ASUS Announces ROG SWIFT PG278Q Premium Gaming Monitor

Even if this TN is as color accurate as an IPS which I highly doubt, the viewing angles and gamma shift are going to ruin it for everybody, especially at 27 inches.

Anyways, if this monitor gets measured with a very low input lag, what does it mean for the 1440p IPS monitors? Maybe it's the scalar since the Qnix monitors have no input lag without a scalar.

Has the AG coating's severity been confirmed yet?

In My Humble Opinion a TN monitor over 200$ is always overpriced, even if with 4k resolution and 240hz.
If only they would produce a 120hz Gsync IPS/VA 1440p, maybe it could worth 800$, but not with a TN panel.
I wish Eizo will make a 27'' 1440p Foris one day, i'm tired of 24'' 1080p displays!

If I were to spend 800$, I would buy or an Eizo EV2736W or LG 34UM95, if I can't have everything I prefer to give up to the 144hz than to the image quality.

Image quality?

The amount of FoV movement blur at 60hz (on a 1ms TN, let alone an ips) is not even definably a solid grid resolution to your eyes during continual FoV movement (movement keying, mouse-look pathing, etc).
You don't play a still screen shot.

The amount of blur at 120hz on a 1ms TN is more like a strong soften blur effect during your continual FoV movement flow. It still makes the viewport "fuzzy" or "fuzz out" with the strong soften blur like effect during virtual camera movement - blurring out high detail textures, depth via bump mapping and other shader effects, and any in-game text/signs/placards/nameplates, etc of course.

IPS monitors have their advantages but lack all of the advanced gaming tech. 60hz monitors have double the FoV movement blur of 120hz (tn vs tn) + worse due to ips response time which means their blur (of the entire viewport/game world) goes well beyond "fuzzy" to being a smear during continual movement keying and mouse-look flow pathing of 1st/3rd person games. They also lack upcoming g-sync tech and backlight strobing options, and they have a 60fps max viewable motion slices ~ (motion articulation-flow, and animation definition) ceiling due to their refresh rate. Even the overclockable korean 120hz one's (a guaranteed 120hz oc one can be pricey) response times are slow so that they blur a lot more than a gaming by design (1ms TN) 120hz-144hz monitor (more to the smearing blur of a 60hz 1ms TN than the soften/"fuzzy" blur of a 120hz 1ms TN), and obviously lack g-sync and strobing tech options.

Regarding color and shift, yes my 27" samsung A750D has some TN "Shadow" at the top, a darker band which I notice when I stand up (whereupon it brightens), but it's really not noticeable in gaming. That narrow band uniformity "shadow" (more like a band that goes from zero/none to darker dimming in a gradient to the top end) is a tradeoff though admittedly. I can see the gradient if I pop up to standing and back down to my seated position over and over, something I obviously am not doing while gaming. Since I direct view the monitor at the best angle possible it's not a bad tradeoff to me considering the gains. Do note that people often allow direct light sources to hit the faces of their monitor so are polluting their color space regularly anyway, even on ips with matte/ag. A lot of people don't keep the lighting scenario the same between day and night, allowing it to shift as well - which changes how your eyes and brain see brightness, contrast, and saturation.. just something to consider when hearing from color space and calibration purists.
The samsung I have is notably lush and vibrant in color for a TN. As long as this rog swift is vibrant and lush and not pale like many high hz tn's of late, it will be great for gaming in that facet as far as I'm concerned. It is a dedicated to gaming monitor. I have a 2560x1440 ips to go next to it for everything static (desktop/apps). Again tradeoffs..

Would a 2560x1440 27" VA with 120hz-144hz input and g-sync/ulmb similar to the eizo 1080p FG2421 be great? Well the 24" one is like $600 already, and some suspect they used leftover/lower grade panels from their higher priced line so might have a bit of a screen lottery there. I would love to have these as an option (at what price?), but it doesn't exist. I'd love to see what a 27" 2560x1440 120hz-144hz input oled (w/out "burn out" of colors issues) with dynamic hz and backlight strobing could do too as long as we are wishing.

