Why no love for LG G3?

The G3 is already making my life a little easier with it's remote control feature! Does anyone know if the G3 is going to get Android 5?

IMO, LG should have done it differently with the G3.

Released it in Aug / Sep, the one year anniversary of the G2, but that would allow them to use the Snapdragon 805 instead, with the much better 420 GPU. And also kept the display at 1080p. Those two changes would have given it beast of battery life, and be a super fast performer, and not outdated until the next Spring when the S6 and M9 are released.

I do like the the size and shape of the G3, how they made a 5.5" screen sized phone in such a small footprint is outstanding.

But I have to keep my One M8 just for the battery life, this M8 gets AMAZING battery life, 6h On Screen time, and it rivals my old Galaxy Note 2 battery life, which was a beast on long battery life.

My HTC One M8 converted to GPE, is my fav smartphone of all time, super fast smooth, AWESOME battery life, great stereo speakers, beautiful design, etc...

I did use an iPhone 6 yesterday that one of my staff bought over the weekend and you would never know that the specs are lower than a comparable phone running Android. It was very smooth and much quicker than I expected. I don't care for iOS so I won't be buying an iPhone but I can see where someone who just wants to turn it on and use it would really like the iPhone.

That is what I am looking for in Android. The Moto X had a great user experience even though it had relatively low end specs, except the battery and camera held it back. Same thing with the Nexus 5. My current phone, the OnePlus One, is the best Android phone I have owned to date but still has its issues due to a developing CM. I have high hopes for the Nexus 6 and will probably just wait for it to be released before doing anything else.

The G3 just seems to be a great compromise between the Nexus 5 and Note 3/4 so I wanted to see what the experience has been like for current owners.

If Android spent more time on optimizing what they have on the software end of things and concentrating on the user experience rather than throwing in more bloated apps and carrier crap then they would not need the raw horsepower on the hardware end to keep things chugging along.

I much prefer Android as I use my phone more or less as a portable computer but do tire of the extra crap that comes on most phones.

I don't care what the specs are but do care what the actual user experience is.

You need to rephrase that... it's not "Android" that is throwing in all of these bloated apps... it's the manufacturers that fork Android and morph it into what THEY think is better. If Samsung, LG, etc... would leave Android alone and just produce a phone with MINIMAL additions, they would be fine.

Example?? Go pick up a Moto G. LAST YEAR'S Moto G is as fast/smooth as an iPhone 5, yet costs less than $200.00 BRAND NEW. Reason? Virtually STOCK Android.

Yeah, that chart is missing some important data, such as the much larger battery on the 6 Plus.

Besides, specs definitely don't tell the full story between the iPhone 6 and the G3. I've used both extensively (the G3 more than the iPhone 6, for obvious timing reasons), and it's clear that you give up some things to get others, in both cases. The iPhone is practically faster, and doesn't have that oversharpened look; I'd also pick it over the G3 for photography any day of the week, since it has better colors and low-light performance. You mainly pick the G3 because you want a high-end, 5.5-inch smartphone in a form factor that won't strain your hands too much.

Wife has the iPhone 6,it isn't any faster than the LG G3 that I use, maybe the apps for iOS8 are more "streamlined", but it doesn't feel any bit faster than the G3. The camera on the iPhone 6 does seem to take better pictures in low-light situations, but it isn't remarkably better than the camera on the G3 and yes, I've used both as well, guess it's just a matter of opinion. Both are great for what they do, if you have a 5S then I highly suggest you get the iPhone 6, using my wife's 5S compared to the iPhone 6, BIG DIFFERENCE. That is all.

Another vote for Just Say No to TouchWiz..

I think LG just does not advertise like Samsung and HTC and Iphone.

I never use the remote on my HTC M8... It only allows me to use station names like 10.1 but my TV wants 10-1! I can change up and down, but I can't jump to stations so I just use the remote for the TV....

Tell me that the knock feature isnt friggin brilliant!

I am trying to remember the last time I used the power button on the back of my LG G2
Surprisingly enough the volume up and down are easy enough to feel and use to adjust when listening to music with my phone in either front or back pockets.

I am quite tempted to pick up the G3, just for the better antennas. VZW UDP tethering ftw!!!

That being said, I heard the G4 will have a scroll wheel as the power button... would be quite interesting...

One issue that I noticed today while driving to the airport, using Waze (Navigation), full screen brightness + charger = warning of over heating, which reduced the brightness of the phone. Not that big of a deal, but rather annoying.....

I have had my G3 since July, when it was first released. I love it. Granted, it is my work phone, and as such, gets different usage than my personal phone. I would say that I get excellent battery life out of this phone.

I just tested it, I got 11 days out of standby mode, where all the phone was doing was pushing email. 11 days. My Galaxy S3 is lucky to get 1 day.

Simple, price holds it back as with other flagships in the no contract segment. It's a small, limited market catering to enthusiasts, not helped by a growing number of less expensive yet very capable alternatives.

I would bet that more go for the contract phones than they do no contract

Anyone know if the LG G3 will get Android 5.0?

It will

That probably explains it ... that segment is shrinking as more look for less costly upfront alternatives. I often ask myself 'some still buy on contract these days?' Phone prices on flagships remain expensive thanks to carrier subsidies.

