Benq BL3200PT (32" 1440p)

Could someone help me and post the measurements of the green and red area? I'm thinking of buying a LED strip kit once I get my hands on the monitor. The kit comes in several sizes and I'm not sure which one to get. The small one has two 30cm strips, the medium kit has two additional 40cm strips.

Played Divinity all night. Really liking the black levels and the size...

Need some help. I really like my monitor but I can't get settled on a color setting. I tried the ICC profile from tft central and it comes across as a hazy picture for some reason. the games seem to look ok but when im web browsing it just has a weird look to it to me. it's funny because I find the black level almost too dark. I'm really trying to avoid buying a color calibration piece of hardware because I've spent enough money on the monitor.

Well, how long have you had it? Part of it is just getting used to a new monitor when you're coming from something else.

Also, I believe that ICC profiles are ignored when you fire a game up, so that's probably why games look fine.

Beyond that, there are sooo many options when it comes to tuning the monitor. I'm a firm believer that you do not need a hardware calibrator simply to be able to enjoy the monitor. Consider the fact that you have several presets available. If none of those appeal to you, you can choose the User mode and adjust brightness, contrast, gamma, color hues, etc. to your heart's content. Surely you can find some combination that appeals to you once your eyes get used to it.

I'm not sure what you mean by hazy look, though. I applied one of the ICC profiles (either from TFT Central or DigitalVersus) and in my case it didn't seem to make a large difference one way or the other.

I use these settings:

Picture Mode - User
Brightness - 17
Contrast - 50
Sharpness - 5
Gamma - 2
Color Temperature - User Define (R100, G94, B99)
Hue - 50
Saturation - 53
AMA - High

If you don't want to buy a hardware calibrator, try these websites:

http://www.photoscientia.co.uk/Gamma.htm

Also don't forget to re-calibrate Windows ClearType font settings.

Did you change the gamma to setting 2? For some reason BenQ's default is way off and you lose contrast in the lower shades, at least on my 2 units you did.

I'm not the most technical person so that being said...
I have a Korean 1440p 27 IPS monitor, that i liked except for the black levels. I wanted something bigger. I bought the Benq off of amazon because i can return it if i dont like it.
So far I like the monitor. The black level is really good and im happy with the colors. I have it hooked through DVI because the display cable is only 3feet. I play only games. Divinity, skyrim,bf4. At this time I havent gotten a color profile i'm completely happy with. I can make games look great..then webpages not so great. I'm still playing around with color profiles..ETC. I do not have hardware calibration. i found the input lag to be just fine for bf4. BUt I was already used to IPS lag so if your coming from a TN panel this might not be what u want. I hooked up my xbox one and it looked fantastic on it! Crisp and clear. Much better than any tv would look. The monitor controller is pretty neat and easy to use. The size of the monitor isnt quite as big of a jump as u might think. I had a 30' korean monitor i sold because it was just WAY to tall. This monitor fits nicely. Hopefully I can figure out a color balance without having to buy a calibration hardware. Benq doesnt market this monitor to gamers..but i'm not gonna win any bf4 tournaments even if i had a 144hz monitor. I don't find the input lag bad at all. If you have any questions let me know..

Scotty, are you using a dual link DVI cable? Because the 2560x1440 resolution of the BenQ is only possible over dual link DVI, not single link DVI. And if you use dual link DVI, you might want to try DisplayPort anyway, because it could possibly result in a better picture according to this user:

Assuming that it is not the subjective experience of that user, I'm not sure why the picture quality should be different, because the output should be the same, right?

Oh yes..im using the DVI. After another night of fooling with it I still cant get the colors right. I played Divinity about 2 hours ;last night and noticed my eyes getting irritated. I like this monitor's colors...I just cant find a setting that works for everything. A user posted some settings but that made the monitor look awful in my opinion. I did put the gamma to 2. Gonna play so more tonight. In the settings of the monitor it has these options to remind u to look away and stuff...so im wondering if this is a issue with this monitor? I hope not but if things dont improve by the weekend i'm sending it back.

If your eyes get irritated, the brightness might be too high. How high do you have it? If you lower the brightness, it will look awful at first, but you get used to it eventually. So maybe try that.

