Got a 6990 from a friend full of dust and cat hair. I completely cleaned it and it runs hot. Using speed fan one core is 92C and the other is showing up as 0. Is there anything I should check? I used Antec Diamond 7 as the replacement TIM and replaced the thermal pads as well using some 3M VHB tape it looks the same and is only slightly thicker. 1mm maybe?.

Well as far as the second core not reading you have to disable ulps (in afterburner or something similar) to get constant temps readings. You might not be making good contact with the cores or something similar. Not sure about the antec diamond 7, but some thermal pastes take a couple days to burn in to get maximum cooling performance. If it is not too much trouble you might try taking the heat-sink off and make sure that you are getting good pressure on the cores.

You may have been right. It didnt look like the 2nd core was touch. so I took off the tape I used and temporarliy used TIM. I turned on crossfirex and the second core appears. Its running at 100C+. The first core is running at 68C. I dont like this one bit.

I know this card is designed to run hot, but 100C is just ridiculous.

Forgot to plug the fan up after taking it apart. Its now running at 41c and 0(I guess the gpu turns off if not needed). But it turns out that the thermal padding I used was not allowing the gpu and heat sink to touch.

I'm guessing that the gpu is idling then? That sounds correct if so. You should put some load on the gpus and see what temps u get.

Furmark crashes when overclocking at 900/1250 but Fire strike runs pretty well. Does anyone know the thickness of the thermal tape used on the card? I was thinking either .5 or .7 but I just wanna be sure before I pull the trigger. That stuff aint cheap.

Be careful too when tightening the screws and such. On a 6970 I had, I tightened it I guess slightly too much, and heard a gurgling / hissing noise for a few seconds.

Afterwards, the card was running at constantly above 95C.

Seems I damaged the vapor chamber cooling. o_O

I've been carefully tightning the card and heat sink together. I've kind noticed that they dont sit flush together. I am worried about running the card since the second GPU runs at 90C when playing games like Bioshock infinite. Im thinking I may need to go on a search for a ARCTIC Accelero Twin Turbo just to ease my worries. maybe I can find a used one. Im also kinda wondering if I would get better preformance with two 2GB 7770's.

Does anyone happen to know what size of screws this card uses? Even knowing where I can get just the screws would be helpful. I seemed to have misplaced on that belongs to the metal plate on the bottom of the card.

neobits seams to have the twin turbos for $78, but I have never shopped there, it looks like frozen cpu has a full waterblock for about the same price (here). Of course then you would have to setup a water loop :( or :) depending.

Would you mind taking a picture of the piece you are talking about? If you have a similar screw I bet you could go to a local hardware store and fine something that would work. I found this disassembly guide (Here)

Ill take a look at prices when I get the chance. I really do want this thing quiet. Its so loud. BUT SO DAMN STRONG.

Anywho. Actually if you look at the first picture from that guide you'll see the screws to the backplate I'm looking for. Heres a closer look from my camera.:
