tired of the Noise, Heat production of those 290 Series.. and also all of those who are still in old cards like 280/280X and 760/770 cards... their GTX 970 its just amazingly priced for the performance offered for those users specially all of those mentioned in the 290 Series.. so you can have above 290X performance for 330-350$? how can be that so bad?.. you want a little more premium performance? pay the for the premium 980.. thats it.. nvida made correctly all the steps and grabbed a lot of AMD users and that its how you make a midrange priced card to make the competency cards obsoletes..

nvidia didn't grab chit. team AMD isn't impressed with maxfail.

You're saying that to someone that has an OC'd 280X...

Look, we all hope PI is a powerhouse when it's released and offered with low power draw, low heat output, and especially an incredibly competitive price. But it's asinine to troll around stating things about it like you already have one. Be a realist: be hopeful about it and remain patient until it actually gets released. AMD might fumble the ball...and then how will all your recent comments make you look?

4 months is an eternity in this industry...

exactly. That's a third of a year. By then everything you buy today is outdated. Your phone will be outdated too even if you buy a high end one today.

You can go back to your rag tag nvidia subforum with your girls.

I have owned equal parts nfail and amd, and frankly since the 6xx series nfail has been sandbagging yet still requires a premium to play....

My 290 has been good to me, and I'm sure the 3xx will be the same, but you seriously have to have downs to buy an nfail product anymore.

Well, I hope the date is wrong. AMD will likely suffer if they have to go through the entire holiday season with last year's Hawaii cards.

I dont think it'll be too bad if that happens. You're making the typical mistake in somehow assuming AMD has to price the cards where they currently are.

AMD can easily drop the price of the 290x and 290 and that's all they have to do, because the 980 and 970 hardly outperform them by leaps and bounds. It would be different if 980 was 70% faster than 290x or something.

I say easily, because the chip that makes 290x/290 (forgot the name) is 438mm^2, while the chip in 980/970 is 398mm^2. Not that much difference. So cost should be mostly similar between the two.

Heck AMD has plenty of experience in CPU's of pricing chips 2-3X larger than Intel's at a LOWER price, because they have to. Undercutting a 10% smaller chip should be a walk in the park.

Sure the 290's will still suck more power etc which counts for something I guess.

I think the other factor is most enthusiasts wont really need the 980/970. Anybody with a 290/290X/780/780Ti/Titan/whatever probably doesn't feel a burning need to upgrade, because they are not THAT much faster depending. Although yes there's always those nuts who have to have the very latest and greatest and surely a lot of them post on forums like these. Again, it's not like these are 50% faster chips, they dont set new performance levels.

FACT: AMD DOESN'T have the resources or R&D Nvidia has.

That's funny because, in GPU's at least, Nvidia cannot seem to gain much if any performance advantage at all (if anything it's probably been shrinking with each round of cards). So Nvidia are wasting a lot of R&D dollars, or something (or maybe it's going to mobile).

CPU's is another story, everybody involved in engineering Bulldozer should have been fired, that was a colossal screwup. Bit then again that was AMD vs GPU=ATI.

Heck even in CPU's, it seems to me like Intel has left AMD a pretty good opening, if they ever actually do anything (aka a new architecture finally). It's not like Intel has exactly been blazing new performance trails either for the past several years (basically since the quantum leap=sandy bridge)

