Windows 7 Support Ends January 2015

It's just mainstream support. Basically warranty, design changes, features added, no-cost incident support will not be available. We still get security updates until 2020 which is all that really matters in the grand scheme of things.

Well, I'd say its a compelling argument to upgrade to 8, but XP hitting EOL wasn't a good enough reason to upgrade to 8 either.
Hell, buying a new pc isn't a compelling enough reason to switch to 8, it made me install Linux on my laptop, which ran more like Windows then 8 did.

Why are operating systems turning into cell phones? theres a new one every year or something with like 1 or 2 "new" features

That was quick. A lot of companies finished XP to 7 migration in ~2012. At least this will keep the IT folks busily employed.

Only 5.5 years of mainstream support + 5 years of extended support after that?!?!? Boycott!!!!!!!1 Install linux!!11!!

Yes! Install Linux! Let the NSA label you a radical and future terrorist!

Until they fix the GUI, we'll be sticking with Windows 7.
If Windows 9 has the same problems as 8, I can't see microsoft dropping support for 7 since too many businesses will still be using it.

Son of a.... ! Dammit Microsoft!

On the other hand, isn't Windows 9 supposed to be out early next year as well (theoretically)? Maybe MS will have seen the light and have made a return to the classic desktop! (Ya, I know, wishful thinking.)

There is a lot more than "1 or 2" changes from windows 7 to 8. A more rapid development cycle also helps prevent another XPocalypse.

Don't follow this much I see. They are already moving away from metro centric on desktop for next major release.

What is up with all of the "Windows 7 ending support" crap all over the Internet lately. No one did this for XP in 2006 when it's main stream support ended.

Several rumors. One, that enterprise versions will allow you to use a somewhat classic start menu (remove tiles and metro apps). Two, that the start menu will return, but look quite a bit different.

I saw this on CNET this afternoon. I bet that MS will extend the support date like they did with XP. Vista, OTOH, no one will miss that. :p

I wonder after all these years, SP2 for Win 7 was never released.

2014*

I'm less worried about this is windows 7 is pretty solid as it sits and actual support/updates for it will likely get extended since Microsoft hasn't got their stuff together and 2020 isn't all that far away if you think about it.

What is your problem ? All Windows releases work in same way.

Vista released in January 2007, mainstream support ended April 2012 (5 years and 3 months), security support ends April 2017 (extra 5 years).
W7 released in October 2009, mainstream support ends in January 2015 (5 years and 3 months), security support ends April 2020 (extra 5 years).
W8 releases in October 2012, mainstream support for 8.x ends in January 2018 (5 years and 3 months), security support ends April 2023 (extra 5 years).

So please, explain to me how can anyone be surprised by the fact that mainstream support for any Windows release (except XP which got it extended) ends after 5 years and 3 months after the release, and security updates end after 10 years and 3 months after the release

Seriously, quite a few are still doing this. This transition seems awfully quick; 7 to me is the perfect OS, don't really see any need to upgrade at all.

No need to, they are not going to release new features for W7. Security support is there until 2020.

But in theory they can release new features for Win 7 until Jan. 2015. But I guess they have little reason to do so because MS is encouraging their customers to get onto the latest platform, which happens to be 8.1, but in a few years, they'll say 8 is crap and try to force us to go to 9. Rinse and repeat.

I'm still on XP but i can't stand some of the features of windows 8.1. (metro is such a deal breaker) FFS, why do they make this such a pain.

Quick?

How long have you been on 7? I have been on it since 2009. I waited until 8.1 to run that, now I have no 7 systems I use daily, only 2008 R2, 2012 R2 and Win8.1. We are already putting a few 8.1 systems out there to interested people in the org. Good way to gauge our next move, which will probably be 9 on a wide scale.

I foresee another XP situation in 2020...

As far as I'm concerned they are pushing people to stop using Win 7 by breaking it. Recently went back to win 7 from 8.1 and the taskbar sits on top of everything like even fullscreen youtube movies and there's no way to fix it. Microsoft needs a good punch in the throat. Both win 7 AND 8 suck now.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Guess I'm getting old....5 1/2 years fly by now. TBH don't remember when I switched to 7.

Based on MS's past track record with new DirectX versions: no, probably not a chance in hell.

And given the industry's track record if Win 9 launches with dx12 we wont see dx12 games until win10

There's a leaked screenshot of the start menu that was supposed to be in 8.2, not sure if that was pushed or not for 9. I don't recall if it was confirmed, but it matches the description of a hybrid between Win7 and Metro. It was basically the left hand side being win7 and the right side (Win7's "control panel, my documents, etc) being small metro tiles.

Everyone should be on Windows 8.1 anyway. Windows 7 was never the future, it was always Vista with a new hat. It was a Malibu Stacy doll meant to keep people dumb and trick them off of XP.

Start menu or not, it's not hard to go to www.classicshell.net and get a better start menu than the one that comes with XP, 7, or 8.2/9 (whichever).
It gives you way more features too, so stop the bitching and get the actual improvements we should have had since Vista.

Better task manager, SkyDrive/OneDrive, synced settings across devices, it's good.
Metro is basically dead anyway. I haven't had to look at Metro for months. And if I go back that far, it's only for a few seconds I had to look at it at all to begin with.

The modern UI is far from dead. On the desktop I understand that there's been a lot of resistance to it and many have ignored it, but the modern UI is still central to Microsoft's tablet and phone efforts. And even on the desktop I find I'm using more and more apps for the things people use them on tablets and phones. YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, casual gaming, eBooks, etc. Sure, there's not a lot in the way of solid productivity apps but the modern version of Office will help with a big hole there.

Likely I would go to 9 anyway, having skipped 8. Still, it's galling to have a product fairly purchased, and still perfectly useful and fine (as was XP) taken away so the profit stream can further enrich the too wealthy. It should be criminal to endanger customers who purchased your product in good faith. Why not come out with an expiration date from the start? If I'm buying Windows 7 for so much for this many years, I'd appreciate this information up front.

That is not a Microsoft of Windows thing. Look at the Linux kernel, look at the Linux distributions. They update constantly, with very little end-user experience changes.
That really is a difficult point to defend. You want a secure OS and no updates? That doesn't work. Not in the Windows world and not in any other OS world.
