XFX R9 290X DD vs EVGA GTX 780 Ti SC (what to choose)

So right now TigerDirect has on sale an XFX R9 290X DD Edition for 449.99 with their discount and if I buy from them it'll be with no tax + free shipping. I recently bought an EVGA GTX 780 Ti SC from my local frys for about ~$788 (tax included). I'm on the fence about buying this and returning my EVGA card because of these two reasons:

1. About $330 difference
2. 4 GB of vram over 3 GB of vram (I'll be switching back and forth between a 1440p monitor and 4k HDTV)


I need a powerful card to hold me over until either AMD or Nvidia releases their top tier new card (guessing mid-late 2015) which supports HDMI 2.0 so my TV can run 4k @ 60hz. I'll also be buying the Asus ROG Swift 1440p monitor which supports g-sync and ULMB (ultra low motion blur). Is the performance difference between the 2 negligible enough when weighing the differences in these two prices (I do not plan on overclocking)? Does XFX have that bad of a rep that its not worth buying the card? Which one will have the better resell value? What do you guys think from experience/perspective?
 
$788 for a 780 Ti are you insane?
If it's just a carry-over card then get a 290 for less than half the price of the Ti and save the rest for the next series of cards.
 
Well the days of Nvidia pricing these cards well above what's acceptable are pretty much over. I feel AMD isn't messing around and will put the hurt on them. Next generation of cards will basically be serious competition on pricing and performance. If Nvidia downplays AMD at all, they are in for a rude awakening.

The next round of cards are going to be expensive from both companies. 20nm is going to cost us all no matter what flavor you purchase.
 
A 290x isn't really that far off from a GTX780 Ti especially considering it's $300 cheaper! If money were no object I'd rather have the 780 but since I have to work for a living, I'd take the 290x in that comparison all day long.
 
Both will cost more though IMO. AMD will be cheaper than NVidia surely but they'll be pricey too. Both companies seem to raising their prices on their products. The question is how long will this go on before the buyers say enough and refuse to upgrade?
 
At 4K resolution the 290X is faster than a 780 Ti in many cases. Plus at $330 it's a no brainer. Id still go 290X even at the same price.
 
Hmm. it seems like the deal for the tigerdirect was wrong so it'd actually be 479.99. If that's the case maybe I should consider going for a different branded 290x... And also I do think they will have their new cards on 28nm as well doesnt seem like we'll be seeing any 20nm soon.

On another note, why is there such a difference between the prices for R9 290X among different companies? They're all air cooled so why would there be such a variance in price (150-200$)?

If it wasn't for the mining boom/bust, AMD's cards wouldn't have been priced as high as they were, as you can see now, you can get 290's for mid $300's new, try that with an over a year old 780.... This year is a good year for not buying anything and waiting for 2015 and 20nm, unless like me you couldn't take 1440p with a 660Ti lol.

on that note what new technology would the next gen cards bring. i can hardly imagine the "next round" without some new technology. what would be the point of a new series if the something doesnt change technology wise. they have to "rebrand" some cards from previous series just to fill some gaps wouldnt think they'd have a whole series of them?

Well if Nvidia's new series is Maxwell then it's a new architecture.
I don't know what AMD is planning. Something with HBM probably.
 
Return it and buy 2 normal non X cards. The 290x is literally only 6% faster clock for clock than a 290.
 
For 4k gaming go with 4gb memory.
4k montior will become very affordable soon.

Depends on whether you want to have hassle-free experience when it comes to drivers and games or whether you are willing to mess around, install & reinstall drivers for specific applications, mess around with settings and fixes, and etc. Consider OC potential. EVGA GTX 780 Ti SC ACX cards overclock extremely well. 40% OC over the stock speed is pretty much guaranteed without a loud custom fan profile. I don't care what anyone says, AMD drivers always have a bug here and a bug there that affects a game or something else like video rendering, which was is case with 14.4 drivers. Its good when you have a narrow set of applications and games that work well on AMD hardware, like Mantle titles, AMD-optimized games like Deus Ex HR. nVidia is good for everything and more games are optimized for nVidia hardware, something AMD keeps complaining about. There is also PhysX vs. Mantle deal. For now PhysX makes more sense because even Mantle BF4 crashes more than DirectX BF4. Don't forget nVidia vowed to improve driver performance and load times with its Shader Cache. So far they kept their promise, but we only saw a single official driver performance. Upcoming driver branch that was used for Titan Z drivers is soon to be released for all other cards and contain more performance improvements.

In your case, the R9 290X deal is just a great bang for the buck and the GTX 780 Ti deal is a bit above average of what Newegg asks for the same card. I'd go with R9 290X if I were you, otherwise people would call you crazy. If I were me and had enough money, I'd get exactly the same card I got now :D. This baby rocks @ 4K downscaled to 1080p + SMAA in several games like Borderlands 2, Wolfenstein New Order, Dark Souls 2, Deus Ex HR - DC, Killing Floor, Witcher 2, Far Cry 3, and the other games, like Watch Dogs, AC4, PlanetSide 2, BF4, it plays great @ 1080p with 4x MSAA or SMAA @ 60fps+.
 
I forgot to add - get the Classified edition or GigaByte WindForce 3x Ghz OC edition or ASUS DirectCU2 edition cards because EVGA GTX 780 Ti SC uses reference power phases and VRMs, which aren't as good as Classified, Ghz OC, and DirectCU2 power phases and VRMs. Classified editions from EVGA are the best of the best and supposedly binned. Don't forget to get a backplate if you go with EVGA - it completes the look, the feet, the firmness, and the cool factor of your card.

would get this.....looks so bad ass!!!! im ok with my xfx 7970 card......but not impressed either......evga is king of nvidia cards due to there customer service...mut honestly i have no complaints with xfx either...i once thought i had a problem with the card...and they aproved an rma in like 2 hours.....it was just a driver issue so i never had to send it in...
 
That Sapphire R9 290 vapor-x is a beautiful card.

MonarchX mentioned a hassle-free experience, or not having one with the R9 290 / R9 290x. I must say that I have had no issues with drivers on either my R9 290s. I ran them in 2 different machines independently, one with Windows 7 and the other in Windows 8.1 for a while. No issues at all.

Went back to crossfire recently and have been very impressed moving to the 14.6 beta drivers.
 
Get the r9 290X, then when the nvidia 8xx series comes out get the 870 and sell your radeon on ebay ofc
 
I was looking for an upgrade to my 670 SLI but the only single card that's faster is the 780 ti and sometimes the 290x. But the 780 ti is upwards of $800 here in Canada.
