Building a desk for a friend. I work 65 hours a week so progress will be slow. Wasn't planning on making a proper build log but thought I might share the pictures anyways. I got lots of cool ideas. let me know what you guys think.

No joke! That has to weigh over 100 lbs already.

How do you plan on finishing it? Fiberglass? Laminate?

lol its probably closer to 200+ lbs but its designed to not move for a reason. lots of shifting weight. you'll have to wait and see on the finish. :)

The first couple pics had me confused and thinking this thing is built for a war zone. Once I saw the frame completed I was impressed. This looks really cool. Can't wait to see the rest of your ideas implemented.

what is the slider and pole for? I though they were on the top and it was for a monitor mount, but looking at it closer it is on the side and horizontal....

looks like you know what you are doing

Thanks everyone, been very busy will update as soon as I can.

essentially the desk allows you to kick back in full recline mode using the built in foot rest 5 ft keyboard tray that will pull out 2 ft and the monitors will pull forward 1ft. that's the main reason for the triple monitor stand. Pull all 3 monitors forward at the same time. also a big reason the desk needed some heft.

I've been thinking about a way to be able to play while in such a position comfortably.... this may be the ticket!

Either the rear beams are overkill or there isn't adequate support bracing to handle the load in the center front of the desk. If you were concerned about the table tipping forward or backwards then you should have made the base solid instead of hollow.

I'm thinking it is good. Solid multiple heavy boards of stud wood on the rear and everything is boxed up with good bracing on the legs and where the top weight is carried. Table top is not overly long and most weight does seem on the rear.

nice job! Me instead of 4 2x4 in the legs at the back I would have remove the 2 in the middle inserted a bag, and after it's done fill it up with sand. which is far heavier. But if you already have the wood...

Its an idea ive had for awhile as I have been a triple monitor user for many years up until I recently got a LG 34um95 so I just use the one monitor again and love it. however im building this desk for a friend for his tripple monitor setup that he has not had the desk space to set it up. he currently uses a broken basic 1990 half inch partical board desk. he has no idea what this desk looks like that im building him. he is going be be very surprised

I put all the weight toward the rear of the desk it balances pretty well though. its feels very solid if i pick up one side it doesn't twist or anything. im not the slightest worried.

yep its very stable and solid and would take heavy leaning on an expanded keyboard tray with monitors foward.

The wood worked out perfect and they are 2x6 it does need to be somewhat moveable.

Wow that is going to be one awesome and solid desk! Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
Thanks :D

Aside from the Jap tools that's pretty nice.

Thanks, I have other tools too. I have really grown to like Makita though. my drill is very light weight and has lots of power. I really enjoy tools that dont fail.

mind blown

:D

and what do you use? milwaukee? porter-cable?

I know your not asking me but I have several dwalt drills and routers, milwaukee grinders, makita drills and sanders, black bull floor drill press, husky 60 gal air compressor, thermal arc welder, and some Chinese branded forging tools, among hundreds of others im no brand loyalist I buy what gets good ratings and has been proven to not waist time and money.

The slides and board are just sitting there not mounted yet. There will be another plate that goes on top.

Your idea of using slides to pull or pull the monitors is amazing. I've been looking for a long time for something like this.

What's the length of those slides fully extended and the weight capacity?

Great Job!

slide info http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008SOFQQI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 started with 8 inch switched to 10 inch to get a little extra and not have to fully extend. i have 14 inch slides for the keyboard tray when I do that. they extend twice the size and load up to 100lbs ( they hold much more then that though) you can also lay them flat but extended this way they have a little more give so I like to use them vertically as shown.

Not sure how you have the footrest secured.

If it's just glued/nailed and screwed I would suggest reinforcing the underside somewhat or you'll eventually break it off (even as sturdy as the construction is, the footrest will bow under pressure over time).

Some strategically placed 1x1 stock glued and screwed on the underside around the joined perimiter will help prevent bowing or dettaching from the back

You may also want to put a small leg or something under the middle to prevent bowing in the front too, as that's a fairly long and (comparatively) thin piece of lumber. It doesn't need to be all the way up front and visible. Set it about a quarter to a half way back and it should just disappear from the desk's profile while still giving support.

And since I didn't mention it, nice desk!

Thanks man, its screwed on 3 sides with 7 L brackets and about 30 screws. its good for 100+ lbs the brackets will break before the board bows its also going to get further treatment just wait and see :D

yeah i buy whatever has solid reviews and is cheapest, basically bang for buck like any good capitalist should. just thought it was funny because most "american" tool brands are now made overseas, and some are even engineered overseas. i have a makita drill set that i love as well, been very happy with them for 2 years now.

great work on the desk so far, can't wait to see what you have planned. although a bit overengineered for my tastes, it is definitely a gorgeous desk and your friend is going to love it. :)

Sounds like a plan! :D

I'd like to see this keyboard tray. :)

My monitor arm is long enough to extend my primary monitor in front of my desk, but I have not found a solution to comfortably use the mouse + keyboard in a reclined position.

I'm thinking the tray should be essentially a sliding (and maybe position-lockable) desk extension = wide (at least 31" wide) and stable.

I can accept that I might not want to recline during a gaming session, but I'm generally working, so:

One of the main advantages is that a fully-reclined sitting position...is nearly just laying down, which is not nearly as bad for the posture (kyphotic spine, tight hip flexors, anterior pelvic tilt, etc... just poor for mobility and health overall).

Sitting is a pain...

So I'll be watching this desk project.

Thanks guys,

the left side is going to get redone but this will give you an idea what im going for.
