WD TV- Personal Edition allows users to enjoy a wide range of personal media such as photos, video and music on their home entertainment systems by supporting many file formats, including MKV, MP4, AVI, WMV, MOV and more. Files can be streamed from any connected USB drive like the My Passport® Ultra™ and My Book® product families, personal cloud and network attached storage drives like WD’s My Cloud product family, digital camcorder or cameras, and any networked PC or Mac® computer in the home.
 
About damn time.

I'm a HUGE WD media streamer fan. I've owned all generations of this media player other than last years watered-down version that I don't think ever became very popular.

Not sure what this "personal" thing is about but I hope it's high-powered like some of the others.
 
I'm curious to understand that as well. I see they dropped Netflix and Vimeo and added SKD support for custom apps. Otherwise it looks similar to me. Wish they'd add Amazon Prime but not a deal breaker. Looks like I'll stick with what I've got for now....unless I'm missing something.

Losing Netflix is a dealbreaker for me, which is a shame. My current 2010-era WD TV (called the magic box in my house) is used for an 80/20 split of Netflix/USB storage. It's been my favorite of this class of devices, and I've even convinced a few friends to purchase one as well.

I agree. Unless they add amazon, I don't see it selling as well as the old Live did.
 
There are custom firmwares out there that add in porn / netflix, etc. You can also use a proxy service and have your WD get all the UK content, etc etc.

You can also use https://wdtvhubgen.codeplex.com/ and add movie poster art, meta data, subtitles, etc to your movie collection.

I've installed a few WD Theater boxes into very high-end home movie theaters with $8,000 projectors and have taught these guys how to rip their bluray movies in 30 mins or less, generate the poster art, etc, automatically and it really does make for a very professional / polished UI movie experience.
 
Also, those into collection Blurays, do not buy new. Pawn shops have them super cheap, and eBay and craigslist is a great source for collections / lots.

I sold my massive DVD collection for around $4,500 a few years ago right as Bluray was taking off. Maybe a bit longer and never looked back.

I've tried a lot of different media streamers and none of them have the polish the WD has. It's a great companion for your legally ripped movies / MKV's you have legit movies to, especially with the movie poster art / meta data.
 
Sounds like I'll need to review the "fixes" within the new firmware update, prior to installing, in order to keep certain services.
 
If only WD TV Live could have Amazon Prime, it would be the perfect box. As it is, I use both a WD TV live for my streaming of local content and a Roku 3 for Netflix/Amazon Prime. I occasionally will use the WD TV Live for Netflix, but I like the Netflix interface a tad more on the Roku 3.
