Ikea desk gallery

Just realized I don't have mine in here, despite in being in my sig :p

this is version 2, which is only better than version 1 in a single way, and crappier in most others. the original had the corner going the other way, with all the mounting holes properly lined up, a nice flush glass panel and USB bay. then the wife decided it need to be moved, which required the corner to be on the other side, thus a new top and me quickly mis-drilling the new mounting holes. also gone was the glass top insert (don't really need to see it anymore, its been stable for 3 years) and the USB bay was relocated (got tired of the cat turning it off by walking across it). the only improvement was a new distribution block made out of 1.5" x 1.5" plexi-block that replaced the two pcv pipe based manifolds it originally had. the motherboard tray no longer sits level, but it doesn't really bother me enough to redo the hinge mounts either.

new distabution block:
(screw was from the first version where the tray rested on it)

loop has twin 240 radiators and MCP35x pump. Pump pulls from the reservoir, feeds the first radiator, then it goes to the distribution block. CPU and both GPU's all run in parallel. from the block it then goes through the second radiator and back into the reservoir. despite everyone saying this doesn't work, I have ran it this way for about 3 years now, peak load temps hover about 45c as report by the hardware sensors. .the lines going to the cards are flexible with two-way shutoff disconnects. the lines to the reservoir are half hard and half flexible to ease in water replacement and refilling.

Looks like the Galant has been replaced by the Bekant line. The Bekant desks, at least on the Ikea GB website, appear to have some large radius corners that look to make piecing various desks together like the Galant series difficult.

Hopefully another manufacturer steps in and makes a Galant successor. The flexibility is awesome, along with the quality. Not just for trendy tech startups, these desks are everywhere.

Whoever made this decision at Ikea needs to be taken out-back and given a stern talking to.

I recently just bought a black/brown off of Craigslist. It's getting harder to find extensions and frames. :(

found this as a nice hack to a Micke desk. gonna try this one as it will fit my area perfectly. Its simple and elegant. gonna add a matching side table to keep my rig up off the floor

thanks

lcd arm: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=201981104
lamp: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20370383

at the time (week or so ago now) buy.com had the best price on the arm with shipping, so thats where i bought it. at some point in the future i'd like to have another arm + lcd off that mount. i can confirm that both the monitor arm and the lamp shake a little bit when you type (its actually the desk that is moving). it doesnt really bother me, but is something i may work on minimizing in the future (thinking little silcone washers or pads might solve the issue... honestly you cant really complain though on an ikea desk). please let me know if you have any suggestions~

1. 10 ft DVI cable and 10 ft power cable:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10209&cs_id=1020902&p_id=2759&seq=1&format=2

http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10228&cs_id=1022801&p_id=1292&seq=1&format=2

also had to put a usb hub about half way in the wire holder for keyboard, mouse, desktop mic and battery backup usb connections. no way they could have reached on their own. there is also a small powerstrip in there for things like my bluetooth headset charger, blackberry charger (all hidden), the lamp, usb hub, printer and hard drive enclosure. i have no more power outlets on the strip and no more open usb ports on the hub. in hindsight i probably should have bought the 7 port usb hub instead.

just a note on the dvi cable... 10 ft isnt long enough in my configuration to provide sufficient slack in the monitor arm, so i had to let the cord out a little bit from the cable holder before the arm. you can see it coming up in the picture under the lcd. next option would be 15 ft, but i would have had to coil it up a bit in the cable holder.

2. 3 wire organizers (called 'signum') from ikea

3. i also bought a matching bookcase (effektiv series.. will build it this weekend) and some odds and ends while i was there. just added up what i see on the receipt and it was about $500 for the desk. that includes the corner desk right, straight extension plus the small round and frame extensions for each. had 3 signum cable management deals + the computer holder. the drawer unit is another $160. obviously i could have built a much cheaper setup, but had a pretty specific idea of what i wanted and the space it needed to fit in.

ikea has several desk pad options. specifically i have this one: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30129964

surprisingly it is pretty good quality and actually has a sturdy metal body under the leather. it works nicely as a work area/mousepad for my laptop that i can just slide out of the way to game on my desktop.

i had never been to an ikea before this... ultimately this thread gave me most of the ideas :)
that mat is actually pretty good. with the cheap laminate on most ikea desks. it wraps over the edge to protect the desk

Ikea Orlando has a shit ton of Galant stuff left.

I just picked up a Bekant. Assembling now, will post pics when complete. I liked the legs and rounded corners more on the Bekant. They also have this one weird shaped one.

Little net thing underneath that's good for hiding wires. I'm still working on the cable management.

I don't have too many options. I'm still in military housing.

Did you get the sit/stand Bekant or just the reg version? How do you like it so far, and can you compare to the Galant?

Sounds good! Looking forward to the pictures!

These legs seem like they can adjust a lot, haven't played with them too much, I can check into it tonight.

I like the legs more than the Galant and really made my decision, they're black not grey. I haven't owned a Galant but I have wanted one forever, and I could have gotten one for about 2/3's the price, but it would have been the biggest one and I just don't have the room for it.

I'm very happy with the Bekant, from what I can tell its literally just rounded corners and newer (firmer/steadier) legs/frame.

The net underneath is very handy for cable management. It's not perfect, I'll probably go back and get one of those Galant cable management things other people have posted if they have one.

I'll get some better pictures as well tonight, those we're just camera phone quickies.

I need a Galant style desk so badly as I'm moving in a month and need a new workspace. I can't find a desk like the Galant anywhere where the "corner" area is very deep (I'll have dual 24" monitors in that corner) and the corner is curved where you would place the keyboard.

Anyone know where I can find something similar to the Galant since they are impossible to find anymore (I check CL every day)??