TN is TN. With bad viewing angles gamma shift and all. It can't be any different, suck it up.

Why all this hate for TN? Yeah IPS looks better and the viewing angles aren't as good but TN panels can still look pretty good too. My HP 2509B is a TN and it looks great with very good blacks and contrast. If they can get the image quality of my puny $200 HP but at 2560x1440, 144 Hz, 1ms response time and G-Sync, I think that would be one hell of a monitor. Ive never cared that much for viewing angles because I dont use sit off to the side while I use my computer. If Im always only using it looking head on, why do I care what it looks like 90 degrees off to the side? I don't get this thing where "I won't buy it if it's TN". Some guys are making it out like a TN panel looks like an old black and white TV from the 50's. TN panels can look outstanding as well. Yes IPS and VA are outstanding'er but you could possibly be getting 90% of the image quality of an IPS/VA but with twice the responsiveness, zero input lag and 144 Hz that you can't get (at least not yet) with IPS/VA. I'm not saying the Swift is God's own monitor cause we haven't seen reviews yet but I don't think you should just write it off as shit just because it uses a TN panel.

The viewing angles are the only thing that truly bothers me about TN and those have improved a bit over the years. I'm waiting for reviews on the ROG Swift to see if it's an issue with a panel of this size.

I think people who speak nonsense about TN in a thread about a gaming monitor should have their posts deleted.

make your own thread about how IPS is best and stay in there.

Pro IPS people always mention TN's color shift, but never mention IPS glow. Something that is a huge nuisance and just as annoying. IPS's really only strong characteristic is colors/viewing angles and is overall over-rated. I'd take VA's blacks and contrast and no IPS glow any day. If Eizo made a 27" 2560x1440 FG2421 with Turbo240 strobing, would easily be the #1 monitor. Since that doesn't exist, the Swift will be #1 for quite a while in the gaming world.

The only thing I couldn't stand about Lightboost TNs was the backlight bleed. Is that not a normal thing for the Asus VG278HE? I had two of them and they both had that. I even had the feeling on the second one the bleed was growing... Was it just my units? Or was it related to the backlight strobe function?

If they hadn't had that... I never would have gone on my monitor "journey" and ended up with a damn Catleap (has very little glow... and I know bad glow. It's horrible. They just aren't all like that). I'm looking forward to a native 120Hz panel again... just not to have to rely on Toasty. I bet he looks forward to that too lol.

All of the new TN's have worse colors than the VG236H and Samsung 120hz monitors as well as grainy matte coatings. I don't mind sitting up straight to view a TN properly, but the fact that 3 & 4 year old TN panels have obviously superior color quality disturbs me.

I doubt that the PG278Q will look as good as the 120hz S27A750D...which was released in 2011 for 600$ while the inferior S27A950D was 700$ vs. 800$ for a 1440p TN with G-Sync and Lightboost.

Very true, those Samsung "Ultra-Clear" line of TN panels were pretty special. Not sure how they got such nice colors on those when everyone else fails. (Gloss helped but didn't do everything). Not only that, they had some of the thinnest bezels I've seen. Got them down to 4mm with frame removed.

These were TN screens from 4+ years ago, which had better colors and smaller bezels than anything we have now ironically:

Yes, TN panels:

I absolutely loved my Sammy 750D, still have her as a backup for my Overlord. Best $399 tech purchase I ever made. If anyone wants it I'll sell for $499 :D.

If the IQ of the SWIFT matches this bad boy it will be an instant buy for me. If only Samsung would make a 1440p version of this we would be in heaven.

Has the AG coating's severity been confirmed yet?

Yes. Every reviewer has not mentioned it. The severity is zero.

Same with the evil TN viewing angles and colors. They're so bad on the SWIFT that no one who has actually seen it has bothered to complain.

That is just horrible!!! I can't wait to get it :D

What I don't understand is why gamers are content with TN screens with poor visual quality, if there was a greater demand for IPS / VA for gaming too, manufacturers would produce them.

lol

IPS tech is not there yet. If Asus/Sammy/Dell/LG/etc. could mass produce 144hz IPS gaming panels they would.

