What do you guys think? Will a new design change people's opinion about Google Glass?

US Patent D710,928S was granted to Google engineer Mitchell Heinrich on August, 12 2014. The patent appears to be focused solely on a new version of Google Glass that looks a lot less obtrusive than the current model and may finally remove the robot stigma that some Explorers have been feeling out in public.

Looks like the ridiculous non-prescription BCG frames hipsters wear. IOW, perfect for Google Glass.

So now the new generation of "glassholes" can bland in with the current generation of hipster douchebags... Yay!!!!

We all know that eventually the tech will become small enough and cheap enough that eyeglass makers can incorporate this tech into their glasses. Within 5 years Im guessing.

Can you imagine, eventually Google Glass will be able to shoot 4k video like it's nothing

I didn't think they could make them uglier.

I was evidently very wrong.

Yea, except for that flashing red "recording" LED, no one will ever know you have them on :D

Buddy Holly approved!!

I bet this will make ALL the difference with the general concern people have about personal privacy as you're standing across from a glasshole.

You guys are kidding yourselves if you think privacy concerns are what's actually holding Google Glass back. If/When they make them fashionable, the *shallow* general public will eat it up.

Heck yes. Let's see...right now designer glasses with $1 in materials sell for $150 or more. Pretty sweet margin on COGS right there.

Google Glass offers a product that actually does something besides protect your eyes from sunlight and can bring the price down to within that range it'll be a no-brainer. Right now it's still in the stratosphere.

I never understood why they put everything on one side, when they could have split the battery and electronics to both sides and made it far less obtrusive.

The current version looks more like a Borg implant than a pair of glasses. Why make it self-contained if it's not clip-on?

I wouldn't pay a grand for them, but it's a step in the right direction. I really don't get all the anti Glass sentiment. There are plenty of small wearable cameras out there that most people won't recognize as a camera. If the issue is wearable internet access, it's just not that different from using a phone.

Fashionable and well under $1000 (unless they're designer frames with prescription lenses, then 1000 isn't totally insane)

Ultimately, I don't think it's shallow to want your $1500 toy to look more like glasses and less like something salvaged from a Borg.

Which is exactly what I'm saying. Once they look "cool" they WILL become mainstream. Hell, I'd buy a pair if they didn't make me look like a Dragon Ball Z character.

That is what I am afraid of. That last thing I want is every Apple fanboy and wannabe deciding it is cool to become a glasshole.

I think they know their target audience too well. This will make them an even bigger seller.

Google Glass is a good idea, but I don't know how much I like the way it's implemented. How much control do I have of the data that gets sent back to Google servers? If it's like other stuff - not much. I'm still a control freak. I like to know where my data is and who is looking at it. I KNOW Google is looking at my email and my history on search (and other browsing). I allow it for access to the services. Google Glass data is a lot, though. Plus, I don't like putting cameras in front of others. GoPro users are usually fine - they are recording their activities and take off the ridiculously huge camera when they are done. Glassholes keep them on so everyone can see them and make a big deal about it.

No they won"t.

The general public can't afford them. the general public won"t even keep their regular glasses and contacts prescriptions up to date.

The general public that does were glasses mostly hates wearing them and sure as hell wouldn't wear them by choice if they could avoid it without major compromise.

The general public that doesn't wear glasses still remembers calling their schoolmates "4 eyes".

Only techi and Apple hipsters will go for this, the snob factor, Sales will stay small, prices will stay high.

If my glasses can't replace my phone and my phone does everything my glasses do and more, why in fuck would I want the glasses?

Google Glass has a chance in one area, the business world as a piece of utility tech, not as a fashion statement or everyday useful piece of wearable tech.

And though some of you see this as inevitable, today's society is not going to go for the idea of working every day with people all over the place who all have the ability to record what you are doing and saying at any given time. Particularly in the US, a society of lawyers, wana-be lawyers, etc.

So true. It's times like this I thank my lucky genes I have 20/18 (L) & 20/15 (R)
I've never had to deal with prescription glasses and the such, unlike the other 4 members of my family, mwwuuahaha I got all the good genes! :p

Looks like Google made a deal with Luxotica. Those look like Ray-Bans.

I started to argue this as I was a big Ray Ban wearer for years. Before I started my argument I popped over to their website as my last couple pairs have been Maui Jim's. I didn't realize Ray Ban got into trying to bring back the 1950's BCG's back...meh. I don't care who's name is on them..Ugly As F...

Utility tech. Put those in a warehouse or something. You know where things are, where you're going next, locations of other forklifts, where your material is coming from, going and the path to get there. Building plans, electrical plans, plumbing. You know where things go, where valves are, where breakers are to control what. Nearest switch, where the path of the cable goes, etc... It has a possibility to be huge in maintenance and things of that nature. Say you find a bad outlet. You want to shut off power? "Find breaker for outlet" and it tells you location and which breaker. Can even show you how to get there. Lots of possibilities that I hope come to reality.

Public stuff? I can see some use. It can be beneficial for a lot of things. Just see a huge market in the above stuff. Plus, industrial stuff can be ruggedized and price jacked way up!

From the drawing, it looks like the projector covers the entire lens instead of a small box, which would be a huge improvement.

Google is making glass to get even more data from you, not to give you access to more services. Google is even licensing data from other companies so they can access your customer info from other sites and correlate it to their own.

Yea, I know. Google sells information...

Technology would be good elsewhere, though. With a closed environment. In house information so it's all contained.

+1 to that and my point exactly.

People are no more comfortable standing in front of a glasshole they don't know than they are with any other hipster-douchebag sticking a mobile phone or camera in their face. I don't want that kind of invasion of my space and/or privacy.