So I stopped by the Atlanta Ikea this weekend and was able to check out the Bekant sit/stand desk. I believe it might have been love at first sight, that desk will be mine! Now I need to sell my two Galant desks, one straight with two wings and one curved with one wing. Both are Black/Brown in case anyone in the area might be interested ;) .

Man do I wish you lived in the NY/NJ/CT area :(. I want the Galant so badly.

Man, I wish I still lived in ATL instead of WI... 15 mins to check out the desk vs 90 mins to Minneapolis. :/

[Checks IKEA's site] ... $500! Hm. I miiiiight be able to justify that. :)

For those who have Galant setups with extensions, how exactly does the extension frame work? I'm trying to piece together the desk I want through separate purchaes on Craigslist but it's my understanding that you can't just joint two Galant desk frames together. So how exactly do you go about extending the frame to accommodate the extensions so that you can get rid of the extra legs?

Also, is the frame for the galant + extension the same on both sides of the curve regardless of if you use the corner right vs. corner left top? The reason I'm asking is that I may be able to secure a frame and the desk top I want separately.

It's nice, right? I'm loving it.

I asked this in the workstation thread too.. where do you guys put your machine? Do you put it on top of your desk? Or do you have a stand? I have carpet and on the floor isn't optimal

I bought the $15 Lack tv stand from ikea and put my mini-itx and usb peripherals on it + subwoofer beside it under my Galant, still plenty of leg room

My friend wanted to join 2 galants together w/o the extension frame so I took a quick stop to the hardware store and grabbed some steel plate joint thingies, screwed those in and screwed an extra table leg in the center between them. The result was surprisingly solid! Don't have any pix though :(

I've got a whole set of shelves next to my desk to hold all of the computer stuff. But I believe that Ikea still sells little metal legs that you can screw onto a piece of wood, if you wanted to make a single low shelf for something to sit on.

I went to purchase a FREDDE desk not having an IKEA near me.. $350 shipping.

Would be about the same price for me to take a day off of work and drive 4 hours to Pittsburgh. Seems to me someone who lives near an IKEA would make a killing buying and shipping single units with a small markup lol.

Yep. Shipping is actual cost through IKEA, which is why it took so long for me to get something from them. I had to move within an hour of one.

The extension frame for the half round works fine. It's essentially just using the 2 metal extension bars that side into the ends of the frame and then you screw it in on one side, slide the other table frame in and screw that together. Place table ontop and screw down and then screw in these 2 plastic pieces that keep the gap closed. Very simple, I extended my galant by 2 full size desks using this method.

For anyone in CT, there's a couple of galants (long table with one rounded end piece) in the clearance section of the New Haven Ikea. Or, at least, they were there.

Very nice. I am considering getting into this was well.

Wonder if a galant top would fit on those bekant sit/stand frames.. Tempted to get one and try it, then I could use my desk as a work bench for systems as well.

Just bought 2 table tops one for my wife and I a bunch a legs, a shelf for the wife, and a bunch of random crap that was on clearance. Wish i could get he FREDDE shipped but too expensive there.. Hopfully will have some pics next week.. exciting times :)

Preliminary setup. Have a cabinet I think I am going to move my networking stuff. You can't realy see my Seagate Central NAS or gigabit switch with my chromebox hacked with Windows 10 preview that I can remote into. Doesn't seem to have video acceleration though. Was going to use the Chromebox as a Plex Server.

Ikea Jerker Desk I found locally. We don't have an Ikea in the state I live.

Sorry for the poor cell phone pics.

It sure fits somehow, you just have to drill new holes in the galant top. The Bekant frame is not as wide as the galant. Maybe the holes are even on the same spot but I dont think.

I'm probably going to buy a Bekant sit/stand desk tomorrow with a new white top and going to retire my 11 year old Galant top. I'm going to check it out tomorrow at the Ikea and if I like it going to buy it. Then on sunday I'll probably assemble it and I can place my old Galant on the frame and take some pictures

It does not fit. By "not fit" I mean the holes are on different spots. Of course you can just use different screws and attach the Galant top but the base is totally redesigned. They are not using screws anymore but kind of plastic clips with a second pin to secure it. I was kinda disappointed. Its holding good for now but if you want to disassemble it you have to keep the 3 crossbars on the top and remove the bottom part of the frame.

Btw the legs are very heavy

Wife said I should start looking for a new computer desk to put in the spare bedroom since that is where my computer will be moved. What is the latest best computer desk? Doesn't have to be ikea. I know I looked at galants a lot but they stopped making them if I recall. Would like something that contours in the middle so my hands and forearms can rest on the desk.

Any help appreciated.

I would still go look for some used Jerker and Galant desks...otherwise I would end up Frankensteining my own desk w/ some table tops and T-Legs from Ikea with a steel frame from a hardware store.

So bitter about the discontinuation of both Gallant and Numerar. My next best option is to build a desk using the new "oak" Akerby counter tops. Taking possession of my first house on Monday so once i have a chance to make some detailed measurements I should be ordering some counter tops next week. :D

I'm a bit concerned about the particleboard center, I was planning on cutting out some channels for cables and holes for monitor arms so the desk could be flush to the wall. Not that it would be visible but I wanted to round off all corners of the channels with a router or something.

I finally found a Jerker for $50 on Craigslist - pictures to follow!

I love the desk, but it did not come with the side shelving that swing/swivel. I like to think I'm fairly handy so I tried to find some type of bracket that I could use to mount a shelf and have it perform the swivel, but I struck out at my local hardware stores.

Does anyone know where to look for these shelves or have alternative ideas for 2 swivel shelves/brackets?

Added a small shelf to my Galant desk. My keyboard and mouse wires will run under it and I no longer have to look at the clamp mount for my triple display stand.