The thing its to understand Nvidia you have to see they as a economist guy.. they are Toying with AMD, why? look at the GPU market share.. nvidia its gaining consumers every year.. AMD injured seriously nvidia with the 290 ad 290X specially their pricey cards.. then nvidia just strike back with the 970 and all people again turning back to Nvidia.. they are just doing the same strategy with the 600 Series but with lower prices.. they are making money bud and that is their business make money why change the strategy if its working? just like intel made with the CPU division.. as i said before im a trustworthy AMD supporter since they bought ATI 7-8 years ago.. but man we have to be honest right now, they have to launch a card that its able to outperform a 980 out of the box at a lower price taking into consideration that Nvidia can just simply drop the Price of the 980 and launch a 980TI and then all the job its done they also have to think in the other part of the cake, the sub 300$ people, nvidia have in the paper the 960TI and 960.. a 200$ 960 and 260$ 960TI they can hit hard again because we have to be honest, most people on AMD side are Budget builders just like the CPU division.. remember that R&D aren't only architecture even coolers are involved there.. and as intel nvidia have enough money to toy with AMD with this kind of small percent incremental performance they are making money fast and gaining market share by a large amount specially taking into consideration that A LOT of people are dumping a single 290X to buy 970SLI.. even I have in order 1x 970 and 1x980 in the meanwhile my 290 was just used to test at launch (yes the reference hot and loud card) and done its there in the box and i'll give away to my brother..

Hah, that's bringing back some memories. I too remember the ATI fanboys all "512-bit memory" this, and "unified architecture" that. The 1800 XT turned out to be a bit of a power-hungry, under-performing joke (even though the architecture was a forerunner of the venerable 1900 XT). The fact is both nV and ATI have had some failures e.g. GTX 480.

I haven't seen anything from AMD rumored or otherwise that would suggest they can beat Maxwell anytime soon, and definitely not in 1st half of 2015. In fact, I can't remember a time when one party was looking to be so deficient for so long (maybe R600 vs. G80, but at least then AMD realized they were beat and went with the value angle)

Rumors are saying end of this year possibly. As far as I'm concerned the GK104 and GM204 are high-end chips. They are being marketed and sold as high-end so they are Nvidia's highest end chip. Just because we know deep down inside it really isn't shouldn't change things. If they want to play that game then so be it and for a high-end chip/card it sucks.

The power draw is already a myth that many people don't want to admit. Toms, Linus, and a few others have already shown how it actually can eat up more power than a 780/780 Ti for both 900 cards. Nothing more than voodoo clocking when you're not running them 100% for long periods.

It still doesn't get anywhere near as hot. Mine at 1500 mhz barely cracks 70c with the fan not going over 70%

I moved from a 580 gtx to this 980 gtx and lemme tell ya, it's quite insane. It runs 10C cooler than the 580gtx ever did, at around 110% performance at stock clocks and around 170% performance when overclocked.

first off, you should have saved your money for the 390x, which should arrive in november. its based on bermuda, with over 4000 sps 512bit bus, prolly likr 8gb ram.

in conclusion, this thread title should read, "nvidia gonna get wreckt in november by 390x"

ok keep dreaming.. you don't even know what are you talking about.

brah, 390x gonna have over 100% higher bandwidth due to 3d layering, improved lossless compression of the 285, superior sps, and bermuda core. if you think your nvidia prius will hang with the 390x, then you are even more of a fanbois than me.

oh whats that i hear? oh nothing because the 390x awesome liquid cooler

390x wont be out till 2015, wait

Uhhh, which is it - this November or not until 2015? Figured you out of anyone else on the entire planet is more than qualified to definitively answer that question just based on the characteristics of your posts.

Wonder if fixedmy7970 and rabidz are the same person. One account being pro-nvidia and the other pro-amd.

This went downhill rather fast!

The 390X when it releases, looks like a very competent card, but for the moment the Nvidia offerings are very good.

I guess that we could close out this conversation right here - there is no reason to argue any further.

… but whos is pro intel, the actual gpu market share leader?

It's funny, they are the market leader because most people don't even know they're choosing them. It's funny when my family members contact me and ask why they can't run the Sims 4, Battlefield 3, or Call of Duty on their less than 4 month old laptop :D

Once in a while they buy a desktop and can be upgraded but how many people actually buy desktops anymore :)

Good... I like when both companies trade blows. That force the innovation and keep the prices in check. If not for 290 and 290X, we would never see 970 at its price. And without 900 series we can hope for power efficient 390 architecture. Just like 3D Surround was answer for Eyefinity.
