California lawmakers are about to make the state the second in the nation to approve a bill that would require all phones sold to have kill-switch software installed for owner-user safety.

The California bill would be the second state law in the country mandating a kill switch. The first was passed in Minnesota in May. There are also two bills in the U.S. Congress that are similarly seeking a mandated kill switch.

If this shit gets passed on a federal level and goes unchallenged how long will it be before they begin pushing for kill-switches in vehicles and other consumer goods?

Shutting down phones isn't really that useful for abuse by the government. Why would you want to do that? All it would do is show the target they are being tracked and give them a head start in acquiring a new phone. So I am less worried about this. They already have and have been doing the real abuse which is the tracking and listening in on conversations that you don't know they are doing. And my guess is the government always had the ability to tell a cell phone carrier to disconnect an ESN if they really wanted to.

IMO the bigger problem here and the main place this could be abused is by carriers. Say you buy a phone on contract and they start terming it as a lease. Then if for some reason you leave the carrier they brick your phone much like bad ESNs except now its can't be moved to a new carrier or MVNO.

Well, if you root your car.....

Cover up/prevent exposure of police brutality/murder, government crackdowns on protests/free speech, anything anti-corporate...

So how are they going to know what phones are the ones to shut off? They have to have a target. Unless you think they will cut everything connected to 3 towers. Ya that won't trigger looting in LA.

They want to harden control against technological innovation. This is just another step in staying ahead of the curve. Its the same as mandated 911 locating on ALL phones, Amber alerts, etc. Its another layer.

You people are paranoid. Everyone knows the chemtrails obscure the signal anyway - there would be no way for the gmen to specifically target your phone.

THIS. Any time there is anything going on all they have to do kill your phone and you can't even call for help. Let alone use your phone to report anything that might be considered and abuse of power by the government.

This is exactly what they will do. You really think they care about looting and rioting? Hell no they don't! The police are regularly told to stand down when riots occur.

You know how people can buy these jammer gizmos, jam everybody's phone in the restaurant or movie theater. Do you really think that a portable kill device will not pop up on the aftermarket. Great idea, kill all the legislators phones first. Nice job you bunch of CA, pinko, village idiots. A State that is 25 billion in the red and they come up with this crap. A 12 billion dollar bridge that is structurally unsafe and of course "lets build a train to nowhere."

Some cars have already have this capability. Every ONStar equipped vehicle can be remotely shutdown. There are a few cases where law enforcement had ONStar hit the kill switch.

With the way things are going I can see a day when they will start shutting cars down for a few unpaid parking tickets. :(

On-Star is something easily removed since it's integrated into the stereo. I'm talking about a kill-switch built into the ECM on every vehicle sold in the U.S.. Something that's not optional equipment or easily bypassed.

this.

And false flag mind control alien illuminati!!!!!!!

This is a good idea, tin-foil-hat-wearers can suck it.

Read the description of the bill. The killswitch is a authorized user, user-end feature that only the authorized user can decide to use, or otherwise opt-out of. This isn't some government conspiracy to control your device or shut it off whenever they decide (and on a side-note, any government desiring to do that is probably already far above the law with whatever they want to accomplish, having a law to allow it would be pointless. That, and you're delusional to think that there aren't already methods of shutting off communications if they wanted to, outside of a kill switch).

Can it be abused? Probably. But then again, so can many other things that are already implemented in technology.

Yes, there are already solutions like google device manager, or other 3rd-party solutions like Cerebrus, etc. But the technologically illiterate probably don't know they exist, much less know enough to properly use them. So having a built-in solution is a good idea where the user can call their provider (or otherwise initiate) and disable their device.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the carriers who are pushing for these laws. I think it has nothing to do with theft/security.

This is a horrible idea.
