Who's left crunching f@h?

I know there has been a lot of fallout the past few months, but I've stuck with the f@h project and continued crunching data (even BA). I was just curious how many folks are left that are active here in the DC sub forum, or has everyone moved on?

Also, is there any real news coming down the pipe concerning f@h from Stanford? Being a long time folder and finishing the G@H project years ago, I guess I feel like seeing it through with the existing project. ;)

Ax, I left two low-end clients folding since I didn't want to bother converting them to BOINC. They only get 40-45K PPD each (dual Xeon X5570 CPUs). All of my other clients (39 hosts) moved to BOINC and I actually purchased some older GTX 580 GPUs to help our team's DC-Vault standings on the GIMPS project. These GPUs are almost as fast as a GTX 780 Ti when it comes to GIMPS.

I'm not sure if you saw that proteneer (F@H Developer) has posted in our forums two weeks ago. He provided details on the upcoming new core.

I have some random clients still running somewhere, I removed them from all my servers/pcs long ago though

it got too expensive and I found other hobbies more satisfying and less frustrating/dramatic

I wondered about the recent increase in availability on the 4P Systems and especially the 617X CPU's

never catch me running F@H *shifty eyes*

3 weeks away from passing PS3, never gonna beat anonymous though (2.4 years to overtake), but at least I'll hit 3billion in 41 days

Congrats on the 3B, but we need to get you migrated to BOINC. :D

What was ever the point of folding? Did it ever cure anything? Is BOINC similar as in trying to cure some disease?

Yes folding has had some good impacts in the study of diseases. The problem is that running F@H isn't like a progress bar. There is no 100% completion and once you reach a point the disease is cured.

The main thing that F@H provides is the papers they can publish based upon the results they get from running a simulation. Those results aren't going to be cut and dry either but someone in the field of study can read the papers published by Stanford and use the data from them to help model their own work. So you will never see a direct correlation from the work being done by the clients to finding a cure or making a drug to treat a disease, but somewhere in the grand scheme of things the work being done by folding is providing a benefit to the researchers in the field.

I would guess that a lot of the BOINC projects have similar goals. A researcher can use the data crunched to make a simulation and publish their findings. Then another researcher can use that information to help them with understanding a concept and create a better model. Then using all of that information someone else would be able to find a solution to the problem. Each part builds upon the other but it's difficult to die them together for a direct correlation. Remember that in the field of science that even a wrong outcome is still an outcome. If you simulate something and it comes out the opposite of what you would expect, that info is still useful so that someone doesn't attempt to do the same thing over again.

bman212121 is pretty accurate for most DC projects. I will contest that WCG has actually posted a few exciting results like the 7 drug candidates that Help Fight Childhood Cancer actually found that show great promise as new treatments for neuroblastoma. https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewNewsArticle.do?articleId=342

Other newsworthy items from WCG can be found here:

Edit:

Actually, BOINC is just a manager app. It does not science. You attach to one or more DC projects with it and it downloads THEIR apps and lets them run. So, BOINC itself is incapable of curing anything. However, the projects you choose very well could...

I'm still running it - and will be firing everything back up after my holiday

Thanks for the responses on this and the good information concerning other projects. It's nice to see some folks sticking it out (for now), and like MtnDuey mentioned I guess I'll eventually end up re-evaluating where I'm going with it all after they finally kill off the BA units. I'm hopeful that they will come up with something before then that will allow me to continue using my 4P/6180's, but like so many times before they will probably focus on implementing different hardware.

I've shut down my clients for the time being. I'll re-evaluate here in a month or so.

LOL the already have a plan it is called (Fold SMP)

I'm still plugging away at F@H. I'm not a big time contributor, I only fold on a single mid-range PC, but I've recently got into the top 5000 overall and I'm close to cracking the top 300 in the team.

Yeah, I'm still folding. I'm also running the new ocore on one box.

What equipment are you running the ocore on, rhavern? Anything interesting with it?

Still 100% with FAH. I will re-evaluate when the Big Advanced projects end for independent users next year.

I have pretty much hung up mu folding hat...

There's a system or two out there that I borged that I havent' cleaned up yet it looks like. I think I know which ones they are.

I will not be folding until they clean up the Folding Forum every time I think they are behaving like decent human beings towards donors over there they prove me wrong. I am guessing this is never going to happen so I would venture to say I will most likely never run another production WU. Although I still run the Alpha stuff when they need help.

I still very much believe in the program itself and believe it to have the greatest chance of helping humanity, I just can not bring myself to support an organization that treats it's donors with such malice and disrespect.

I am still donating In fact my output has increased since I quit F@H and likely will continue to increase as more energy efficient hardware develops. I would very much like to fold again on a production level but I do not see that happening in the near future. They made their choice so I made mine based on their actions. :(

Whats happened that has run everybody off? I thought the F@H group were pretty hardcore.

The cock up over the BA program and the complete disregard for donors over at FF are the prime reasons. VJ not understanding donors properly doesn't help either.

As [H]ardcore as we are, people will only put up with so much bullshit before they move on.

[H] was or is a bigadv focused team, all buying advice has been towards bigadv equipment, the FS/FT seciont has more/less only been server grade equipment, most guides for bigadv equipment etc.

PG announced an increase in bigadv requirements, mentioning only an increase in required CPU cores and two dates, at each date the required number of cores would go up by 8.
Folders required more info, treatened to make "fixes" if machines that would be able to meet deadlines would just get blocked of by the number of cores rule.
Mods at FoldingForums started getting a little aggresive and censored a lot of posts, even the well behaved ones requesting information or suggesting ways to move bigadv forward.
Unfortunately the heavy modding only aggravated the sh*tstorm on FF.
Pande broke the silence and announced only one of the increases in core count requirements would be implemented and bigadv would be killed of at the end of 2014.
Killing bigadv more or less killed team [H].

A BIG but to this, last night on IRC, proteineer alluded to some upcoming work on a new core based on openmm 6.2 which may take away some of the pain. Also posted was the fact that the Nacl client is capable of monstrous PPD on BA hardware.

Once I get my 3rd rig up and running i'll run some tests - current attempts to get Ncal to fold are proving fruitless.

Back to the original question- I still lurk, but Mom dies (Chicago, not upstairs), and I am the only on e in the family that gave s damn, so there are bills. And Cali decided that I owe 10K in taxes, despite following all of their ruled (hit me on a federal tax forgiveness). So, I am out for a bit, but I hope to not sell my 2p and octo core... I will know in a month or two.

Sorry about your loss DWolvin...as well as the other issues you're now faced with from the government. Real life seems to get hold of all of us eventually, but you'll bounce back. Hang in there and thanks for your contributions!

Still running. Currently broke into the top 300 and still climbing.

Axdrenaline, my sympathies with your present challenges. Be strong, come back when you can. :)

You should ask them what they consider Monstrous ppd...
When that was brought up in the channel the example I heard was a 2p making 270k ppd instead of 330k on BA.

Its still better than 130k PPD off smp, and to most people, including me, 270k PPD from a rig is still pretty damn good

any more info on this nacl client? I have some 2P rigs that are borderline BA capable, thinking this would be a good option to use them

Ordered a new psu yesterday so that should be here early next week. IF I'm feeling brave enough to fiddle with my Z9PE rig I might have a test session over the weekend
