The Wii U is done

Yar, that could be it. I was thinking a redesigned Wii U without a gamepad (new name too) and the release of a new 3DS XL that can also function as a Wii U gamepad.

Ha, the last thing Nintendo needs is another product name to confuse the hell out of people.

Though I will say "Wii 2", "Super Wii", or "Wii HD" with a different looking console might have made the Wii U launch much more successful.

While I'm sure anything is possible, I imagine this will be something along the line of what they do with their handhelds. A refresh or mild update but nothing that alienates current owners.
While the Wii U isn't as strong as the PS4 and Xbox One it's not like the hardware is THAT weak. A perceived lack of must-have titles and general confusion about the product are the primary issues.

I still think the name 'Wii U' is confusing to most consumers. A new name (alongside a new console redesign, albeit with similar hardware to ensure compatibility) would be a way to attract consumers to their product.

Yeah I don't think the problem is the hardware, Super Mario 3D World and some of the other games look better than PS4 and One titles. Nintendo has an art style that allows them to make some really incredible looking stuff even if it isn't pushing the biggest textures or running the best AA levels.

Most people know what a Wii is; how is it confusing? I don't get this notion. They can't call it a Wii, and I guess they didn't want to start adding #s to the end...so they settled on Wii U. I don't like the name, but I don't have any better suggestions. Again though - the Wii is a brand; they continued with the brand name. Same way Microsoft has Xboxes and Sony has Playstations. For all intents and purposes Nintendo could start calling everything from here on out "Wii something or other".

I don't see them releasing a new console, not yet. If they release a new console they're going to deflate what little momentum any of their 'newer' consoles have at this point (Wii U, 2DS/3DS). The fact that people still don't grasp is that they're making money - doesn't matter what their sales or marketshare is when they make money. Why would they spend money on R&D of a new console when what they have isn't even 2 years old and it's making them money?

What they need is more system sellers, and if they plan on making a dent and gaining some marketshare, they better do it with exclusives and 3rd party stuff. Prove to everyone that other companies like the Wii U experience as much as you [Nintendo] do.

If there's any new hardware, I would imagine it'll be a newer version of the tablet with a thinner design, better battery life, and probably a cheaper MSRP (both to consumers and to Nintendo in cost).

Many people thought the "Wii U" was an accessory for the Wii, not an all new console. Nintendo has even admitted this. If you go back through the thread, there are a lot of examples of member's family and friends not understanding what the Wii U was. Heck I think there are a few [H] members that didn't know it was a new console too.

I wish they'd release a console without all the controller gimmicks :( Or release on other platforms.

I like Nintendo games, but they have been ruined by motion controls and the whatnot - sigh. I don't want super powerful graphics either - Nintendo games don't need em. That's what my PC is for. Oh ya, and an updated 2D Metroid with all the badassery of the old school titles.

I guess I can dream...

There are a LOT of people that thought the WiiU was just the gamepad/tablet add-on. I've heard it multiple times from non-gamers and even at my local Target.
The conversation usually involves "we already have an iPad and you don't even play your Wii anymore..."

In your situation I would still wait. Remember Sony denied a PS4 Last of Us when it leaked only to announce it a few days later? Nintendo PR is not going to confirm a rumor until the company is ready.

Plus is a Wii U without a GamePad really "new"? They could be just playing dumb.

I don't envy Nintendo's spot right now. The Wii U is too weak to be attractive to most 3rd party developers, especially as ps3/360 development wraps up. However, announcing new hardware just a year and a half after releasing the Wii U would piss off a ton of people who jumped into the Wii U.

Rock meet hard place.

My brother plays his Wii U more than his PS4. He's also getting Mario Kart and Smash Bros. I'm going to have to buy a controller. I would've personally went with Xbox One over PS4 but whatever.

I dont see why this is so hard to understand. My PS4 hasnt even been booted on since its launch week. The Wii U on the other had you know...actually has content?

Because it's a statement of opinion not fact?

Doesnt surprise me that he plays the WiiU more than ps4. Whats there to play thats not a remake/indie game/tech demo/doesn't suck? I'm not seeing much to be honest. I'd love to pick up a ps4, there just isnt shit to play right now. Which is why i don't understand why people bought them at launch.

Whats there to play on Wii U that's not a child's game/inferior port? The type of games out is generally subjective to the person playing them. There is plenty of things to play on all consoles, just depends on what you like.