My guess is for every G3 there are 100 cheaper models sold. The G3 is loved until sticker shock sets in.

In the US contract phones still reign. Many carriers are going for the phone lease model though

I can understand that. I'm on a no contract Framily plan w/ Sprint and bought my G3 off eBay new for $400 and sold my old HTC One M7. I couldn't tolerate the sticker difference of going back to a subsidized plan.

I have had a lot of phones over the last three years and have had the G3 since launch.

I think it is the best phone available today. I haven't really found any flaws in it. Big screen and yet the size of the phone is the same as a mid size phone. Super clear screen, pleasant UI to look at as well as reasonable fast (for a non stock android phone). Speaker phone works very well, battery life in stand-by mode is insanely good.

I plan on keeping this G3 until it breaks. I see nothing that could possible compete with it anytime soon.

The reason I went with a (used off of Ebay) G2 over going for a newer G3 is that the G3 had worse battery life.

http://www.gsmarena.com/battery-test.php3

Like, nearly twice as bad for web browsing, which is a lot of what I do on my phone. While mine had a few issues (dust at the proximity sensor, one stuck pixel), I got the seller to knock the price down to 159 total for my G2.

I don't know how long it's been used, but my G2's battery life is indeed quite amazing. It's a good phone. I'm also not in for the super high resolution, high horsepower phones. As long as it can make calls and I can use the GPS, browse the internet (and check mail and whatnot) and listen to music on it... it does all that I want it to. I have a Vita and 3DS for gaming. The fact that it lasts DAYS off of the charger through light, moderate, and heavy use is great. I can understand wanting resolution and horsepower to an extent, but the main reason to have a phone is to have it with you and ready to rock whenever. Battery life concerns makes things very constraining. It depends on how you use it I guess. I just like not having to worry at all.

I feel the same way about my G2 vs the G3.
Now the G4 on the other hand, looks like it's going to rock my wallet :-p

The reason the G3 was impressive was the screen resolution, the better os experience and laser focus which Samsung managed to add on their devices. However unlike sammy which makes up tons of marketing videos on youtube and tv and other media, LG doesnt support their product in marketing. In addition LG only makes one or two products in their phone portfolio (only ones I and im guessing most people know). They dont make a family of products like Samsung As a result Samsung takes the bigger share.

Wow, cool thanks for posting link, I just submitted my request for that promo! Hope they deliver!

Got an email from LG on Sep 30:

Congratulations! Your submission for the Free LG G3 Battery and Battery Charging Cradle Promotion has been successfully validated.
Please be on the lookout for a shipping confirmation email* letting you know that your battery and cradle are on their way.

Got an email from LG on Sep 30:

I got that exact e-mail on the 30th as well! I haven't had a situation where I needed a replacement right away on my G3 but I've gotten close :p This will be put to good use:D

I might sell the battery and cradle then put that towards the Zero Lemon behemoth.

LG's skin is nicer than TouchWiz and also lighter, I really don't mind it.

Also, EVER PHONE NEEDS TO COPY KnockOn. Sorry for the caps, but it really is the best feature to come to smartphones in a very long time.

Agreed. On the subject, I'm almost certain that Cyanogenmod had the knock feature about 4-5 years ago with a ROM for the Evo 4G...anyone remember if that was true?

Double tap any unoccupied space on your home screen to knock off too, in case you didn't know.

LG knock is kind of neat but requires a minimum of two knocks whereas I can just hit the home button once. I like the transparent overlapping window multitasking more.

I had the Evo 4G and ran a bunch of roms, I don't remember any such feature. There were some kernels that enabled swype to wake on the capacitive buttons but IIRC they were for the Evo 3D only.

I found a decent priced white G3 on CL, but guy said it's from Verizon. He said it works on ATT though ? But how's that possible ? Verizon is CDMA and ATT is GSM ?

And can the Verizon version be rooted and have full TWRP Recovery installed just like the international or T-Mobile version ? None of that stupid Safestrap weird crap like ATT phones need to go through

VZW VS985 "works" on ATT's network only insofar as D985 only supports ONE of ATT's spectrum bands (LTE Band 4) AFAIK

http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/att-lte-verizon-lg-g3-t3005780

"LTE" or rather "4G LTE" is a GSM technology. But G3 like many flagships handsets (Nexus 6) has a crapload of radios (LTE/CDMA/GSM/WCDMA) in it-the carrier SKU unlocks whichever bands for use.

I presume the barely-network-support makes the rest of your questions academic...but there is indeed TWRP for G3:

If you are going to use it on the AT&T network, make sure to get the D850 model so it can utilize all of their bands.

The D850 model I think is the official ATT version ? I don't want that due to the crappy locked down bootloader, you need to use some crazy method to install TWRP Recovery, and sort of like Safestrap crap, I HATE. I just want true root, and true real Recovery. No Safestrap type of garbage hoops to jump through.

Thx. Guy said it's VS985W

G3 has the carrier-specific SKU idiocy (and frequency band locking) common on all phones aside from the Nexus line.

VS985 is the VZW variant. D850 is the ATT variant. D851 for TMo. D855 is the EU international variant.
