Another review of the Intel Core i7 4790K has hit the net today. This time around it is the crew at Overclockers Club doing the reviewing. For comparison purposes, you should read our Devil's Canyon: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly article if you haven't done so already.

Before I started overclocking, I had high hopes that Devil's Canyon would do much better than Haswell in the clock speed department thanks to the improved thermals and power supply work. Sadly, I found that its Haswell roots run deep and ultimately limited my overall clock speed to 4.6GHz.

So when is the tutorial coming out from Intel on how to hit 5GHz on air? Still seems like hot air (bad pun intended) to me.

Intel must have been doing their development in a drafty room this winter, during the "polar vortex".

another review confirming that the i4790K is NOT the OC monster chip Intel lead us to believe

It doesn't look that way, but it's still a damn good processor for the money, especially for a new build. I just pre-ordered one along with a bunch of new parts to build my first brand new PC in a LONG time. How long? I'm writing this on a Pentium 4 right now. Yup, THAT old. I just never had the money and other things took priority.

I'm more interested as to when the stores get the cpu? I want to build now. :D

Confirmed!! My 4790k, retail, tomorrow, 25/6...
Will post about the overclocking, on a Hero II board...my t-bird is so envious...

Same here. NE sent me the invoice today. I pre-ordered back when they first offered. Looks like shipments going out very soon now.

Yep - there are 4690Ks available here in Aussieland, on the shelves, awaiting buyers..

The Hero II(..err, that name..) mobo is due either today or in the morning, so I will be good to go, gonna use 16GB(2x8) of Dominator 1866, plus an 'old' HX1000. Really hope the retail chips do better than those flakey ES chips they gave reviewers. What mobo you plan on using Skott? I'll be posting o/c results for all ASAP as I think this is something many want to know about..Am actually looking forward to this...;););)

Mine shipped today. Unfortunately, it shipped from Newegg's NJ warehouse, and I'm in CA. Might not see it by Friday. I have everything else I need and I was hoping to do the build this weekend. :(

I still have a 2500K time for an upgrade? (just game on a r9 290 and do work with M$ Office)

I wouldn't, the performance difference isn't enough to warrant the high cost to upgrade. Unless you feel your pc is sluggish or if you aren't getting acceptable frame rates at your desired resolution I would just hold out till the first platform with DDR4 which may provide a more substantial upgrade. Hopefully Haswell-E will support this.

If the cost isn't a big deal to you or you simply have the upgrade itch then go for it.

Im looking to upgrade to an intel box from my current 8320 @ 4.2. Looking at different articles and reviews anything AMD cpu wise is nothing to write home about. Never owned an intel cpu and interested in seeing the difference. Will be selling mobo and cpu once I get the new stuff.

i have an [email protected] and moving to this 4790K, already had an asrock z87 extreme4 to drop it into, but i am waiting on the 2.80 bios update still, and my 4790k arrives tomorrow.

i will only be running the 4790k stock for about a month until i make my sister buy me an H105 for my birthday to cool it properly.

i am keeping my h100 on my 8120 for when i give it to my friend so he is not stuck with a stock cooler and i was planning to get a new AIO any way.

i will atleast be able to tell how it runs stock compared to the 8120 overclocked

Just as I feared, I won't be seeing my new processor until Monday. So what do I do? I order a Celeron G1820 as a temporary replacement. :D That one did ship from CA and will be here tomorrow. It'll let me finish the build over the weekend, and then when I swap in the 4790k, I can use the extra proc for a file server or HTPC or something along those lines.

My 4790k just arrived a few minutes ago. The long wait is over. Soon as the rest of my hardware arrives I can start building. :D

no 2.80 bios for my z87 asrock Extreme4, not sure if i want to try the 2.72 one or not with it i hate having to swap cpu's when it doesnt work lol.

4790k should be here within a few hours.

Well screw it, I bit. I wouldn't have but I decided to build another rig to figure out how to do a water loop and still have one in case theres an indoor flood or something. You never know with me. :D

I'll post some benches once I get it delidded and see what she can do.