I agree. If you're used to the amount of light IPS pixels let through it's going to take time to get used to lower brightness levels. I've adjusted the panel settings for some people at my work who were complaining about eye strain. At first they said they hated the way their monitors looked afterward, but I told them to give it at least three days for your eyes and brain to adjust and they thanked me when that time was up.

I'll have to check my brightness when i get home...One thing I noticed...one some youtube videos I could see like discolored blocks in some white/brown areas it was weird. I dont remember seeing that on my other monitor. I love the size..it will upset me if i cant get this color right and i send it back. Nothing else out there...and i got sick of waiting.

You may have gotten one with the banding issue that is more pronounced if that's the case...

I second or third the advice to use DisplayPort if your source offers it. Next try HDMI (so long as it's HDMI 1.3 or later so that you can do full rez at 60Hz; older HDMI will only run at 30Hz), then DVI. But prefer DVI over older HDMI versions.

However, @Scottyl39, it sounds a bit like you are chasing the calibration. By this I mean that any calibration procedure involves tradeoffs. It's always possible to calibrate so that you optimize one use-case (a particular game, or webpage) but perhaps at the expense of other cases. That's even the right thing to do if the monitor is only being used for one primary task. Most of the time, however, people use their monitors for lots of different things, and the best calibration will be a compromise that handles all of them as well as possible.

For a specific example of what I mean, I ended up tweaking the RGB values in user-mode color temp too far, trying to get the best possible result from:

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/contrast.php

Here's a tip that perhaps others might find handy. You can reprogram the outer buttons as:

1: sRGB mode
2: Low Blue-light Mode
3: User Mode

I also adjusted the brightness down to 25 for all of the modes, and then did the fine tweaking of gamma, user-set temperature by tweaking the individual colors, etc in user mode. Once done, you can easily switch back and forth between sRGB and User Mode to compare what they look like. For example, I'd tweaked the color channels for R and B down a bit too far trying to maximize contrast in gradients, and that helped me notice that pure greys were starting to get a touch of a greenish tint. Ended up with 97/99/97 rather than 95/100/96.

Switch from user mode to the preset sRGB mode when you run into a page, or video, or whatever where the color balance isn't looking right.
If you like the preset sRGB mode better, that's a pretty sure sign that your user-mode calibration has been tweaked too far out of balance.

one of the things I noticed is that if I use the nvidia control panel I can turn Digital vibrance up a little bit it helps with the colors but I think it overrides the ICC profile? Right now I'm using display lag. Com recommendation and their color profile but it still seems like there's a haze over white scenes or backgrounds.

Well I reordered one tonight hoping the have worked some issues with the banding out, guess I will see on Friday.

The colors aren't off too much from the factory. With an i1 display pro I just had to set it to gamma 2, turn the green down a bit and the red down a notch and that's about it. Color didn't change much after calibration. Don't even touch the contrast setting.

On what setting? Srgb? standard?

What is a 30fps video shown a different monitor supposed to show?! And how can you distinguish input lag and pixel response in a video? Sorry if I sound harsh, but I'm a big VA fan and have seen this monitor myself. Those videos do it no justice.

I'm just glad we finally HAVE videos. This thing's been out for a while now, and no one had posted any gameplay videos. These videos make me want to buy the monitor :)

The upper monitor is noticeably slower than the bottom one (things happen a split second after the bottom one). Maybe this is the just the way the monitors are hooked up that is causing that?

I have had this monitor for about 1 month and I absolutely love it. Fantastic monitor.

Love playing games on it.

Not sure which BenQ the upper monitor is, but it is certainly NOT the BenQ BL3200PT. The bottom - and faster - monitor is actually the BenQ BL3200PT. Just look at the location of the BenQ logo, the power button light and the bezel width. The bottom monitor also has the 'CAD/CAM Monitor' label on the left and if you look very closely you can see the BL3200 logo in the upper right corner as well, albeit unreadable.