Playtime in my house is PC > PS4 > PS3> XBox One > Wii U > Xbox 360.

Child's games? I didn't think we were going down that path.

Playtime in my house is Heterosexual ORGY > all. I seriously haven't played any consoles, cause I already got game.

Wii U was marketed poorly, but when SSB and with the new Mario Kart it should gain some traction... To me the Wii U is a different kind of console... They don't have all the blockbuster games, but the games have high replayability and are always an option when I have a bunch of friends over.

Picked up DK Tropical Freeze yesterday to play with my GF since we finished Mario :)

After that I'll be picking MK8!! :D

Yar, this is the main reason I'm choosing a Wii U over the PS4 or XBone, it's a different console that will give me a different experience than the other two. Most of the games that I'm interested in on the PS4 or XBone are available for PC (usually the PC is the greater version too). So I'm looking at the Wii U as complementary to my PC gaming.

In all likelihood my kid will be getting either a PS4 or XBone, so I could always borrow his console if a sweet exclusive comes out for them.

Plus I've missed out on the last few generations of Nintendo titles, so I have some catching up to do on that Virtual Console.

Nintendo will outlast the Xbox. Bill Gates just said he would support spinning off the Xbox.

Someone said terrible port games for Wii U too, really?

Have you played Injustice for the Wii-U, it was the best play on any console for that game, which was a GREAT game. Hell even some of the functions that are in use for the gamepad in Arkham were incredible. So stop being delusional.

Wii-U has its strengths and its faults. I agree with Grimmy311, its not a system with blockbuster games, but what it has is high replay value and I definitely get my moneys worth out of it.

I would have said that if it played faster or looked better but it doesn't, in fact the ps4 version hiccups occasionally and I've never seen that with the Wii u version
Yep bought it twice once at launch and it was 20 something on ps+ a while back.

To clarify too those hiccups aren't in combat but during cut scenes mostly on ps4.

Hmm I don't own the game because I am horrible at fighters but I thought the Wii U version was 720p/60 and the PS4 version was 1080p/60 with AA, better textures and effects.

Haven't read much on it tbh but that is what I gathered from what I have read online.

Granted its an unfair comparison as the Wii U version was superior to the PS3 and 360 versions.

He said he would support the new CEOs decision. Not that he supports spinning the Xbox brand off.

Would be a terrible idea in the long run. Sony would have a huge advantage because of its strong media divisions and the spin off Xbox division wouldn't be able to leverage nearly as well without a strong Microsoft support system. Pretty sure that spinning off the Xbox division would mean the ultimate death of the Xbox , it took quite a long time for the 360 to turn a profit and even longer for Xbox Live to do so. The Xbox One is in a weak position thanks to its lackluster hardware and inflated cost.

But the Wii-U despite some very strong quality titles was depending on a market that is dying a hard and fast death in Japan (home non-portable consoles). Japan isn't interested in sitting at home and playing games any more , Japan is all about being on the go and multitasking everything in existence. The mobile market is where Nintendo should focus now.

But instead we'll probably get another home console with a loose direction and stubborn Nintendo approach (very enclosed ecosystem , under powered specs , weird Nintendo policies that contradict accepted norms and a CEO that doesn't understand that his country isn't interested in home only gaming consoles).

I would debate that point a bit. While the trend may be to mobile, there is still interest in home gaming. It's just that Nintendo doesn't make what most people want. PS4 has sold 310,000 more units in Japan than the Wii U despite being released over a year later than Wii U. Hell the PS3 out sold the Wii U in Japan last week.

I was thinking of picking up a wii u just for the bolwing with a friend online.

Wii-U
Bowling life-time pass is $9.99 if I remember correctly

Get Super Mario 3d World and pick up Mario Kart 8 as well. In a few months will be Super Smash Brothers Wii-U and than X.

Not very far off from their January prediction update. Maybe their forecasts for this year will be a little more accurate.

That's the year where Iwata promised 1 bilion profit and 9 milions of Wii U sold

That was promised in early 2013, Iwata had to revise it in Jan 14 to downplay the eventual shock. Nintendo (and Iwata in general) have been terrible at more long term predictions since the Wii U and 3DS came out.

I think they knew full well how poor the Wii U was doing and straight up lied to investors for almost 3/4ths of a year. That's around the time they knew it was not happening.

Mario Kart will sell a lot of consoles. The real question though is how much? It's insane 35 million copies were sold on the Wii.
