Why Men Choose Female Avatars in World of Warcraft

I play females in most games, but I don't play WOW. If I was playing a MMO and actually talking to people I would probably not play as a chick.

That's like when you watch porn and the man moans louder than the woman, that's just not right

Lol, what porn are you watching? Usually the directors silence the men and don't even show there face. We all know what porn is for.....the drama of course.

Female character 99% of the time. Chicks are better to stare at while playing. They take up less room on the screen so I don't end up dying to some AOE fire under my feet. Artists give them the best animations usually. Chivalrous guys in the game always try to save you from dying. Less repair bills and less time running back to my body. Guilds will recruit you just to see if you're a female on vent even if you tell them that you're a guy in advance. Since I don't use all the newest slang because I'm old as hell, they seem to reject me telling them that, "I'm a guy!"

Eff it. I've gotten free mounts, gold, high level dungeon run, crafting supplies from these guys looking for an internet date or whatever. If you want to stuff my inbox with stuff that takes hours to grind, I'll /dance with you all day. I guess it's because I typically spend an hour or more on the character creation screen before I play. ;)

Weirdest bastard was a 55 year old married man in Aion that fell in love with the way my character looked. That dude would send me legendary weapons in the mail so I would run dungeons with my Sorcerer. I got on vent with this dude and he still didn't give a damn. Funniest shit ever!

I play a character that respresents my extension in to the game world, my avatar, if you will.

As I am male, I play male characters but I can see how not everyone shares that perspective and that's fine.

i have 4 female characters (Druid, Priest, Mage, and Warlock). I have 6 male characters. I mainly pick female for my casters and male for melee.

I sure as hell don't act like a woman when i'm playing them in WoW.

seems the cheap kind without editing :p

on topic tho i pick 1 or the other depending on character design, on b/moob to ass ratio :D

For me, my avatar is first based on utility, and then appearance (and I admit I use stereotyping).

For some earlier FPS's, I first used a female character for smaller hit boxes, and also because it gives you a slight edge. People tend to play worse, especially when they see a female character beat them. They may even know it's a guy behind the character, but there's still some psychology that makes them worse just seeing a female character win. For MMO's, female characters (provided they're aesthetically pleasing) will be given free stuff making their games easier than male characters.

Second, yes, female characters typically are more aesthetically pleasing. Maybe the quote in the article in which men usually design female characters, but women don't design male characters is true. Yes, I'd rather look at an attractive half nude woman for hours on end playing the game than looking at an ugly overly musclebound dude.

But if the guy isn't a complete exaggeration I'll typically play male characters for fighters and female characters for casters. Except in games like Diablo where a hardcore mode exists. There, softcore games get female characters due to the nature of the game. Am I sexist? You bet! But that honestly is more aimed as a statement towards guys who play sc rather than women.

Total bullshit article. Main reason is to be a whore that is get more items, money, help, etc. I tried the game in 2006? It was one of the most boring pieces of crap I ever played. These types probably also closet cross-dressers.

For you WoW players, what is your male to female character ratio?

for me ( a male): 8 male, 5 female

Personally, 4 male. I have 1 female panda monk that my daughter (6) created and plays occasionally (level 7? and still really haven't left the initial Pandaren city), she's content just running around, looking at things and running away when Reds show up.

I do have 1 male and 1 female Guild Wars 2 toon though.. not sure what this says about me but I thought the swishy Sylvari mesmer flower outfit was cute

I haven't played WoW in a long time.

When I did, I picked character gender randomly (so I've been a male elf mage and a female orc warrior, among others.) I did notice that both I acted differently for the different-gender characters, and that I was treated differently. Having a gender-nonspecific name also seemed to affect it - when playing a male character, everyone assumed I was male; when playing a female character, everyone assumed I was female. I never used voice chat.

I quit WoW simply because I found it boring. I tried many different characters, and never really "got into" one. I have been doing pencil-and-paper / tabletop role playing games for a couple decades now, and generally pick character gender for that that best fits my character concept (or randomly.) My current Pathfinder (Dungeons and Dragons successor game) character is a female rogue.

I'd almost say a better news story is "People still play WoW?"

Sad how any news post involving WoW devolves into a bashing contest.

Anyway, I tend to match my character's sex to the role they're playing. For example. a heavy melee class would tend to be male (Warrior, Death Knight), whereas a magic user or light melee class would be female (priest, mage, rogue). Hunters and shaman can go either way. Plate tends to look better on large bulky characters, whereas robes fit a slender character better.

