Last week we told you about a deal Bungie was offering that gives last-gen console owners a copy of Destiny for their current-gen consoles for free. Well, there's a catch, that deal only applies to digital downloads of the game. That means that hundreds of thousands of people that pre-ordered a physical copy of the game (before this announcement) are just screwed.

For our fans who will be entering the Destiny universe first on PlayStation®3 or Xbox 360 we have some great news! For a limited time, whenever you buy a digital copy of Destiny, you will be able to download the next-gen version within the same console family for FREE.

Pretty sure it said "digital copy" from the start. Still, that is pretty shitty, they should still give people who ordered a physical copy on PS3/X360 a digital copy on PS4/XOne.

Oh, I know it said digital copy, but that deal started a week ago and they've been selling pre-orders of physical discs for months. I totally agree that people with proof of purchase should be able to get a next-gen copy as well.

How are people screwed? They bought a product before a promo came out, why are they entitled to it? I cant go back a year later when a console price drops and get my money back.

Ding Ding Ding..we have a winner.

Thank you!! Just like I no longer own an Xbox One that had by copy of Dead Rising 3 on it. Shouldn't I get a free copy to the PC version? no.

These idiot game companies are cutting their own throats, the morons. If you can't afford the PS4 and have a 3 then duhhh, get the PS3 version. But don't expect someone to give you a "free" upgrade to the next system you buy!! I

ts bad enough we have real life welfare entitlement issues now people feel they are entitled to the next platform version of a game???? WTF! You want us to give you a WIC card with said game too???? Best part is its BUNGIE's fault.

Even when HD-DVD died a horrible out-spent-by-Sony death, a few major publishers offered a Red for Blu promotion you had to pay to get the Blu-ray version of your HD DVD movie. It was only $5. Why lose Money Bungie, you dipshits?!

Hire me, you will make money and I will fire dipshits that come up with these promos. :p

No one is ENTITLED to anything. That doesn't mean the people that buy physical copies of their games aren't getting screwed on the deal. The deal is valid through Jan 2015, plain and simple, anyone that buys the game on disc is screwed out of the deal. If you buy Destiny tomorrow, the digital version of the game gives you the free upgrade, the physical disc version doesn't.

Please, either of you care to explain to me how that isn't alienating your customers?

Ok Easy.

It is called offering an "incentive" to your customers to purchase one method over another by making it attractive. They make less money off the physical copy so why not offer something additional to the "digital" version to make the more profitable version more attractive to the customer. Honestly if more companies did this I would be far less Anti DD than I am. I have a history on this forum of hating digital only games and absolutely preferring the physical copy every time. For the first time someone has offered something that made me pause and think "do I really have to have the disc this time? or should I suck it up and get the digital so I effectively get 2 games for the price of one since I have multiple PS3's and a Ps4?"

Offering incentives to your customers to get them to essentially "upgrade" isn't alienating your customers in any way.

Excellent. Let the hate flow through you.

Seems pretty obvious to me that the upgrade would be digital only when I skimmed over the news.
And I'm pretty fucking stupid.

glad I did not buy it anyway. PS4 and Xbox One still sitting here being good for nothing

When I first heard about this I assumed it would have to be digital only because of DRM. If they put codes into the game that you use then those that don't have both systems would just sell the codes for cheap. Or somebody buys the game on the old generation, uses the code on the new generation then turns around and resells the last gen version. Either way you end up with only 1 sell but two people owning the game. For the previous things like this you had to trade in the last gen version of the game to get the current gen. Given they let you keep both, making it digital only would be the only way for them to make sure that they are only giving this deal to a single person and not creating a way for them to only make money on half of the sells of the game.

I guess I have two questions,

1) why buy both a PS4 and Xbox One if you had zero plans on using them
2) what exactly are you waiting for if you have no use for them as both have plenty of use right now.