Maybe the upper BenQ monitor is the IL420 or T420? Looks identical:

http://www.benq.com/product/DigitalSignage/il420/
http://www.benq.com/product/DigitalSignage/T420/

What's also nice to see, is the huge difference in contrast. The bottom BenQ BL3200PT blows the upper BenQ (IL420/T420) completely out of the water. It does have a slight yellowish tint in the videos though, but that's probably due to poor calibration, because I haven't noticed that in everyday use with my BL3200PT at all.

Hey all,
I just received my BL3200 tonight and spent quite a bit of time looking for dead pixels (none found thankfully). I haven't done much adjusting of the picture quality other than turning down brightness. But on one of the sites I found to help check for dead pixels I noticed an artifact that shows up with some of the tests with a type of grid pattern I've never seen before. I took a few pics. This pattern is only seen using the patterns on "gdargaud.net" dead pixel test. It is most noticeable if I select the bottom two backgrounds with magenta in them. If the browser is less than full screen I'll see a grid like pattern almost bleeding around the browser window and it moves with the browser. With brighter Windows backgrounds it is not too visible but with darker backgrounds or those with gradients it shows. I took a couple of pictures.

I tried this same pattern on my previous monitor (Samsung 275T) and there is no artifacting. I can make the artifacts lessen and ultimately disappear by lowering sharpness. At the default of 5 they are obvious, at 4 less so, at 3 nearly gone and 2 or less they are absent but then the text is fuzzier. Changing between displayport input and DVI, changing contrast/brightness, AMA all have no effect. If I lower the resolution it goes away.

I can't seem to reproduce this effect with other pixel testers and with normal pictures or windows, none of this occurs. Can anyone try this pixel tester, click on the "magenta&green" test but make sure the browser is not full screen and see if any artifact is noted? Is this something to be concerned about?
Thanks for any help,
LZT.

Do none of you get bothered by this type of artifacts? I got mine last month and having trouble getting around this issue. It is not a minor artifact that only occurs with this particular LCD test, it happens a lot in other occasions when the pixels arranged in certain patterns. For example it will happen if you play some console emulators or DOS games with scanline filters turned on, or some older games that renders alpha blending with pixel skipping patterns. (Bugs me a lot when I'm playing those games, entire screen just suddenly flashes)

The fact that the entire screen flashes when switching to the pages like this http://www.gdargaud.net/Hack/DeadPixel/GreenMagenta.html makes me think it is some pretty serious defect with this monitor. First I thought it is my particular unit's problem, but after replaced and tested with two other units, and most people here seem to have the same problem, it looks like this model just has the problem inherently. I've never seen other monitors having this issue, so I don't know why this one does, maybe the issue with its firmware or circuit board or something, no idea...

Do you guys think this issue should be exposed more to the manufacturer or retailer, so it can maybe get fixed and people can be aware of this before buying it? Or does this seem common to you guys?

If it only happens on certain website/tests then most ppl will never see it and thus won't care.

I've used this monitor for several months now and I have never noticed these artifacts in everyday use, except on certain monitor test screens, so it doesn't bother me. But I agree with you that it is probably a defect or a firmware bug. I can imagine that it must be very annoying if it is noticeable in programs that you use. The emulator you speak of, is it ZSNES?

I've been reading a lot about black crush in VA panels. Does anyone who has this monitor have issues with it (loss of really dark detail in the center of the screen when viewed head-on)? Should I be concerned about it?

OK..I struck gold! After trying 3 different ICC profiles and different settings..I found the tomshardware to be the single best setting! With no ICC profile...I erased all my color profiles in windows...then rebooted. It used the default profile that benq provides. Some of the others said to lower brightness to 17 which makes the monitor look like theres a haze over the whites. After playing skyrim and bf4 last night..im a happy old gamer!! I can say that the black level destroys my ips korean panel!!

Use what works best for you, but I must say though, brightness at 88 is extreme. That corresponds to a luminance of roughly 260 cd/m2, whereas 120 cd/m2 is recommended by TFT Central. I'm not surprised you previously said your eyes got irritated. I'm not trying to scare you, but I don't think such a high brightness level is good for your eyes over the longer term. I would seriously consider a lower brightness setting to prevent problems. As said previously, it will look awful at first, but you get used to it quickly.
