Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday unveiled its next Windows operating system, Windows 10, and gave a first look at an early technical preview for the PC available Oct. 1. The announcement highlighted advancements designed for business, including an updated user experience and enhanced security and management capabilities. The company also introduced the Windows Insider Program, kicking off its largest-ever open collaborative development effort to change the way Windows is built and delivered to best meet the needs of customers. Program participants will receive the technical preview of Windows 10 and a steady stream of builds through the development cycle to use and give feedback on.

“Windows 10 represents the first step of a whole new generation of Windows, unlocking new experiences to give customers new ways to work, play and connect,” said Terry Myerson, executive vice president of the Operating Systems group at Microsoft. “This will be our most comprehensive operating system and the best release Microsoft has ever done for our business customers, and we look forward to working together with our broader Windows community to bring Windows 10 to life in the months ahead.”

oh, great. So now the version numbering system goes like this:

Windows 94 = 4.0
Windows 2000 = 5.0
Windows XP = 5.1
Windows Vista = 6.0
Windows 7 = 6.1
Windows 8 = 6.2
Windows 8.1 = 6.3
Windows 10 = 7.0 or 6.4??

Its only a matter of time before people complain about this one for some silly reason. Either, if its true that Windows 8 user can upgrade for free then I'll be getting it.

Mind you, I didn't have much of an issue with Windows 9.1 with a keyboard and mouse.

Alrighty then... When I read this I had to do a double take on the name. I think most of us were certain Windows 9 was going to be the name. Baffled.

Before the fiscal quarter is over Microsoft will be unveiling Windows 11

Again the question remains where the fuck is version 9? Again and again Microsoft tries to get cute and falls on it's face. Millenium, Vista, 8/8.1 and now 10. What are these idiots thinking?

oh, great. So now the version numbering system goes like this:

Windows 95 = 4.0
Windows 95OSR2 = 4.01
Windows 98 = 4.1
Windows 98SE = 4.11
Windows ME = 4.2
Windows 2000 = 5.0
Windows XP = 5.1
Windows Vista = 6.0
Windows 7 = 6.1
Windows 8 = 6.2
Windows 8.1 = 6.3
Windows 10 = 7.0 or 6.4??
Here's the corrected list. :)

As long as it works better I don't care what they call it.

Start button back YAY but OMFG!!!! it has metro tiles on the side this OS sucks!!!

I think it's likely going to be 6.4 as I don't believe there is a major kernel revision here.

I just realized something. OK, so 4 and 9 are bad luck numbers to the Japanese. Windows 4.0 became Windows 95, and now they've skipped 9. Japanese influence?

I don't really care what they call it either, 10 is just fine, as long as it is better than 8/8.1.

I've been running 8.1 on my main pc this year. I'm looking forward to 10.

What the hell, Microsoft? Did you hire the version numbering guy from Sun?

Win 10 or OS X

hmmmmmhmmhmmm

I thought you couldn't get OS X without buying their hardware

( and if you can't present pics of overclocked and modded Apple hardware you lose your [H]man permit :p )

Based on the comments here, I've determined why they called it Windows 10.

So people won't whine about the flaws in the OS, but instead will be so distracted by the version jump that this will be the main focus of all media discussion in the immediate future.

ok, in Japanese, their word for the number 9 can be pronounced as "ku" which is the same pronunciation as the word for "suffering." So, Windows 9 could be known as "Windows Suffering" in Japan. Perhaps they were avoiding that.

Hmmm - maybe I'm just showing my age, but I can't help after reading the above all the attention Windows 95 had on its launch with the Rolling Stones song "Start Me Up". The second verse of the song starts with "You make a grown man cry" :D

It sounds like they've listened to their customers.. so its Win7 with multiple desktops.
Maybe new management means they finally understand that they're losing their desktop market. Not because the competition improved but their half-assed 'me too' design choices were driving people away.

Stupid naming aside, it looks like they've addressed the majority of my UI complaints. Start menu back, looks like the tiles can be removed / moved around, no more stupid hot corners and funny mouse movements when using a desktop, and it looks like metro apps can be run in a window now (cuz you know - it's windowS)

I'm cautiously optimistic.

Hopefully they don't bork it up with other stupid things. Any word if they added their native backup tools back in? I like that the win7 backup tools are reliable and come with the OS. How about media center - still a paid upgrade?

Well, Windows 95 was version 4, which the Japanese word for it can be pronounced as "shi" which is the same as the word for "death." So, Windows 95 was actually "Windows Death." I think that fit pretty well.

Arctic Silver skipped 4 for the same reason if I recall correctly.
It was either that or Ceramique was #4....
Its been a long, long time.
BTW, Ceramique is pretty rocking stuff, cheap, efficient, doesn't conduct electricity and it lasts YEARS.

"enhanced security"

Einstein once said the only difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has limits.

I would add that the only thing that can possibly be worse than no security is false security.

Proprietary software is and can only be fundamentally insecure. I wonder how many more hundreds of "updates" it will take for people to figure it out.

Hypothetical question, what would happen if MS released one of its sunsetted OS's (e.g. XP) to the public domain?

If the name of this, or any other OS, is your major, or even minor, concern, you obviously need to learn to go through life without looking to be offended.

As long as it works better I don't care what they call it.

Exactly, being upset over the name is, at best, silly.

Could be, and from many people's reaction so far it appears that if this is why MS did it, their plans might work perfectly.

No!
We're getting a 3d based Minecraft OS!
You get to hunt and destroy viruses coded as "Creepers" and "Skeletons" and retrieve your data and files in block form!

Start menu is back. Customizes itself to the device you are using. This is what 8 should have been.

Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 = 6.1
Windows 8/Server 2012 = 6.2
Windows 8.1/Server 2012 R2 = 6.3
Windows 10 = 7.0 or 6.4??

added few missing ;)

I think the version number was to serve a several purposes that others have already mentioned:

1. Distance from Windows 8.x
2. The people that are complaining about are probably among Microsoft's harshest critics and getting them complain about this distracts them for the actual product, that they'll no doubt criticize regardless.
3. It was a surprise that ultimately means nothing.

They can call it Windows Pink Pony OS for all I care so long as it looks and acts like 7 but runs faster and has DX12 as a close to the metal API.