Had you bought it, you would have had a use for either system so your logic makes no sense.

man I am glad I didn't buy that gas for my car as it is sitting there unable to be driven right now due to not having any gas. that would have been a waste to put gas in it.

Really no reason to buy new consoles unless you plan on using them, at least wait for hardware revisions if you have no plans to use em.

Wait

So I've been getting screwed every time there's a sale or promotion on products I haven't purchased? I'm so angry right now I'm going to post about it on the internet, where every one cares.

IMO companies should be legally required to offer the same introductory promos to customers who pre-order a product. One pre-orders a product in anticipation of its availability/release date.

It would be a disincentive to offer pre-ordering in the first place, which is utterly ridiculous in the current era of media-less gaming, and enforce fairness. What you might call pre-ordering is known to gaming companies as free interest on money paid for nothing.

Same here. But, I thought of it this way - buy digital now, grab the physical disk in 2 years for $5 in the used discount bin. I like having physical copies, but it's hard to turn down the game for 2 systems for the price of 1.

This reminds me of some experiences I've had with online companies.

First, my webhost. They had a deal last year that granted a lifetime discount to new customers. I found out about it, asked to get that discount and got rejected, then asked that they close my account so I could open a new one and get it. They purposefully dragged their feet on closing until after the deal had passed (their support was usually super fast, so it was pretty obvious) and left me in the lurch. Don't get me wrong I understand the concept of luring new customers but...I was a long-time customer with a proven track record, I just consider it a poor business practice.

Second, my usenet server. I paid the regular price for a while, then saw a deal. Felt bad asking to get it so I put it off...but when I did ask, they immediately gave me the new price. Years later there was a crazy sale with fantastic prices and I asked again, and I ASSUMED I'd have to close my account to get it (see above). In fact, they upgraded existing accounts if asked to this new customer deal and even though I had deleted my original account (in anticipation of needing to) they restored everything AND gave me the better price. That's service.

Maybe I'm finally getting old but I like to have brand loyalty and I expect to be rewarded for it or, at the least, not be punched in the nads for it. The second you start segregating your user base, for whatever reason, is the second you stop being top dog in my book.

Bungiee didn't have to do this. They decided to be nice, and did, and now everybody's is jumping down Bungie's throats because they didn't include discs in the promo.

I'm afraid it's you getting old. Having brand loyalty towards any publicly traded company is like trusting a mad dog, you can never know what it's going to do. Sure, the developers may want all sorts of great things for their customers, but they don't run the show. In the past, CEOs had responsibilities to the shareholders, the employees, the customers, and the public in general. Nowadays, it's solely to the shareholders, usually quarter to quarter, which results in often sociopathic behavior as any means of increasing the profit. You'll notice now rewarding customer loyalty is often the exception instead of the rule. Long term loyalty isn't easily translated to numbers shareholders will appreciate in the short term, so it's often a secondary priority compared to quarter to quarter profits. If a small act of generosity gets an immediate payoff, it's worth it. If screwing them does also, that's worth it too. It's only screwing people so bad it hurts short term profits that's not worth it. Granted, my take on publicly traded corporations is cynical, but by all means feel free to prove me wrong.

for-profit corporations are not motivated by "nice"

This is the first time I've ever opted for the digital version of a new release console game when there's a disc version available (not counting $5 specials on PSN sales etc...). I did it purely because I could have it on both last gen and current gen PS systems. Like you I'll probably just pick up the disc when it's in the bargain bin just to have it.

Honestly, if they did this all the time, I'd be more inclined to buy digital. That said, the only other way they could sway me would be to actually sell the Digital version at a reasonable discount considering the reduced cost of distribution and the fact you can't resell it.

If it was offered for physical versions it would be easily abused.

People buy physical game, redeem the digital one on their xbone/ps4, turn around and sell the physical game on ebay.

bam, you just got a new game for <10-15 bucks give or take ebay fees/shipping.

That i swhy it's only offered digitaly, they can tie both to your account and you can't resell them, so the only people that benefit are the people that actually buy it.
