Watch Dogs

I honestly wouldn't be shocked if there was a day 1 patch to fix some of this stuff. Those seem to be all the rage these days, after all. Something like that, plus a driver update from Nvidia/AMD would probably go a pretty long way.

In all seriousness though, there's also a decent chance that some of the problems stem from the whole shady, leaked copy thing. I'll reserve judgement until it's officially out on Tuesday, but my expectations are going to be a bit lower going in now.

Someone else suggested multiplayer files, since it doesn't work with the leaked copy.
Oh well, whatever it is... it's probably not important. :/

All I'm going to say is I'm personally enjoying this game. I have my PS4 copy arriving on Tues but I've been playing a bit on PC. Looks good enough if you ask me. Could have been better, sure, but this crappy cross-gen phase is hurting us overall. Plus this game has been in development for a while. I haven't run into any real choppy/stuttering/etc problems either, runs reasonably smooth for my 2500k and 670. I think most if not all of my settings are on high - 1080p.

The hacking is neat and while I'm sure it will be somewhat repetitive I enjoy finding different ways to approach things. I dropped a big metal crate on some dudes, hacked a camera that a guard was wearing to get his pov as he walked around, etc. I don't think I'll tire of exploding shit in people's faces either.

The leaked copy is 8 GB smaller than the retail copy.
So who knows what's missing.

"Leaked copy". You filthy swine!

So to those that have braved the high seas of piracy ... I take it the game is a mess?

And Language files often take up shit tons of space and many pirated copies of games are often international editions.

not saying piracy is a good thing -- but just imagine the thousands perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars people saved by not buying this cluster fuck of a game. Before the apologists come out and say "whaa piracy hurts the game and game quality". Can't argue that when it's not even out yet.

If this game flops it's because Ubi's butt wasn't able to cash a check their mouth wrote all those years ago. It's really looking like us PC players got a scraped together console port so they could check off some box on a feature list.

I'm reserving judgement - haven't played any copies from anywhere yet, I'm curious to see what it's like for my own eyes. Even though it's probably asking for too much, an already baked in day 1 patch for any of us who actually buy the game to fix all these issues would go a LONG way.

If anything, it might fill in for the gaping hole that is GTA5 on PC. Too bad though the odds of this game being mod friendly are very low. I'll wait back and see what happens on release day, fix crossfire, studdering, and all the other jacked up issues you have, and I'll probably give them some money.

Is it just me or does it look like just about all the tessellation shown in earlier trailers has been gutted from this game?

I pre-ordered after getting a chance to play. A small bonus is Lawrence Arms and Screeching Weasel, two of my favorite Chicago punk bands on the soundtrack.

Watch Dogs reminds me very much of Aliens Colonial Marines fake gameplay demo.
The lighting, tesselation is missing. A lot of low resolution textures as well.

Was pretty hyped about the game but I won't throw my cash on marketing like that. I vote with my wallet.

I don't see any obviously-tessellated surfaces in either shot. All the geometry looks pretty much equivalent to me.

Texel density actually seems like it might be greater in the retail shot, but it's not quite a fair comparison resolution- and artifact-wise.

I actually agree with you. I buy sooo many games. Have over 100 on Steam alone but for major AAA game releases now it's Russian roulette if you don't try before you buy.. I don't care if I pay $60 for a game that isn't any fun but runs perfect.. That's the chance you take.. But I'll be damned if I'm paying $60 for a game on a well powered machine that runs like I'm trying to play COD on a Netbook with anything but the lowest quality textures that are below console quality textures.

This is the last shot I got.
Everything on lowest setting possible, except one -- Level of Detail on Ultra.

Thanks Ubisoft.

AC4 has looked and run great on my PC. If you enable vsync and triple buffering it's huge for that game.

I'm not tired of GTA games so I'm not worried about that problem, either. An AC/GTA hybrid sounds fantastic to me. YMMV.

Same here on both counts. I can't get enough of sandbox games for any genre.

A lot of the footage I've seen out there has been crappy and very highly compressed.

I've seen enough of the streams to know that I won't be playing it like GTA. This game has a stealth system that not only works, but works extremely well (if the all the streams are any indication, and I have to believe they are).

You can't do stealth in a GTA game to save your life.

^ All of that is like way opposite of GTA. I just don't see a bad game watching that. If you're up for an open world sandbox game.

Shot a guy with my silenced pistol, behind a wall, in an alley, completely away from the street. About 50 yards away, some woman who was totally out of line-of-sight whips out her cell phone and calls 911 within about 3 seconds.

I snipe her down. Another cell phone a block away! Rinse and repeat.

"Stealth" lol.

The stealth system is awesome.. It reminds me of Splinter Cell Blacklist a lot.

The game is pure fun and has a ton of potential if Ubisoft can just kill this stuttering and hitching problem everyone is experiencing regardless of the power of their rig.

There is stealth.. Raid a drug hangout where you have to knock out two guys and profile them.. You CAN'T run and gun your way through those missions. It's all about stealth and not being seen.

That looks like a normal map to me. How can you tell it's tessellated/displaced?

Seems to me with the former pic that the stones are subtly raised and individuated, whereas in the latter pic they look like very flat textures with no distinguishing height or grooves between the paving.

AC4 ran better than Watch Dogs for me.
At least I could run that game at 60fps without it looking like total shit.

i haven't played watch dogs much past the first time you get to control your character because of the stuttering, but when i set textures to the lowest setting (medium?) with everything else on max i was getting 60-70 fps in the starting area. that's with a 2 gb 770. ac4 is more like sub 50 fps at all times with dips into the 30s unless you lower the settings so much that it's too ugly to be enjoyable. oh, and the 60 fps cap. but that doesn't really matter because no gpu configuration in existence can get any more than that anyway. :D

Ok. That isn't fine. You're right. If we're going to break it down like that.

break it down like what? it's not some kind of once-in-a-blue-moon worst case scenario situation. that's how the game runs.

There is definitely a specific graphic setting causing the stutter. My game ran fine when I first started playing with auto detected settings but once I started tweaking them I got terrible stutter. Unfortunately I didn't do it methodically so I don't know which one caused it. My default settings auto detect to custom which is the same as high. I'm now testing the different setting to see what makes it happen.

The stutter is caused by textures. 3 GB, use High. 2 GB, use Medium.
You need one of the 6 GB beasts to use Ultra.

Independent of resolution.
Although I did see one guy with a 780 6 GB complaining about it.

Under display my texture quality is greyed out but says ultra but in the ini any texture related option is set to high or pc. I don't think I can really test this with the game version I'm using. I'm have it running on a GTX670 with 4gb.

And I saw a guy with SLI Titans and SSDs (in this thread?) complaining about it.

While this game is VRAM heavy there is something else at play here causing everyone stuttering misery.

Well changing the texture from ultra to high or vice versa doesn't make a difference with my stuttering. Must be something different. I'll just wait till tuesday to figure it out.

You need a day one patch and some new drivers to fix the stuttering. Stop pirating.

lol

I'm updating this to say I like ubisoft games and think this game is worth buying. There are issues but there always is in this day and age.
