GTX 880 and 800 Series to be More Powerful But Cheaper than the 700 Series

The TV doesn't have Display Port? The 1.3 spec handles 4k @ 60hz no problem and is already available on the 600 and 700 series.

You mean DP 1.2 can already handle 4K @ 60Hz. DP 1.3 will allow for 4K @ 120Hz and 8K @ 60Hz.

Also DP is mostly a monitor/laptop connector while HDMI is meant specifically for TV's. There's no reason why a monitor can't have HDMI, or a TV have DP as it's up to the vendor to support it.

I haven't gotten the TV yet, I just ordered it and will arrive shortly, but no, it doesn't have DP which sucks, as most TV's don't even have DP apart from Panasonic.

This! So much this. Remember when the 4870 came out vs. the GTX 280? The 280 was a bit more powerful but it was also twice the price. They drastically cut their prices to remain competitive.

i remember summer 08 like it was just yesterday. according to my newegg history i paid 309.99 a piece for my 4870s. the gtx 280s cost me 649.99 each before nvidia authorized the $150 rebates. the 280s however weren't just a bit better than the 4870s. i remember them being a good deal faster. the 4870 was the first single chip to be able to handle crysis at 19x12 with high shaders. the 280 was the first single chip to be able to do all high settings at 19x12. a pretty significant feat for the time. the gtx 260 delivered the same performance as the 4870 so its $400 price tag was easier to swallow, though i don't remember if there was a rebate for them as well. the radeons didn't achieve performance parity until the hd 4890, but by then all single gpu cards were under $300.

If anything id think they start charging more, i mean look at that 3k card they just announced !!

PS: Something I have not mentioned anywhere: 880 is an Enterprise Edition with 8 cores, the normal (Gaming) edition will have less.

Just saw this press release today, and was wondering if it was the same enterprise HPC w/ARM cores you found earlier..

NVIDIA GPUs Open the Door to ARM64 Entry Into High Performance Computing
NVIDIA today announced that multiple server vendors are leveraging the performance of NVIDIA GPU accelerators to launch the world's first 64-bit ARM development systems for high performance computing (HPC)...

Go drink up some fresh coffee SoL, and find us some more good 800-series rumors/info.. I'm jones'n bro! :D

AMD 7xxx series did not significantly improve on performance/price.

That might be but it moved the 7750 and 7770 to previously unseen TDP. Same for the 750 / 750 Ti, Maxwell and all that. I am surprised the market is not all over them -- a very little engineering could add a nice passive cooler to them. Heck I am sorely tempted to get a 750 Ti and an ancient HR 03 and see temps. Remember this: " they ran the HR-03 passively without a fan on a nVidia 7950GT against the stock cooler and it performed shoulder to shoulder with stock cooling." the 7950GT was a 65W TDP piece and the 750 Ti is only 60W or so it's claimed.

So I'd be happy if the 8* would be same performance lower wattage.

I can't see maxwell NOT reducing the TDP landscape. I just hope Nvidia prices their products linearly.

I don't think it will if the 800 Series runs on 28nm. The architecture gives them a 30% leeway in either power consumption or performance. Besides the low-end cards the power consumption would probably climb much higher on 28nm than existing 600/700 cards in the performance market.

Again all hearsay and if Maxwell really isn't due for another 6 months then what's the deal with all these rumors lately. Some are just flat out stupid like "800 series to be more powerful and cheaper". Yeah, how many times have we heard that.

Cuz "800 series to be less powerful and more expensive than 700 series" would be a total downer for everybody? :p

FWIW, I disconnected the fans on my 750 Ti and it ran at 80-85C and started throttling clocks. With stock ACX fan setup it runs 52C max (1400/3300 memory). At some point I'm going to remove the HS and check out the thermal paste situation and see if I can add pads or paste to the memory chips, and may try running passive again.

Galaxy is the only company that I am aware of that is doing interesting things with the 750ti. They have both a single slot and a low-profile dual slot. TBH, I was a little surprised nVidia went with Kepler for the GT740. Using a 750, a little down clocking and some tweaking and they could have had a sub-40W card. Passive, single slot, low-profile, all easily possible. Looks like it will be up to community members like melk above to move things forward.

I actually just picked up a 750ti, obviously not an 8XX series card, BUT, Maxwell just the same.

I've been in this "game" a long time and this is the first card since the GeForce 3 series to truly impress me with performance vs price.

Just two weeks ago I sold my GTX Titan, so I know what "performance" feels like. The 750ti was a stop-gap purchase for me, but I might just keep it and use it until a serious release comes along. It's just that good.

Outside of crazy AA settings, I can max every game I've thrown at it and never fall below my acceptable FPS range.

Being it's size, TINY, price, LOW, and 60 watts of power draw... Nvidia has impressed me. Very nice demonstration of technology and it's evolution.

I'm very excited to see what the 8XX series cards bring to the table!

^^ Just wait until you try overclocking it. :D

The 750 Ti is a little beast, and it's also all-kinds of fun to tweak with. I popped a Zalman VF900-Cu and some ramsinks on one, and it's hitting some seriously impressive speeds.

Just flashed the BIOS on it to increase the power-target from 38w to 65.5w, and so far I'm at 1400 MHz Core Clock + 6.2 GHz Mem Clock. Not done pushing it yet, either :D

Due to launch in July.... maybe we'll see desktop maxwell then too?

Re 750ti, yeah they are consistently low heat and power overclocking beasts with great perf and low cost.... that's why I'm so excited for the 800 series.

I finally got my Jetson TK1 dev board and although it's not Maxwell, it's kind of weird to see full Ubuntu 14.04 running so well on a processor the size of a nickel.

If they put some decent ARM cores in their discrete GPUs, you could probably run some of these nicer indie games completely off the GPU w/ pretty good performance.

Assuming rumors about those card being cheaper are true can you even step up to it from 780 ti ?

i can step down to a 780 6GB now so i dont see why not
and i could always step to a SC or higher card likely at the same price or slightly more

The 780 Ti would actually be a great choice if it wasn't for the fact it costs and arm, a leg, and your newborn child.

considering the overclocking potential of the gtx 780 6gb i think one of these cards would be a better buy.

i think so to now
if i had the money for another 780 6GB i would step my Ti down and SLI up the 6GB 780s

we know nvidia is waiting to clear some inventory of titans black before authorizing vendors to sell 6gb 780 tis, but i don't reckon the performance delta over the gtx 780 6gb card to be worth the likely $700+ price tag.

so if it ends up being only 20% faster and $100 cheaper I think the buyers of high-end 700 series get screwed the most.

because they will be paying $399-$499 only for 20% performance over the 780/780t that they paid twice as much, lol.

but we still don't know which GTX 800 series GPU is NVidia talking about so who knows, lol.

if true, then the folks who are looking for an upgrade over their ancient stuff will be happy to buy them.

eh welcome to computing
thats really how it always was any way
i payed 500 in 2000 for my Voodoo5 only to replace it 2 years later with a 80 buck Radeon 9000 that was faster in every way
but it would be cool if 880 came out in my step up window
even still i might be able to sell my 780Ti to someone for most of the price of a 880
im ok with that too
there is also the chance that it will cause a sell off of 780Ti cards
if so again i could always pick one up on the cheap and still come out a head