More of an old school D&D role alignment, but I've stuck with it.

Umm, I can count on the number of hours I played WoW on no fingers. For me, I personally find better things to spend my money on.

Yeah cause someone else playing a game you don't like is so... actually I'm not sure. What makes it so bad exactly? Why the eye roll? ??? ???

I guess I should of stated I am biased. I played wow for almost 5 years and I met my wife in game. Which brings me to another point... great place to hook up. Gamer wife is epic.

Pandaren, dat ass. ;)

When I played, my character was an undead warlock, and I attempted to make it look as ugly as fuck. Was going for the black metal look.

i thought only women and boys under 19 played that so called game

This is why i like first person shooters. Getting fixated on your own ass, guy or girl, it just messed up.

I generally default to male. I've made a couple female WoW characters when I last played years ago. The only time it really mattered was the 0.2 seconds I spent admiring them at the login screen. The rest of the time, I was focused on the game and didn't really care what the hell the sex of my character was.

Usually in my case, it depends on what game i'm playing. I usually do a mix of 50/50 most of the time unless the models they use are horrible, for which i then pick whatever looks best whatever the sex.
As someone mentioned before, tailoring the sex of my character to whatever class or profession i'm doing in the game is something i've done before.
(Think it's funny to have a tiny petite female fighter kick the living beejeezus out of some huge male characters sometimes)
I will have to admit that i HAVE made female characters at times just because they looked hot though..:p
Much rather look at a female form in games sometimes than with some of the Girly-looking males some of these games have.
Thinking about it...A real fun female character to play was the lead character in the "No one lives forever" franchise...Of course, they don't REALLY make games like that much anymore anyhow.lol

In the last MMO I played (DC Universe) I played as a female, because it was kind of an homage to my friend's wife, I used her name and made her a supervillain. It was fun to email him telling him about all the evil stuff "his wife" did in-game.

In my current MMO I play as a female as well, but named after my own toddler daughter. It's role playing, I don't try to take it too seriously. Everyone in game knows I'm a guy, I don't try to hide it.

Although the gender-switching men could partially talk the talk, they completely failed to walk the walk. The researchers found that all the men in their study moved around in a very different way than the women. The men moved backward more often, stayed farther away from groups, and jumped about twice as much as the women did.
I dont know why, but I laughed at that. I can definitly see it being true, but I dont understand WHY. I freaking love moving in strange directions and jumping non stop in video games. Part of my favorite thing about speed runs is how they players are just continously jumping. It's like they just float through the level.

This may have nothing to do with WoW but it does have to do with female characters.

Years ago when Lego Star Wars came out on the original XBox my then very young son wouldn't play female characters. He made me play them. Through the years I'd just automatically pick the female character when we played. A couple years ago he matured enough to not care about the character's gender. However, I still kept playing the females when we played games. One day he ask why I kept choosing the females. It wasn't until he asked that I realized how much satisfaction I got from it. After reflecting on that, I finally said, "It is the only time I can control a woman's actions."

Totally agree. I met my gf in Aion about 4 years or so ago and now we've been living together for a year. Never thought I'd find a girl that way but it happened and it's been great.

I would never play as a female on a MMORPG since I'm a male, and playing as a female character would feel like lying to other players.

However, for non-online, actiony game like Torchlight, I sometimes play female characters for the aesthetic reasons in the article.

But for a deep, involved RPG like Mass Effect or Skyrim, my characters are pretty much an idealized version of myself. Yep, no fem-shep for me.

I suppose it's only lying IMHO if you represent yourself as female in a way that someone might rely on. My guildies hear me in vent and are not likely to be confused. In a game like WoW or Borderlands 2 or Unreal Tournament where you don't actually assume the role of your character in any story-driven manner it's simply eye candy.

Having said that back in my SWG days a "girl" in our guild made "friends" with a guy who was completely unaware that it was not in fact a female in real life and gave items and such to the "girl." He was not pleased. This was back when vent wasn't as common.

For me..
I play male characters for more "masculine" roles such as Warrior and female characters for more "feminine" roles such as mage/priest. Also I often take into consideration the model size for each sex. If I will be doing PVP I tend to pick something with a smaller model so that it is harder to target.
When I play a female character I often design her based on my wife, which is fun me and her to create.
Just my $.02