Seriously, on a display that we have been waiting over SEVEN months for and Asus has been constantly hyping & teasing for over SEVEN months, why OH WHY would they ship the first batches to the US on a slow ass boat?

If any product deserved air freight it was this one, for fucks sakes they should have charged us the extra standard early adopter fee if the concern was the shipping cost eating into the profit margin.

I am torn with reconciling the upper management logic used here as waffling between bad joke and flat out inconsiderate incompetence.

lol do you know how much air freight costs? :p

Well gee lets see, Korean dudes sitting in their mommys basement are able to ship 27" displays air freight ALL DAY long, and every time Nvidia & AMD release new GPUS they STUFF the gullets of planes with product..... I am sure I could think of about ten thousand other examples of high end product being affordably shipped by air freight if I put about .00000000000000000001% of my mind to it.

There is an amazing invention called a cargo plane....and when you couple the technology of a cargo plane with the bargaining power of a billion dollar tech company launching a new product....affordable shipping economies of scale are possible.

Hehe.

But seriously, there's a reason (reasons) those Korean "dudes" are selling their stuff on Ebay and not through retail channels. GPUs? The high-volume budget stuff goes by boat for sure. I'm sure they can make their money back air-freighting Titan Blacks and 295X2's all day long, considering that they can ship 4 of them to 1 PG278Q. Among leet gamers this is going to be a hot commodity but they're still not going to sell very many relatively.

And besides, what are you going to do, buy some other manufacturer's QHD 144hz strobing G-sync monitor? :D

Ahh, I was waiting for that 4/1 contention....well heres the final dooze....if air shipping was so unprofitable they WHY are they air shipping to the other markets? An before you say its more expensive to fly stuff from asia to europe I want you to think long and hard about ecobomies of scale!

But you know you touched on the exact reason. They have no competition so they said fuck em let em wait. If benq had a similar display hitting the market asus would have air freighted these babies. Yet another example how the consumer gets shafted without competition

Eizo air freighted the FG2421 when they came out. The date of manufacture on my monitors was only three weeks before I had it in my hand, no way they went by boat.

BenQ or Eizo? :)

I agree, shipping by boat seems to be retarded.

Yeah... it's BS. They are having production issues or something.

Given that the other announced G-Sync monitors, like the BenQ XL2420G, aren't out yet, it's probably safe to say there's some sort of production issue with G-Sync in general.

Nvidia in general seems to have really bad production problems.

I regret not pre-ordering the oculus rift. I figured the Swift would have handled all of my 3D needs for 2014.......not 2015

Benq confirmed that the XL2720G is pushed back to September!

I emailed my retailer about the availability of this monitor and he replied they have no idea when they might stock it.
This means that the monitor is at LEAST one month away from becoming available to purchase. Usually they can provide you with info about an upcoming product within about 2-3 weeks before it hits the shelves, and the timing is usually the same as in US or earlier. Unless US gets special treatment for no reason.

If I had to guess we won't see these readily available till early-mid Sept

There's really not a lot for them to produce. G-Sync modules use FPGAs (and memory, of course) from another vendor.

Unless NVIDIA dumped FPGAs entirely to roll their own silicon, I don't think production issues could be a valid explanation for the delay. The delay is, of course, awfully frustrating, and I wish both NVIDIA and display vendors would be more forthcoming with information. From the outside, G-Sync looks like nothing more than vaporware, and it's strange that NVIDIA hasn't really worked to counter that perception at all.

Air shipping to other markets? Where? (Lol I'm actually interested, not just arguing here ;))

i have the DIY kit in the ASUS. It aint vapor ware trust me. Its awesome and another reason im jonsing for this display.

I was able to get SLI properly working with GSYNC with the latest NVIDIA drivers. I am a lot more excited for this monitor.

With previous drivers SLI+GSYNC either crashed the game, got less than 1 fps, or had strange stuttering.

Wow really? I hadn't heard that before. That would seriously limit alot of setups taking advantage of this monitor.

Does G-Sync help for the microstutter that seems to be the bane of SLI? Thinking of getting this display and another GTX 770.
