Microsoft is handing out free phones to people that are being laid off in China? I guess that beats what you get in most places when you are laid off...nothing.

As a result, Microsoft is giving free Nokia handsets to up to 300 employees per day if they apply for the company’s volunteer resignation package, the First Financial Daily reported Wednesday, citing an internal company email. Microsoft said the phones would be given on a “first come, first serve” basis, the report said.

Microsoft is basically saying..

And get a new $130 Nokia Lumina 630!!

Why would the richest man in the world have to lay off anyone? I'll keep my $76,000,000,000 and not a penny less! Then again maybe he got to $76,000,000,000 by laying people off.

It is not about the former CEO of the company. It's about the company's responsibility toward it's investors (which include small investor like you and me). Microsoft has to ensure it's profitability. Laying off non-necessary employees sure is a good way of reducing expenses.

Nokia phones? HUGE LOL!!!!!

Guess they want to kill two birds with one stone. :D:D

Because just what I want when I'm fired is something that costs money to operate and now is worthless for resale.

It's called severance and it is much more valuable when it provides money or benefits for a period of time to find a new job.

Most tech companies offer severance pay for a variety of legal reasons.

Overseas (especially in China) the packages vary greatly ... in Europe employees can get 1-3 years of pay (depending on the country) ... in Asia the rules vary greatly by country (and nothing, or almost nothing, is usually an option)

Wow the blind hate on this board is starting to get ABSURD. Do any of you even have a Nokia Phone? Have any of you even used something like the Lumia Icon?

I went to a Icon win8 phone from a note 2, and before that a droid x, and before that a galaxy s3 etc. and the Build quality of the phone is better than any samsung model I've had and the OS is just as good as android if not better.

Im getting sick of this crap on a 'tech' site

I have a Windows Phone, HTC 8x to be exact. And while the layout and functionality is good, the lack of apps and waste of time animated transitions between screens is annoying.

Well, with the flood of Nokia phones soon to saturate eBay, any one of us could get one for around $5...

[H]ot|Deal subforum is about to explode!

Have? No, used, yes.

Honestly it's clunky and ugly. Nokia hasn't made a top tier phone in a decade. It isn't blind hate, just reality. Nokia got bought because they couldn't adapt to the market, blackberry walking the same road. If Microsoft really wants to make win phone work, they gotta get Samsung and htc back on their side. The os is fine, the hardware blows.

Clunky in what way? I have never had an issue, the build quality is better, more metal as opposed to cheap ass plastic samsungs. The only android that matches the build quality is the HTC One M8

You do know that metal has more of a tendency to bend/dent than plastic which will usually rebound to its original shape provided the impact isn't enough to break it.

There is nothing wrong with the plastic on most cell phones now days. The plastic is much higher quality (a different make up) then you will find in cheap plastic junk.

And yes, I do have a Samsung phone.

When I wanted to try something new, being a fan of MS products, I took a chance on the Lumia 900. First I got bit by the data transfer bug where I had to wait 3 weeks for a patch, then I got bit by horrific battery life. I struggled with that phone until my earliest upgrade period and switched back to an iphone. I tried to sell on craigslist for $30, no takers. That's how horrible their hardware is.. a 16 month old phone was garbage as compared to a 2 year old iphone getting $300+. The lumia was heavy, poor image quality and no where near as refined as the competition. Not going to get into the abomination of the Microsoft app store. And yes I realize I was on a first launch phone, however in the months after, they made the phone nothing but worse in their software/hardware updates. This is why Nokia is a brand no one gives a crap about. Too late to the smartphone party and way behind in delivering a proper customer experience for those who try it.

I promptly took the Lumia to my local outdoor shooting range and got some of my stress relieved by making it disappear.

What good do free phones do if you now have to save your monies until you find another job and thus are inconvenienced that you can't afford a cellular plan? :D

I miss my 8X. Excellent phone. My wife wanted an Android, and there was a BOGO sale. So, I got one, too. I'm upgrading to the Lumia Icon at work this week from an iPhone. :D Excited.

Windows Phones are excellent phones. I'm hoping market share increases so that more apps are developed. Great phones, Nokia have good build quality, WP8 is excellent. I have nothing bad to say about the Windows Phone except for the lack of support with apps. But, the whole why develop for something with no users vs. selling more if there were more apps. Can't have more apps without more users. Can't get more users without more apps. :/
