Ok,i decide make the hole today,because i have 2 cats and im scared if they move the fans, so here the pics of my rig (same size of the Xbox One) finished

HP Slimline S5000 case (i need separate the power led and hd led, i use a precision knife)

Shuttle PC63J 500 watts 80 Plus
No DVD drive
500Gb HDDD

This is brilliant, powerhouse! I'm guessing the PSU don't get much cooling though?

The PSU have a little 50mm fan and gets airflow from the top of the case,in this zone

Where did you get the AFOX 7850 low profile card and how did you fit in the $700 budget?

I have done some cursory searches in this threads to see how many have swapped a totally different motherboard into a Slimline case, but have not found what I'm looking for.

The title says it all. ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 in a Slimline case. The main issue is getting a powerful enough supply for an A10 chip (90W?) in the box without running in to any of the components on the mobo.


  1. Any links to anyone's build who has swapped a non-HP motherboard into a Slimline case ?
  2. Is there somewhere in the thread/forum that shows the differences between the various Slimline cases ?

In s5000 cases you can install a Micro ATX motherboard, im using Biostar A55MLV Micro atx in that case,
But if is a hp slimline s3000 /s7600 series, only allows ITX cases
The S5000 uses TFX power supplies
The s3000/s7600 uses flex power supplies

The only issue to use thios cases,is the front panel connector (power/led/hdd led)

It took me about 15 minutes to seperate pins from the connector. I actually used a needle to do it, but yes you must be careful. All you need to do is de-latch the plastic holding the wires in place. One other note, lining up the pins with the new motherboard was a trial and error thing for those that just had an empty case lying around. You could damage your motherboard if you connect the wrong pins.

I bought a HP slimline s5000 case in 2012 off ebay, and just built a new computer out of it this month. I used a ASUS Z87 board, and Seasonic TFX power supply. Its an energy-efficient high end desktop PC. More details of my build will follow as I am happy with the end result.

i add the link for the PSU, i cant found a better deal, fit in S5000 case perfectly, in S3000 theorically fit

If you are looking for a power supply for S5000 cases you should choose one of the flowing. They are cheaper, better, and run cooler than the one you linked too.

Sure,i think im not the only one who's planning put a 7850 LP (someone ask me for the card), im posting if someone are looking this PSU at the best price

This PSU runs quiet and cooler, i tried a 1U PSU before and there no comparation,Shuttle make a good work, the fan isnt loud (i tested before i put the card)

The latter card has the performance of the Radeon HD 7850 in the thermal profile of the 7750. Idle power use for 4-5 W, max TDP 60W. They run purely on PCI-E slot power, but some of them come with 6-pin connectors for optional overclocking. Already two low profile cards have been announced by Galaxy. So if you want a high end gaming slimline, it will now be possible at low power consumption and an affordable price.

Thats cool ,personally i dont like that cooler (i bought Zotac GTX 650 LP,exactly the same model like this 2) and always reach 85°C in my old S3000,i hope a better temperatures with the new architecture ,if the TDP is 60 watts, can run in 350 watts PSU
So,im waiting for Afox response, if they planning retain the title of the most powerfull LP Card, a hypothetical R9 270X underclocked to keep the 1 pin connection would be announced.
Personally i keep my 7850 LP for Mantle, with the final drivers BF4 can be played in Ultra around 40 FPS and the future games with this API recieve a boost,but im happy for Nvidia to introduce a new chip to make a powerfull LP card, GTX 650 LP sucks so bad.

Wait, those dont seem to me like "low profile". 140mm wide is like 5.5" i thought low profile to meant like 3-4 inches wide.

No they are low profile. The picture does not show the low profile bracket, in which case you will lose the VGA port. I'm still hoping for more low profile cards, as I want a single slot card that has HDMI, Displayport, and DVI like Sapphire 7750.

That board will be too big for the s3000 variant cases.

You may have more luck(room) in a s5000 variant case.

I dont recomend passive cooling cards,more if you use it in that case, because the airflow doesnt exists and the heat stays inside

A lot better,the GTX 750ti is a bit worse than 7850LP ,but run cool and quiet, i saw some reviews from Google, and the temps stays in 60°C, thats very nice
For example im having some trouble to keep safe temps with my 7850, this days the weather was very hot, 30°C+ to be clear , and i get 2 or 3 crashes for overheating (my card crashes if the temperatures reach more than 83°C).
A need to improve to put another fan, right now im getting 76°C palying Titanfall on High Settings.
 
I've read through some of the pages, and have found a great deal of information. I have a S3713W that I'm wanting to re-purpose as a HTPC, with some gaming capabilities. I have consoles for heavy gaming, for the time being. Going to build a gaming rig later. I have a few questions and need some opinions on my build.

CPU: Has the AMD Atholon X2 4450e; should I search for a faster CPU? The AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ looks to be the most powerful one by spec.

Memory: I'm upgrading to (2x2)4gb of DDR2 800mhz of ram.

Video: Can the onboard graphics handle the HTPC use? If not this may lead me to switching all these components to another case. :( Unless there is a cost effective solution for this application, and may as well add HDMI. The only gaming this PC will see is most likely the Sims 3. It's primary use will be to play BlueRay and stream video.

Sound: From my search the onboard sound should be sufficient.

Hard Drive: I'm going with a 1-2tb hdd for storage and a ssd for boot-up. What size ssd should I get for these particular needs? I have seen people go with anything from 32gb to 128gb.

Disc Drive: Pioneer or LG Blue Ray drive

Case: Staying the same or switching to a Betfenix Prodigy

PSU: If using the Slimline case I have found these on Ebay. Are they a good choice?

Try with the 7750 Low Porfile,works with a 250-300 watts PSU, and run the last games with decent quality and isnt expensive

Can you reach BIOS (first)?
I would try to isolate the fault as usual to a particular compnent by adding removing with ones you know are working. Also memtest to check RAM if you haven't already?

I appreciate the information. The SSD was only recommended on all the htpc builds that I have been researching; I personally haven't had an issue with the boot up time.

Have you looked in the Slimline case? If you are planning to stay in it please note you will struggle to fit the additional* SSD in (or at least it needs some thought). :)

Consider a Hybrid drive?

*additional to 3.5" HDD and ODD
 
The 3 and 5 series slimline case has a useless drive bay for HP Pocket Media Drive. Removing it will give room for SSD. You should make sure you have spare SATA port and power though.

I second that SSD isn't very useful for an HTPC. I had one. But for gaming, I think it would be useful.

That's the location that I had planned on using, but if it isn't needed for this application, then I'll save the money for other projects.

I appreciate everyone's help. The only thing I have left to decide, is whether or not to keep the factory case.
